Malcolm Ryan steps down as General Manager

Mr Ryan advised Councillors that he will not be seeking renewal of his contract, due to expire on 30 September 2018, and in the interests of ensuring a smooth transition for the organisation, recently entered into discussions with Mayor Greg Cummings around a suitable departure date.

Deputy General Manager of Environment and Infrastructure, Hamish McNulty was appointed Acting General Manager following Mr Ryan's departure, effective 27 November 2017. Mr McNulty will remain in the position until a new General Manager is appointed, for up to a maximum of 12 months.

Bin collection days change

Bin collection days will be changing in Granville, South Granville, Guildford and a part of Merrylands from 11 December 2017.

Right now, residents can identify their new pick up day on an interactive map found by clicking here. Shortly, a letter will be delivered to every household in the affected areas and to be sure everyone knows their new collection day, we'll also be placing a sticker on residents' bins notifying them of the change a week before it comes into place.

To ensure a smooth transition, we'll have extra customer service support on hand over the Christmas and New Year period.

Enhancements set for Auburn Botanic Gardens

Cumberland Council will be developing a Masterplan for the Auburn Botanic Gardens to guide future improvements to the well-known features of the tranquil site.

The open space is one of Cumberland's most unique assets and the Masterplan aims to reinforce the longevity of the existing features and also increase the capacity of the Garden to service the community.

Now is the time for the community to share their thoughts on the Auburn Botanic Gardens. An online survey will be available on Cumberland's website until Sunday 17 December 2017. Click here to fill out the survey.

Learn to swim this summer

Summer is swimming season. Sadly, it's also peak period for the drowning deaths of children under 14.

Cumberland Council is a proud partner of Swim and Survive; a comprehensive swimming and water safety initiative of Royal Lifesaving that seeks to increases the water safety skills of Australian children to prevent drowning and increase participation in safe aquatic activity.

Swim and Survive is delivered in pools, schools and other aquatic locations across the country by qualified swimming and water safety instructors, and there are some near you!

You can enrol in learn to swim classes at centres in Granville, Guildford, Wentworthville or Merrylands. For more information, click here [insert link once live].

Residents needed for 're-wilding' project at Prospect Creek

Cumberland Council is supporting Conservation Volunteers Australia in a new project, 're-wilding' Prospect Creek.

Prospect Creek makes up Cumberland's south west border and has been severely impacted by its location in a heavily residential and industrial area, hosting a population of over 190,000 people.

In many places, vegetation has been cleared all the way to the waterbank, meaning that pollution caused by industrial runoff, rubbish dumping, weed invasion and other by products of modern life in the city is destroying the channel.

Now is the time to act and Cumberland is encouraging anyone who can to lend a helping hand.
