Wins Solution Search Prize for Water Impact!
We're thrilled to announce that one of our
Andes Program's initiatives has won the 2017 Solution Search "Farming for Biodiversity" Prize in the category of "Water Impact." Florencia Zapata accepted the award, thanking our many partners in this effort and giving full credit to the high Andes communities of Canchayllo and Miraflores, Peru. The awards ceremony was part of a two-day capacity building workshop that gave all prize finalists a chance to share their projects and brainstorm on ways to collaborate and scale up their innovative solutions. This prestigious prize was awarded during the United Nations' Climate Conference (
COP 23) in Bonn, Germany.

Spotlight on Mountain Issues at COP 23 in Bonn. On to Rome!
TMI's Andrew Taber and Florencia Zapata have just returned from a marathon of 10 days promoting our Mountain Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) Program during COP 23 in Bonn. With our partner IUCN and other key organizations, we participated in several EbA workshops and events.
As chair of the steering committee for the Mountain Partnership, TMI also helped organize and moderated or spoke at high-level events focusing on today's mountain challenges. TMI moderated a session on "Implementing the 2030 Agenda and Paris Agreement in Mountains" that featured panelists from Kyrgyzstan, Italy, Chile, Turkey, Bhutan, UIAA, FAO and CAHC. We joined forces with the Jamaican government for the "Mountains and Islands: Building a Coalition for Vulnerable Ecosystems" event with speakers from Jamaica, Italy, IUCN, the Global Island Partnership and the International Climate Initiative of the German Federal Ministry of the Environment.

Next up? The Mountain Partnership's Global Meeting in Rome, Italy in December. TMI's Florencia Zapata and Erin Gleeson are working with GIZ's "Mainstreaming EbA" program to offer a two-day workshop on EbA in mountains. The response from Partnership members has been very enthusiastic--we're now looking for a larger venue to accommodate all who want to be involved.

Scaling up Mountain EbA Program
At a recent meeting in Kathmandu, experts from government agencies, our NGO partners and TMI technical staff
reviewed the
methodologies for baseline studies and climate change vulnerability impact assessments presented by the faculty of CDES. The result was insightful, valuable feedback to refine upcoming studies in the Chilime watershed of Central Nepal.
At the request of the Government of Nepal, TMI and IUCN are developing a training manual for the Ecosystem-based Adaptation approach in mountains. Our hope is that EbA will become a core part of the existing curricula for training government officials.
PERU:
The Mountain EbA technical team is now complete! We have just opened our office in Huancayo and are happy to welcome Dr. Elmer Segura (anthropologist), Doris Chavez (agricultural technician) and Mirella Gallardo (team leader, water and land resources engineer). They've been busy this month giving workshops in mountain communities and meeting
with government leaders and the Peruvian National Park Service.
