 Retrofit Market Boosts Avionics Sales by 4.1 Percent Over First Nine Months of Last Year
The Aircraft Electronics Association recently released its third-quarter 2017 Avionics Market Report. In the first nine months of the year, total worldwide business and general aviation avionics sales amounted to $1,732,915,016.06, or more than $1.73 billion as reported by the participating companies. The figure represented a 4.1 percent increase in year-over-year sales compared to the first nine months of 2016 amount of $1,664,109,078.49.
Sales during the third-quarter months of July, August and September in 2017 were $587,941,517.00, a 7.1 percent increase compared to the 2016 third-quarter sales of $548,849,118.30. Avionics sales in the retrofit market increased more than 28 percent in the past year.

Registration has opened for the 61st annual AEA International Convention & Trade Show, the largest gathering of general aviation avionics manufacturers, distributors and government-certified repair stations in the world. It is the platform of choice for the introduction of new avionics products and services coming to the marketplace in 2018. The event takes place March 26-29, 2018, at the MGM Grand Resort & Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Attendees must register by Dec. 15, 2017, to receive the early-bird discount price of $625 (AEA member rate) for a full convention registration. The early-bird promotion offers a $150 per person savings off the on-site registration fee. ADS-B Installations
The FAA published its long-awaited Technical Paper (AFS-360-2017-1 (Rev 0, 09/25/2017)) regarding the installation of ADS-B Out equipment. The purpose of this technical paper is to further explain the FAA's policy regarding alterations to aircraft for the installation of ADS-B equipment. This policy applies to aircraft certificated under 14 CFR § 23, 25, 27, 29, and their predecessor regulations. This technical paper provides policy pursuant to compliance with 14 CFR § 91.225 and § 91.227. Reference the FAA policy memorandum dated March 2, 2016, or later revision. More...
SARSAT Beacon Accidental Prevention Initiative
False alerts from accidental activation of 406 MHz emergency locator transmitters is a major issue being addressed by the NOAA Search and Rescue Satellite Aided Tracking, or SARSAT. A false alert is a non-distress activation of a 406 MHz emergency beacon (ELT, PLB, or EPIRB). It can be caused by accidental activation during testing, mishandling, improper installation or unfamiliarity with beacon operation. In fact, 6,230 false alerts were generated by ELTs in the United States in 2016. When an ELT is activated, search and rescue personnel responds immediately to every activation of a 406 MHz SARSAT beacon. That response will only stop when it has been proven that the activation was a false alert. Every false alert has the potential to put rescuers in harm's way and waste valuable resources. Always ensure you are conducting self-tests and annual tests according to the manufacturer's instructions for your ELT. Each year, the majority of 406 MHz ELT false alerts occur during testing and maintenance.

ROCKWELL COLLINS' Head-up Guidance System was selected by Emirates for the 150 777X aircraft on order. The company also was selected by Azerbaijan Airlines to provide its global, high-speed broadband in-flight connectivity, overhead in-flight entertainment and a full suite of advanced avionics-including Rockwell Collins' MultiScan ThreatTrack weather radar-for 10 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. Deliveries are expected to begin by the end of this year. For the fourth year in a row, Rockwell Collins has received a perfect score of 100 percent on the 2018 Corporate Equality Index. The National Veteran-Owned Business Association and its Vetrepreneur magazine named Rockwell Collins one of the top 25 U.S.-based companies dedicated to veterans-earning the distinction as a 2017 Military Friendly Supplier Diversity Program.
AVMAX took delivery of the fourth batch of two aircraft of a 27 Dash 8-100 aircraft purchase deal from Piedmont Airlines, with delivery stream through the first quarter of 2018. Avmax also leased ex-Maroomba Dash 8-102 (msn 388) to Air Kiribati Ltd. The company also is looking for more than 50 new employees to help backfill current MRO lines as well as start up two new MRO lines.
FLIGHTCELL INTERNATIONAL announced that successful integration between the Flightcell DZMx and the AKV ETM1000 Engine Trend Monitoring system has taken place at AKV's facilities in Camarillo, California.

GARMIN introduced new features for the Garmin Pilot application for Android and iOS mobile devices. Garmin Pilot 6.2 for Android incorporates approach chart overlays on the moving map, enhancements to stadium TFRs, glide range ring, logbook tracks and more, while the 9.1 version of Garmin Pilot for iOS adds a new high-resolution basemap, worldwide gridded winds and a streamlined Connext devices page. Garmin also announced the latest software upgrade for the GTN 650/750 touchscreen series is now available. New GTN features include visual approach guidance, control and display of the GTX 3000 transponder and GTS 8000 Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS II)/Airborne Collision Avoidance System (ACAS II), as well as LNAV+V approaches without Space-Based Augmentation System (SBAS) service. Garmin also celebrated the delivery of the one-millionth certified avionics product from its manufacturing facility in Olathe, Kansas. The milestone product was a GTX 3000 DO-260B compliant Mode S Extended Squitter transponder.
JETSUPPORT has been authorized as a full-service maintenance, repair and overhaul GOGO BUSINESS AVIATION dealer and will participate as a partner for hardware sales and installations across Gogo's product portfolio on business aircraft.
AVIATION SPECIALTIES UNLIMITED received notice from Transport Canada that it has received an STC on the Airbus AS350. ASU modified the AS350 for HNZ Topflight. The modification was ASU's 208th on this airframe globally.
REBTECH announced a partnership with KUERZI AVIONICS of Lommis, Switzerland. Kuerzi will perform night vision filter implementation and aircraft installations for REBTECH in Europe.
STANDARDAERO entered into an exclusive teaming agreement with GDC Middle East and Horizon Shield Corp. of Riyadh to provide MRO services, engineering support and design services for military aircraft operators in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. StandardAero Business Aviation also launched a new internet-based customer service portal, called myStandardAero.com, which will serve as a project management tool to allow customers to review and approve MRO service projects and programs in real time, online. ACSS, an L3 and Thales company, announced a sales agreement with BENDIXKING to be the exclusive distributor of the NXT-700 Mode S Transponder for business jets and military aircraft. The agreement offers aircraft operators a sales channel for purchasing and installing the ADS-B compliant transponder effective immediately.
ASTRONAUTICS CORP. OF AMERICA agreed to a contract modification with the FAA to continue to the next phase of the agency's Aircraft Systems Information Security/Protection program.
ESTERLINE Avionics Systems signed an agreement with Emirates to supply its CMC Electronics Intermediate Gain Antenna, the CMA-2200SB, to be fitted on the Boeing 777X aircraft, with deliveries starting in early 2020. Esterline CMC Electronics and NovAtel Inc. announced a new strategic partnership, extending their collaboration in Global Navigation Satellite System positioning technology that started in the late 1990s. Esterline Simulation Visual Systems launched its new high-resolution Treality SEER Dome displays at I/ITSEC.
