Second Sunday
of Advent
9:30 am
John called people to repent, to clear the decks, to completely reorder their lives so that nothing would get in the way of the Lord's coming. The reading from Isaiah gives the context for this radical call: the assurance of forgiveness that encourages us to repent; the promise that the coming one will be gentle with the little ones. Isaiah calls us all to be heralds with John, to lift up our voices fearlessly and say, "See, your God is coming!" We say it to one another in worship, in order to say it with our lives in a world in need of justice and peace.

Nativity observes the season by lighting the Advent wreath...  we invite your family to keep the season with the materials offered on the table in the Narthex.  Included are a calendar and prayers for each of the days of Advent and children's resources (a magnetic wreath or calendar).
Stewardship Season

The end of November signaled the conclusion of our presentation of Stewardship... the understanding that all we have comes from God and giving that reflects our response to our bounteous God.  So we commit ourselves to a plan of making our wealth, time and talent available to Christ's church and the work we do for the sake of the Gospel.

Again this year, we are grateful for Joe Mattis who has led us into our theme of  " We Give Our Best... God Does the Rest."

This represents both the challenge we embrace in offering our best to God and the graceful good news that God will take whatever we offer and perfect it.

In this year ahead we will be invited to look back on God's faithfulness with Nativity for over 50 years, look around in love at the opportunities for ministry in our community in the present, and  look forward and upward in hope to what lies ahead.  Your 2018 Giving Intention cards (known heretofore as "pledges") will be available in the Narthex on the Sundays of December... awaiting the results of your prayerful and hopefully generous commitment.  We then expect to gather our individual promises by New Year's Eve Sunday.

May God bless us with glad and generous hearts!

PS  While we look forward to your 2018 intention, we ask that you pay attention to the fulfillment of your 2017 commitment to Nativity.  If we all come up to date, we shall easily eliminate any potential shortfall this year.  May God make it so!
Poinsettias for Christmas!

Help beautify our Sanctuary for Christmas this year.  Sign up to purchase a poinsettia in memory or in honor of a loved one or milestone in your life.  A sign-up sheet will be available in the Narthex this Sunday, and recognition will appear in the Christmas Eve bulletin.  Poinsettias cost $15/each.  Thanks to the Barbera Family for their generous assistance in this decorative endeavor!
Gifts Of Hope: Bringing Hope to Others for 25 Years!

In 2017 Gifts of Hope celebrates its 25th anniversary.  We celebrate and we give thanks for
  • our total disbursements of more than $3.37 million, funds which have been disbursed to our organizations to further their work in our community.
  • adding Lutheran Campus Ministry, making a total of 18 beneficiary organizations:   10 social service agencies, 3 student ministries, 2 church camps and our Synod's 3 global companion synods.
  • a special Christmas card which has a 'pop out' ornament for the Christmas tree.
  • our relationship with our donors, our volunteers, our participating congregations, and our beneficiary organizations.
You can help us do more in 2017. Please consider increasing your support by 25% or by $25.

Give a unique gift to your loved one this Christmas and help those in need by selecting gifts from the 2017 Catalog of Gifts, with prices ranging from $10 to $250.

You will receive a Christmas card to present to your honored loved one. We have a special Christmas card this year, celebrating our 25th anniversary.  It has a 'pop out' Christmas ornament.  View all gifts and the GOH organizations in our catalog and at www.giftsofhopedc.org.  Support Gifts of Hope and make a difference, locally and/or globally.  See Barb Gigure at Fellowship Hour each Sunday this Advent season if you have orders or questions...we are grateful for her direction in this annual project at Nativity!
No Men's Breakfast
in December

Please note that we will not hold a Men's Breakfast in December so that everyone may be hungry when they attend the Annual Christmas Brunch at Sandi Kottman's home (see article below)  The next Men's Breakfast will be held on January 13 at 8:30 am at Mamma's Kitchen.  Contact Joe Mattaino if you have questions!
Nativity's Annual Christmas Brunch
This Saturday

This Saturday, December 9 is the day you've all been waiting for!  Sandi Kottman will host Nativity's Annual Christmas Brunch at her home (9112 Volunteer Drive) starting at 11:30 am.  This year rather than Sandi preparing desserts, she has agreed for friends to bring their favorite cookie, and she will have a "Cookies Galore" table.

And it does not hurt to express our heartfelt appreciation to Sandi even before the event happens... we're sure her reputation for hospitality and excellence, honed through many a party, will not fail for this one!

It's not too late to email your RSVP to Sandi at [email protected] or Amanda Pope at [email protected].
Reception of
New Members

Nativity welcomes Megan Armenti into membership this Sunday along with her son Anthony.  They come to us by transfer from Good Shepherd... and we look forward to getting to know Megan, her husband Peter and Anthony!
Nativity Book Club Meets  on January 14
N ativity's Book club will next meet on January 14 after church to discuss the book "Room" by Emma Donoghue as well as view the movie based on the book.  We will head over to a member's home (TBD) about one hour after church ends for the book discussion and fellowship.  All are welcome even if you don't have time to read the book!
Sunday's Giver!
Many thanks to Susan Bradley for the lovely fellowship she will prepare this Sunday as well as the candles she is dedicating to Joe's baptismal anniversary!

While Advent greens are appropriate for the Sanctuary in Advent, there still remains an opportunity to provide candles for the weeks of this season and Christmas.  Sign up Sunday!
Enrolling Now!
New sign-ups for flowers, candles and fellowship in 2018 are now available  in the Narthex.  Bring a bouquet for flowers, drop $10 in the offering for candles, and bake or buy away for a tasty fellowship. Recognition for each is noted in the Connect.
Nursery
Our fully outfitted nursery is ready for childcare...  even on the mornings when no staff is available.  We will attempt to offer any visitors who need it our undivided attention and assistance.  See Pastor if you have any questions.
Choir
Thanks to Carrie and our singers for  special music.  Voices young and old, new or experienced are always welcome. Simply show up at 8:45 am any Sunday and the rest will take care of itself!

Questions or  interest? See Carrie.         [email protected]
UCM Gifts Due This Sunday!
UCM's Food Pantry wants to provide heart healthy, non-perishable food items to its clients, especially necessary these days are canned tuna and boxed cereals.  Cart for your donation is as always located in the narthex.

It's the most wonderful time of the year -- UCM opens its Holiday Gift Room!  Nativity is being asked to focus on toys, games, etc. for older children... it's seems the young ones have a glut, and those ages 11 and above have slim pickings.  Please purchase unwrapped, new toys and drop off in the Narthex by THIS SUNDAY!  Good gift ideas include cosmetics, clothes, jewelry, books, sports equipment and gift cards. This is in addition to our beloved ChrisMitt Tree on which you may hang gloves and winter hats for little one.

Without your love some children will not have gifts... and we simply will not allow that to happen!  Bless you...

The Last Word...
It's December and we're beginning the homestretch to Christmas and the end of 2017...soon the 500th anniversary year of the Reformation will be a memory.  We will also be finishing our long run of Luther quotes by sharing some of his thoughts on the Nativity of our Lord.  Then we shall see what might be of interest to you and me as grist for this word mill in 2018. But for now I hope there is some illumination to be had for these next 4 weeks...

It would seem that if the 4 gospels are the source of the story of the life of Jesus they all might begin alike, that is, with his birth.  But you should know that only Luke tells it in the way we have become accustomed to celebrating it...a choir of angels singing to shepherds and a baby lying in a manger located in a stable in tiny Bethlehem.  John speaks of the "Word" made flesh and we first meet Jesus in Mark as he arrives as an adult at the Jordan to be baptized.   Matthew's initial words are neither poetry nor story, rather they are the recounting of a pretty dry as dust genealogy intended to prove Jesus' lineage.

Hence, a line from Luther.. ."Our Lord Jesus Christ was born of a line of ancestors whom the Evangelist Matthew arranges with artistry into three groups of fourteen patriarchs, fourteen kings, and fourteen princes.  Among the latter were a number of disreputable characters, as we learn from the book of Kings, and there were no savory women.  God holds before us this mirror of sinners that we may know that he is sent to sinners, and from sinners is willing to be born."

Never in our culture and seldom in Christendom will the telling of the beloved Christmas story be begun with the reality of sin...too much of a downer, I guess.  No warm fuzzies or colorful glitz for the former, and no commencement of joy and immediate peace for most of the latter.  Typical of Luther to expound on the ancestry not for proof of Jesus' authenticity, rather as evidence of our dire need and his will to become truly human for us.  We proclaim Jesus as Savior...we are saved from ourselves by One who becomes us for our sake.  Imbedded in the beginning of the account of incarnation is both our a priori brokenness and the subsequent unfolding purpose of the ending...the wood of the manger becomes the wood of the cross.

Except that is not the end of this divine drama...there is resurrection!  So the smorgasbord  of Christmas is not just about birth...the nativity is sandwiched between the recognition of the bad news of our need for forgiveness and the ultimate good news of God's need to love us and hold us and never desert us!  And thank God that the menu for this feast that begins, for Luther, with sin... ends with never ending grace.

Wait for it...
