Board of Supervisors Meeting Highlights - December 6 

Chief McCarthy Recognized for 41 Years of Service to Moon
Chief Leo McCarthy is retiring from the Moon Township Police Department after 41 years of service, effective January 1, 2018. The Board of Supervisors presented Chief with a proclamation thanking him for his dedication, leadership and decades of service to Moon Township and the community. Police Department Promotions
In the wake of Chief McCarthy's retirement, Captain Greg Seamon was promoted to the rank of Chief of the Moon Township Police Department, effective January 1. Captain Seamon has served 28 years with the department, demonstrating great leadership and the ability to tackle difficult issues head-on. 
 
Sergeant Doug Ogden was promoted to the rank of Captain, effective 
January 1. With 21 years on the force, he has accumulated a wealth of experience and knowledge, including leading the West Hills D.U.I. Task Force and becoming a highly-trained and experienced drug recognition expert. 
 
Both men were sworn in at the supervisors meeting, with the promotions taking effect on January 1, 2018.

2018 Budget Approved
Supervisors approved the township's $15.5 million final 2018 budget. There will be no increase in the township millage rate, which is currently 2.74 mills.  View the 2018 budget online. 

Moon Parks to be Tobacco Free
Supervisors passed a resolution making all Moon Township parks tobacco-free parks by participating in the Young Lungs at Play program sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Allegheny County Health Department. The program aims  to help communities create tobacco-free parks, playgrounds and recreational areas for children.


Boy Scout Carl Cunningham Earns Eagle Scout Rank
The board recognized Moon Township  resident Carl Cunningham for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. A  member of Boy Scout Troop 905, Carl earned 31 merit badges and accumulated 128 combined service hours while serving in numerous troop leadership roles. For his Eagle Scout Leadership Community Service Project, Carl planned, raised funds for, and managed the landscaping and memorial tree planting at the United States Post Office in Beaver, Pennsylvania.

The Board of Supervisors regular public meeting is held on the first Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Municipal Building (with the exception of the January meeting, which will be Tuesday, January 2). Watch live on MAG-TV, Comcast channel 18 or Verizon channel 37. The meetings are rebroadcast throughout the month on MAG-TV. Check the website for times. You can also watch a recording online. Stoops Ferry Road Bridge Replacement Meeting

There will be a public meeting to
inform residents of the Stoops Ferry Road bridge replacement project. The project consists of removing the existing concrete bridge which carries State Route 51 over Flaugherty Run. The bridge is showing signs of deterioration and plans are to replace it with a new wider structure to accommodate a left turn lane. Plans also include reconstructing and widening the existing roadway, addition of a traffic signal and replacing the sidewalk across the proposed bridge.

Moon Township offices will be closed on Monday, December 25 and Tuesday, December 26 in observance of Christmas. Offices will also be closed on Monday, January 1 in observance of New Year's Day.

Seeking Volunteers:  Help Produce Community TV Shows

Moon Community Access Television (MCA-TV) is seeking volunteers to help film the happenings in and around Moon Township, including sports, community events, in-studio programming and government meetings. 

If you'd like to get in on the action, sign up for the next television production training course. Classes are free and open to residents of any community.
 
The training course is a series of four hands-on classes providing the basics of camera operation, lighting, audio and editing. Successful completion of the course provides the opportunity to be an official MCA-TV volunteer, ready and able to assist with any MCA-TV production.
 
Classes run from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays for four weeks beginning Thursday, January 25 at the MCA-TV studio located at 1700 Beaver Grade Road, Suite 140, Moon Township, PA 15108. To register, contact MCA-TV Director Allison Eastham at aeastham@moontwp.us or call 412.269.1191.  Space is limited.
Promote Your Non-Profit Organization on 
MCA-TV's Public Awareness Weekend

Join MCA-TV for the annual Public Awareness Weekend scheduled for  March 9-10, 2018. Public Awareness Weekend, is a two-day, 24-hour live television event featuring interview broadcasts with Pittsburgh-area nonprofits. Each group has an opportunity to speak for 30 minutes to educate viewers about their cause and encourage the community to get involved. All interviews air live during the event, and are rebroadcast periodically on MCA-TV, reaching approximately 35,000 households in Moon Township and surrounding areas. Any nonprofit organization interested in participating in Public Awareness Weekend should contact Allison Eastham at aeastham@moontwp.us or call MCA-TV at 412.269.1191. Interviews are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.
MTVFC Sportsmen's Bash Returns in April

The annual Moon Township Volunteer Fire Company Sportsmen's Bash will be  held on Saturday, April 21, 2018 from 12-7 p.m. at the Public Safety Building located at 1000 Beaver Grade Road. Tickets, which include food and refreshments, are available for a $30 donation. Contact a fireman or visit one of the fire stations on Mondays at 7 p.m. to obtain a ticket.
Calling All Filmmakers!  Enter MCA-TV's Film Fest 

The MCA-TV Film Festival returns in May, marking the seventh year for the competition. Area filmmakers are invited to put their creativity to the test in the following categories: Best Feature Film, Best Documentary Feature Film, Best Narrative Feature Film, Best Short Film, Best Documentary Short Film, and Best Narrative Short Film. Last year, thanks to monetary donations from local companies, MCA-TV awarded more than $3,200 in prizes.
 
Enter your original film before the May 10 deadline and watch the event live on MCA-TV on Saturday, May 19. Films will be judged by a panel of film experts from the Pittsburgh area. You do not have to be a Moon Township resident to participate.

2017 Property Tax Information

2017 Property Tax Deadline
The Moon Township property tax office is collecting the 10% penalty amount for both the Township of Moon and the Moon Area School District property taxes. The deadline for payment is Sunday, December 31, 2017. 

Because the last day of the 2017 collection year falls on a Sunday, and the office is closed on Monday, January 1 for New Year's Day, the last day the office will accept payments for any 2017 property taxes is Tuesday, 
January 2.

Any Township of Moon or Moon Area School District property taxes that remain outstanding after January 2 will be turned over to Weiss Burkardt Kramer, the delinquent tax collector.
 
The Moon Township Board of Supervisors recently voted to name the Law Offices of Weiss Burkardt Kramer as delinquent property tax collector, which is the same firm that collects delinquent property taxes for the Moon Area School District. After January 2, questions regarding 2017 delinquent property taxes should be directed to Weiss Burkardt Kramer at 412.391.0160.

Change of Address?
If you have any changes in mailing address or ownership, you must notify the Moon property tax office at 412.299.7446 as well as Allegheny County Treasurer John Weinstein at 412.350.4100.

Waste Management at Your Door Program

Can't make it to one of our recycling days? Waste Management offers a residential curbside special materials pickup. The "At Your Door Special Collection" program allows most Moon Township residents to easily and safely dispose of household materials.

There are three ways to schedule a collection:

After scheduling your collection date and time, a Waste Management representative will provide you with information and instructions for preparing your collection.
