Network Advocacy Updates

Re-position your agency and align yourself with The
NET WORK to advance causes and policy.
  • Protect SSBG, Protect Vulnerable Children, Adults and Families from Future Budget Cuts
As Congress seeks to pass major tax legislation, the
Social Services Block Grant (SSBG) a nd other programs that serve and protect children, older adults, and people with disabilities are being targeted to pay for it. If the current tax bill passes, SSBG will be subject to automatic cuts that would eventually eliminate the program if no action is taken.  SSBG gives state and local agencies critical, flexible support to help vulnerable children, adults and families.
Don't let Congress hurt vulnerable children, adults, and families. Join the Network in urging Congress to protect SSBG from future budget cuts.

  • Supporting Older Adults Struggling with Food Insecurity and Malnutrition
Many NJHSA agencies have expressed deep concern about seniors in their communities struggling with food insecurity and malnutrition. This week in Washington, NJHSA endorsed two new pieces of legislation in Congress to address this issue:
    • The Nourishing Our Golden Years Act (S. 2085), introduced by Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Robert Casey (D-PA), would streamline the application process and reduce the burden on states in the administration of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), also known as the Senior Food Box Program. CSFP provides low-income adults over age 60 with monthly boxes of shelf-stable, nutrient-rich USDA foods. In 2018, CSFP will serve nearly 700,000 seniors, delivering crucial nutrition to enable them to preserve or improve their health and independence. This program is a vital lifeline for many seniors and NJHSA is proud to support this legislation.
    • The SNAP Simplification for the Elderly Act (H.R. 4521) was introduced on December 1, 2017, by Rep. Al Lawson (D-FL). This bill would make critical changes to improve how SNAP, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and the Medicare Savings Program serve the elderly and disabled by proposing simplification of recertification processes to increase the utilization of these programs by those who need them most. This legislation will take the necessary steps to reduce poverty and hunger in the U.S. in a way that builds upon existing programs and encourages innovation between federal, state, and local actors.
