Governance as Leadership

In 2013, BoardSource published a book called Governance as Leadership to help Executive Directors assist their boards in becoming more active and effective.  While the book is highly recommended, this article is a great summary for those short on time.

As we work to build strong and effective boards with a demographic that is often a bit different than most philanthropic boards; considering the lessons offered in Governance as Leadership can help us formulate steps and activities that will be meaningful to our board members, and help them learn their role well.  This resource highlights the 3 modalities of governance, describes strategies for board meetings that utilize the 3 modalities, offers a Q and A section, and provides citations for further reading.  Many of these same tactics are also useful in advisory and task team meetings with staff and family leaders.
Outcome:
Enhancing your center's ability to effectively manage their work and maintain a stable, effective organization.
