Families: Take our brief school year calendar survey by Dec. 1
The Folsom Cordova Board of Education is requesting public feedback as it considers next year's academic calendar.

This survey is not a formal vote for the 2018-19 school year calendar. Rather, the Board will use the input provided here to help guide its decision. Board members have asked for feedback from teachers, staff, and students as well.

  • Calendar A: the same calendar the district is using for the 2017-2018 school year, with a two-week Winter Break, a school start date of August 13, 2018, and the last day of school on May 30, 2019.
  • Calendar B: includes a three-week Winter Break, a school start date of August 8, 2018, and the last day of school on May 31, 2019.

NOTE: The purpose of the proposed three-week Winter Break in Option B would be to provide a new academic inter-session for high school students, in which students could receive academic intervention to help recover class credits much earlier in the school year.

The Board will make a final decision at an upcoming meeting.
VIDEO: Mather Heights students write gratitude notes
Students in Mrs. Stasaitis' second and third grade combination class at Mather Heights Elementary had a class lesson in gratitude.

Students used their critical thinking skills to reflect on their lives and what they are thankful for. Students wrote two gratitude notes daily to their family about what they are thankful for and put them in a decorated envelope.

Students then delivered their thoughtful notes to their families over Thanksgiving break.

VIDEO: Spirit of Vista Giving Drive generates lots of donations
Article and video by: FCUSD Communication Interns John Farris and Jordan Young

The "Spirit of Vista Giving Drive" is an annual donation drive at Vista del Lago High School put on by the school's student government class. Every day of the week-long event, donations of clothes and perishable food items are collected which are later collected by the Sacramento Food Bank and Powerhouse Ministries.

This "Giving Drive" at Vista is not the average donation event. Instead, the week is an exciting time on campus for students, consisting of music, decorations, and more, all promoting the event and soliciting more donations.

On top of the excitement for students, the Giving Drive also serves as an opportunity for clubs on campus to be involved. Once the donations are collected, multiple clubs on campus contribute to the cause by sorting through all the donations after school to help ease the process. Other students are encouraged and welcome to help as well.

This year Vista del Lago was happy to announce they broke a new record of donations this year having collected over 500 donations. The school knows all the goods collected will be of great benefit to the community.

Mills students start coat drive: " Project Keep Them Warm"
Mills Middle School 8th graders MacKenzie Johnson and Madeline Leavitt started a coat drive at their school, "Project Keep Them Warm," for their fellow students in need of a coat.

Johnson came up with the idea after learning a classmate didn't have a coat to wear and reached out to Levitt about coordinating a drive together. The two approached their science teacher Justin Smith about their idea, and they all presented the idea to Principal Peter Maroon, who gave it the green light. Additional students Kijani Clark, Kya Clark and Emily Johnson have joined in to help.

Students who need a coat can speak with a school counselor about getting one. If you'd like to donate a new or gently used coat you can drop it off at the main office. The school is located at 10439 Coloma Rd. in Rancho Cordova. Coats will be accepted until 12/15!
