INGRAM GALLERY | DECEMBER 2017

Matching the momentum at the gallery throughout all of 2017, December is filled with exceptional news, art and updates, including all that awaits us in 2018.  Travis Shilling's beautifully received public gallery exhibition at The Latcham Gallery, Customs: what you take and what you leave wraps up this Saturday.  In addition to having one last weekend to catch the show - all of Shilling's new works will be available back at the gallery come mid-month.  Artful Greetings: The art of original holiday greeting cards by renowned historical Canadian artists runs from Saturday, December 9 to 21 and makes for yet another reason to visit this month.  Ahead in this issue of Ingram Art News we cover highlights from Artful Greetings, as well as a look to the fresh schedule of exhibitions ahead in the new year.

On The Kingston Prize front, Daniel Hughes was announced last month at a gala reception at Peel Art Gallery as the recipient of 2nd place / honourable mention for his striking portrait of fellow artist and his dear friend, Shayne Dark.  Congratulations to Daniel and to all of the artists, including Brian Burke (R.C.A.), that were shortlisted for this top Canadian art prize.

ARTFUL GREETINGS
The art of original holiday greeting cards by renowned historical Canadian artists
December 9 - 21 . 2017

The brainchild of A. Y.  Jackson, Painters of Canada - Canadian artists of note creating high calibre original silkscreen greeting cards - was introduced in 1931 by William E. Coutts, the founder of Hallmark Cards Canada.  Intended as a way to secure steady income for artists and ensure proper credit for the otherwise nameless artists of greeting cards, the artful project was short-lived as a result of the high cost of creating the exceptional quality silkscreens paired with the economic downturn of the Great Depression.

"Twenty-six Canadian artists contributed to the series, among them several members of the Group of Seven who had already gained national recognition.  Moreover, it was A. Y.  Jackson who encouraged William E. Coutts to issue the series.  Jackson saw the production of the series as a source of revenue for some of the artists who were experiencing financial difficulties, and also as an opportunity to break with previous traditions and create contemporary Canadian greeting cards."  - 1931 - Painters of Canada Series | Exhibition of Christmas Cards, Public Archives Canada catalogue, 1983.

Complementing an alluring collection of these outstanding silkscreens, independent holiday cards by many renowned Canadian artists are also featured in Artful Greetings.  Please click here for a preview of a few of the exhibition highlights.  With works available by Frederick Banting, J. W.  Beatty, Charles Comfort, A. J.  Casson, Albert Franck, Sylvia Hahn, A. Y.  Jackson, Thoreau MacDonald, W. J.  Phillips (above), J. E.  Sampson, Carl Schaefer, Mary Hiester Reid and Kathleen C. Ward - Artful Greetings makes for a perfect seasonal pairing of art and the holiday spirit of appreciation and kindness.  All works are available for purchase and are a great complement to any art collection.

2018 EXHIBITION SCHEDULE

2018 marks Ingram Gallery's 30 year anniversary.  We are greatly inspired by our past as we look positively to our future.  As a heart and hub,  24 Hazelton Avenue has come to be a home away from home for artists, collectors and art lovers from around the world.  We are thankful for your support, our neighbourhood, and the warm sense of community that Ingram Gallery has established over the last three decades.

Our exhibitions begin next year with an in-depth look at one of our long-time favourites here at the gallery, Lillian Freiman (1908-1986).  Titled The Sensitive Vision, the exhibition has already been recognized with recent press from Blouin ArtInfo - please click here for the article and a preview of a selection of the works.

Both Daniel Hughes (left: Sita oil on panel, 24 x 18 inches) and Travis Shilling build on a great year in art with solo exhibitions at the gallery in 2018.  Jack Nichols (1921-2009) is featured in a spring solo.  Fluid will showcase his phenomenal line quality in an exhibition of his minimal and sophisticated ink on paper works.

We pair mutual admiration society members Florence Vale and Harold Town in a long overdue two-person exhibition.  Their personal narrative, as well as their professional relationship, will be explored through Town's Vale Variation series - an obsession brought about by Vale's provocative 1965 drawing Pyramid of Roses.

With additional group exhibitions, the 11th installment of our Summer Series, and our playfully titled June exhibition Rock | Paper | Scissors: Sculpture, Works on Paper and Collage - 2018 at Ingram Gallery will hearten with its pace, variety and opportunity for discovery.
