November 2017
Hello fellow Guild members and happy Fall!
I know that we are all happy that the Lowcountry is finally experiencing some fabulous fall weather and artful events! We have many exciting events going on at your guild. The annual Juried Signature Exhibit will be in early November, we've had our 1st Artist Critique session with another fabulous one following and our annual Holiday Party and Silent Auction is just around the corner. Remember, the funds we raise from our Silent Auction go towards our High School Senior Scholarship program.
I want to especially thank those of you that contributed to the first Arts Matter Day sponsored by the Charleston Regional Alliance of the Arts. This year, they will be matching funds donated to the Guild at 100%. Whether your donation went to CAG or to another art related non profit, we thank you. I also have more good news of a grant donation. The Guild has received a grant check in the amount of $9616.00 from the South Carolina Arts Commission. CAG thanks them for this generous support of our Outreach programs and we thank Steve Jacobs, our Business Manager for applying, following through and making sure that we stay in compliance as a 501 (c) 3 non profit organization.
In lieu of our monthly meeting for November, I invite you to attend the Signature Exhibit reception on Saturday, November 11th. We normally replace our February meeting for the Members Exhibit reception in the spring and thought it was a great idea to do the same for the Signature Exhibit! It's a lot to ask you to attend two events in a week and we would love for you to see our fellow artists that were juried into this very special exhibit of South Carolina artists.
All the details are here in your Easel! In the mean time, I know that many of you love this time of year to catch up on plein air painting and will all be gearing up for Thanksgiving with family and friends. I look forward to seeing you all at our Signature Exhibit reception and at the annual
Holiday Party and Silent Auction in December.

Taking Flight by Ginny Versteegen
|
Opening Reception
Friday, Nov 3,
5 - 8:00 pm
Charleston Artist Guild Gallery
160 East Bay St.
As a contemporary Impressionist, Ginny Versteegen has taken her color notes to a new level. The elements of color, soft edges and drama of the landscape all come together in her latest series of paintings. Connect with the artist and nature as you view this new body of work. From the light filled color notes of "Taking Flight " to the drama of "Spring Palette", Versteegen unveils the majesty found in color and light. Her use of rich, vibrant color gives the viewer a selective impression of a scene. Through the use of oil paint she expresses her feelings about the subject and the time of day. Color notes taken from her plein air paintings and nature are her inspiration. Working outdoors in plein air, allows the artist to gather information for her paintings first hand.

Spring Palette by Ginny Versteegen

Ginny moved to Charleston County in 2006, after traveling the world teaching art and painting. Her work exhibits an international flair for she has lived in Brazil, Holland and Spain. Ginny has been blessed by immediate acceptance into the art community of Charleston with solo exhibits, awards and purchase prizes from the City of Charleston, as well as the North Charleston Arts Council.
|
Recently, she was selected to have her painting, Shem Creek Glow, featured in the Mayor's Art Program at City Hall in Mount Pleasant. Her work may also be found in many private and public collections at home and abroad.
In addition to the Charleston Artist Guild Gallery, you may see more of Ginny Versteegen's paintings at the Perspective Gallery, Crickentree Plaza, Mt. Pleasant, SC and her website www.

The Charleston Artist Guild offers critique sessions which are
free and one of the most valuable benefits of your membership in the guild.
Please join us for a relaxing glass of wine and an inspiring painting critique.
Wednesday, November 8, 6:30pm - 8:00pm
Charleston Artist Guild Gallery
160 East Bay St.
Susanne Frenzel and Faye Sullivan, Artistic Growth Directors
We are very pleased to have Bob Graham, the "Saltwater Cowboy", as our November artist for the critique
session.
Bob has had an art career spanning more than 25 years. As a Charlestonian, he finds inspiration from its people and captures in graphite and watercolor their most tender and beautiful moments. "I don't like to do subject matter that has been done a thousand times before. I like to focus on individuals, what they were feeling or thinking..." Bob tries to capture the moment right before or after an event. It is in this moment of contemplation and reflection that he finds his subject matter...whether it is a person he passes on the street or a lone cowboy with his horse on the range, it is in these moments that he tries to capture and show to the rest of the world.
He exhibits locally at Studio 151 Fine Art Gallery in Charleston.
Please visit Bob's website to get more information about his work:

Upcoming Workshop -
"How to Get A Head"
with Robert Maniscalco
Saturday, Nov 4- 5, 10:30am - 4:30pm
5440 Ansley Trail, North Charleston
$225 for CAG members, $250 for non-members - lunch included both days
All levels are encouraged to participate
Mercedes da Silva
In these sessions artists will explore value-based "light on form" painting methods to create expressive, professional level portraits. Using live models, the focus will be on gaining a deeper understanding of observable values to achieve form, character and likeness. We will paint one finished portrait in our two days together. Robert will also present a few salient drawing and painting exercises in the morning sessions. Robert will teach you to think like a painter, presenting a short demo, paint-along. Honest observation and careful analysis of forms will be the key. Concrete, practical application, rather than meaningless theory, will be the order of the day. The instruction will be tailored to allow for a deepening of the individual's unique approach and response to the subject at hand. Expect lots of individual attention and nothing less than a major epiphany regarding how the subtle manipulation of light on form actually works in depicting realistic subjects. See class and workshop description for more of what we'll be discovering together. . Expect lots of individual attention here. (843) 486-3161. This will fill up quickly, so register today.

Art for Alzheimer's is one of the outreach programs of the Charleston Artist Guild.
Each month, several members from the guild visit nursing hom
es or Alzheimer's units to paint for an hour with the patients.
Photos are from the October visit to The Bridges of Charleston.
The
finished artwork is placed in a mat for them to keep and show off. The guild volunteers find these visits to be rewarding and enjoy sharing their love of art making.
Upcoming visits include
The Villages (the old Presbyterian Home) in Summerville,
November 9th and
Bishop Gadsden on James Island, December 7th.
