New Board Member Spotlight:
Mark Deutsch
Mark Deutsch first learned about SCAN's work through his involvement in the Western Henrico Rotary. Years later, he became re-engaged through former SCAN Board member, Tiffany Lange. He brings a strong passion for the wellbeing of children to his work as a SCAN Board member, currently as the President and CEO of the largest pediatric medical practice in Central Virginia.
"Children are the most vulnerable among us. They rely on adults for nurturing, caring, guidance, and love (to name a few). When children face challenges that are difficult to fathom for most of us (I know they are for me), SCAN is there to support them and to help their parents become the best parents they can be. I view effectively raising children to be of utmost importance to society -- from a spiritual, economic, and a security perspective -- and I believe SCAN serves an integral role in that critical function."
Mark also shared that his faith has lead him to firmly believe in the law of cause and effect. He admires SCAN's ability to act, instead of just talking. Mark says being able to hear the stories of those who have been impacted by SCAN, both those who receive services and those who deliver services, has been the best experience of his board membership thus far. He's enjoyed getting to know SCAN staff, who he believes put their heart and soul into everything they do to serve the children of RVA.

There's still time to be part of the SCAN Santa Shop!
We need your help to bring the joy of the holidays to the children served by SCAN. SCAN's Board of Young Professionals hosts the annual Santa Shop in December to help provide families involved in SCAN's programs the opportunity to "shop" for toys for the holidays.
We are looking for new, unwrapped toy donations for children age 0-17, as well as gift wrapping supplies donations.
Donations can be dropped off at the SCAN office at 103 E. Grace Street by Friday, December 8. Please call 804-257-7226 to set up a drop off time.

Donate now to help create a sensory room at the Circle Preschool Program!
The CPP Sensory Room will be a seperate room at the St. James's Children Center where children from our preschool (and other classrooms) can go when they need to deregulate. The room aids the child in several ways including providing a safe space to regulate and teach the child about their own sensory experiences and how to use the environment (the room, the equipment in the room) to promote calming and safer expressions of feelings.
Donations will help fund everything needed in this room, which will total $5,000.

Kids and Service Hours
Denise Noble, with SCAN's Families Are Magic program, shares some insight into getting your kids involved in community service in this months Richmond Family Magazine.
"I encourage children of all ages and families to volunteer whenever the opportunity arises. There is so much to be gained from participating in community service. Volunteers of any age have greater empathy as they are able to experience first-hand a situation different from their own.
Being able to relate to and understand others' feelings and experiences is a great social skill. Community service will help your daughter develop empathy. At twelve, volunteering will also help your daughter learn more about herself. This knowledge can have unlimited potential in impacting her future. She will have the opportunity to think about what she enjoys, what she excels at, and what bores her. This insight is invaluable, and the new experiences she has with community service can help shape her future."

Greater Richmond TICN aids in efforts to create Trauma Informed Community Network in Roanoke!

SCAN's Trauma Informed Community Network Co-Coordinators were delighted to consult on the The Roanoke Valley Trauma Summit, held on November 16. Approximately 50 Summit participants from over 20 Roanoke Valley agencies watched the film Resilience, listened to a presentation about trauma-informed practice and learned about efforts of the Greater Richmond TICN.
At the end of the Summit, attendees unanimously voted to begin a Roanoke Valley Trauma-Informed Community Network. The Greater Richmond TICN is excited to see trauma-informed efforts have an impact in communities across Virginia.
