NY SOLAR MAP ADDS LONG ISLAND LIDAR
CUNY-Built Map Puts Solar Tools in Hands of Long Island Residents, Solar Developers and Government Officials
Long Islanders now have access to a sophisticated internet-based tool that evaluates the solar energy generating potential of any site or roof on Long Island. Sustainable CUNY of the City University of New York  worked with experts at Hunter College's Center for Advanced Research of Spatial Information (CARSI) to add the 'Light Detection and Ranging' (LIDAR) layer to the existing NY Solar Map and Portal.   Media Release
REDUCE BUSINESS LOSSES w/STORAGE
Sustainable CUNY recently teamed with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and KatRisk LLC to determine how integrated solar+storage systems, when sized for energy resiliency, can reduce the expected business interruption insurance losses in the event of a catastrophe causing widespread power outages.  Collectively, the team will construct a catastrophe model that will address how much business interruption loss could have been avoided if more facilities had installed resilient PV systems prior to Superstorm Sandy, which knocked out portions of New York City's grid in late 2012.  The results from this modeling will be a first step towards developing insurance industry incentives, such as premium reductions, to stimulate increased investment in resilient PV systems.
NYCHA/CUNY LEAD URBAN CSS INITIATIVE
The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) plans to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) next week seeking solar developers interested in installing Community Shared Solar systems on the rooftops and parking lots of NYCHA's public housing. The RFP marks the first phase of an initiative aimed at installing 25 MW of renewable energy capacity on NYCHA properties by 2025. Sustainable CUNY is supporting NYCHA on this initiative, which can serve as a replicable model for other affordable housing providers in New York State. Additional information on the RFP and the overall initiative can be found on the new   NYCHA page on the NY Solar Map and Portal.
MAKING A CASE FOR SOLAR+STORAGE
The Smart DG Hub's Resilient Solar initiative has published the Marcus Garvey Case Study , highlighting the groundbreaking solar+storage project recently installed at the Marcus Garvey housing complex in Brooklyn. The study examines the project from a financing perspective and details the development process, stakeholder involvement, and financing mechanisms utilized.  Case studies can serve as a valuable communications tool to help tell the "story" of solar+storage as the market for this new technology expands.
SOLARIZE NYC
Solarize NYC, a project of the NYC Solar Partnership , has two solarize campaigns underway: Solar Uptown Now and Solarize Brooklyn CB2. Solar Uptown Now in northern Manhattan has successfully completed the RFP process and selected two installers to put solar PV on rooftops in Harlem, Washington Heights, Inwood and East Harlem. Buildings in the Solar Uptown Now campaign include low- and middle-income affordable housing, 1-4 unit residences, and larger market-rate buildings.
LI WORKSHOP FOR CSS AND ZONING
Please join the NY-SUN PV Trainers Network as it presents a free training on Community Solar and Zoning for Solar Energy. The workshop will discuss basic strategies to develop a policy, planning, permitting and regulatory framework for solar. In addition the workshop will give an overview of community distributed generation, also known as shared solar, New York's newest mechanism for expanding solar access to communities. Policymakers who complete this workshop are eligible to receive complimentary one-on-one technical support in designing and implementing smart solar policy in their local jurisdiction. The presentation will take place at Farmingdale State College from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM on October 13, 2017 . Register Now, space is limited.
SARATOGA IS SOLSMART
In September, Saratoga joined New York City in achieving a SolSmart designation as part of a Department of Energy-supported program. With assistance from the National League of Cities, Saratoga earned a SolSmart Silver designation just ahead of the September 26th ribbon-cutting for their municipal array on a local landfill. Sustainable CUNY helped NYC achieve a SolSmart Gold Status and provides technical assistance toward earning designations through the SolSmart program. If your community is interested in free assistance from the ombudsman team and federal recognition for smart solar policies, please email nysolar@cuny.edu to partner with Sustainable CUNY in the program.

FROM THE DIRECTOR
As the solar industry continues its vigilant watch, as it should, on upcoming Federal policy rulings and State alterations to the values of solar and solar+storage, keep in mind the work we can do to continue the momentum of New York's Solar Market. I'd like to thank all the industry, agency and utility leaders who have spent countless hours around the table with us, and continue to do so, to streamline the permitting process for solar, and now for solar+storage. Those who finance, install and permit are the heart and soul of this energy sector, and the ones who need a stable playing field. We need to work together as we have for the last decade to keep our fingers on the pulse of the solar market. Join the NY Solar Roundtable and keep those comments coming so we can continue to bring them to the table. nysolar@cuny.edu
