Voyage to Excellence Open House: Tonight at 7 p.m.!

Incoming freshmen and their parents are invited to attend this year's annual open house, Voyage to Excellence, tonight (Wednesday, Nov. 29) from 7-8:30 p.m. in the North Building Fieldhouse. The evening is meant for exploring H-F's academic and extracurricular opportunities for the Class of 2022.
If there is an 8th Grader in your household, please join us on this special night!

H-F Mathletes score big at Lincoln-Way
Congratulations to the H-F Mathletes for some outstanding performances in a meet at Lincoln-Way West High School on Nov. 15.
The team was led by the juniors who took 1st Place for their competition on systems of equations. Jimmy Humphrey & Josh Maicach scored perfect competitions, and Julian Garcia, Alannah Hill & Khari Hill also contributed to the score.
Also scoring perfect competitions on one of their contests were seniors Declan Cawley, Michael Colton & Allie Mangel; junior Matt Piotrowski; and sophomores Janellie Roach & Matti Schneider.
Lastly, sophomores Matti Schneider & Miles Maltbia finished in 2nd Place in the Frosh-Soph Group competition!

Vikings in Print
Four Creative Writing Vikings have recently been published in a special anthology printed by DePaul University's Big Shoulders Books: senior Oyindasola Ayorinde; and Class of 2017 alumnae Payton Gallery, Margaret Palomo & Cheya Washington. The collection, Write Your Heart Out, is an interactive anthology about young adult relationships. |
Two Vikings have been published in the Autumn 2017 edition of The Stuttering Foundation: junior Taylor Watson and Class of 2017 alumnus Ryan Mitchell. They shared their stories about their experiences with stuttering and how they worked to improve their communication abilities and self-confidence. Both students have worked with Ms. Boyd, H-F Speech Therapist.

H-F Speech ends November on a strong note
The H-F Speech Team competed in two pre-Thanksgiving Tournaments at
Thornton Township and Reavis High Schools. The Novice team graduated and
placed 3rd out of 22 teams at its first varsity tournament, including two tournament
champion titles! The Varsity team powered through with a partial team, placing in the
middle of the pack.

- Evelyn Perl: At the IHSA Girls Swimming & Diving State Finals, the H-F sophomore finished 35th in the 200m Freestyle and 40th in the 500m Freestyle.
- 2016-17 Edda Staff - The H-F literary and art magazine, Chaos Theory, earned a Gold Medal from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. In the Verbal/Writing category, students earned 394/400 with 19/20 Excellent ratings. In the Art category, Excellent ratings were given for originality, strong impact, technical merit & media variety. The magazine is sponsored by Ms. Mustafah, English.
- H-F Inspirational Voices - The performance group entertained veterans at Hines Veterans Hospital for Veterans Day. Also in November, they performed at Victory Sierra Ridge, Sunrise, Waterford Estates and Brookdale senior living facilities. Inspirational Voices is sponsored by Ms. Brumfield & Mr. Davenport, Instructional Assistants.
- Spanish National Honor Society - Students in SNHS donated two Thanksgiving baskets for Rich Township Hispanic families in need last week. It included ingredients such as corn husks, masa, beans and fresh turkeys. The SNHS sponsor is Ms. Mazzola, World Language teacher.

On Tuesday, Dec. 5, Homewood School District 153 will host Holocaust survivor
and critically-acclaimed author
Marion Blumenthal Lazan at 6:30 p.m. in the James Hart School gym. This free event is open to the public.

The Village of Homewood will celebrate the holiday season on Friday, Dec. 1, with an evening full of activities from 5-9 p.m. in downtown Homewood. Be sure to stop by the Homewood Science Center to meet with Viking Orchestra student-volunteers!
