Great Hearts stands by the essential importance of a thorough immersion in music for students. We believe that music instruction is an education in beauty. Through their experiences of learning and performing classic works of music, our students experience the discipline and humility that true creativity requires.
Meet Mrs. Jenny Rathsburg, our high school music teacher, in her own words:
"Many students nowadays may attend four years of high school without any exposure to music. This is the limitation of 'electives' (as fine arts courses are often called in public schools). A student does not have the opportunity to learn those crucial, formative skills that music theory and performance practice bring because they are able to "opt out" and choose something else entirely. What a tragedy!
"This is the beauty of the Great Hearts liberal arts education: the regular exposure to music in 9th and 10th grade often makes students crave even more than their curricular music courses give them. When this realization sinks in, the magic begins. Freshmen, often skeptical of unfamiliar challenges like choral singing, frequently find they enjoy their music class so much that they sign up for Men's Choir or even audition for our top honor choir.
"This scenario happens over and over again, year after year, sometimes with the unlikeliest of students. It's what makes this job so gratifying as a Great Hearts high school music teacher. And as important as studying music theory is to the critical thinking and analytical development of a teenage mind, the beauty of this art is truly brought to fruition when the love for music and choral singing becomes a part of their life that they can't live without."

Outerwear Dress Code
As the weather finally gets cooler, here is a convenient reminder about our school's outerwear dress code:
- All outerwear must be clean and free of tears.
- A solid navy ¾-zip pullover (with Academy logo), solid navy sweater, or solid navy sweater-vest may be worn in the classroom and must be purchased from Dennis or Anton Uniform for the sake of consistency.
- High school students may wear blazers of the type sold at Dennis Uniform. If wearing a blazer, students may wear a red tie.
- Academy-issued athletic letter jackets or sweaters may also be worn in the classroom.
- Jackets, sweaters, and non-Academy sweatshirts may be worn for warmth outdoors during lunch but must be free of prominent logos and advertisements. These garments may not be worn into or brought into the classrooms; they must be stored in lockers during and between classes, other than during the lunch period.
- A uniform shirt (as specified under "Shirts") must be worn under the sweater or pullover and must be tucked in, and a belt must still be worn (where applicable). Violation of either of the above rules may result in revocation of the student's permission to wear the sweater or pullover for that year.

Thanksgiving Weekend:
Wednesday, 11/22 is a 12:30 pm release. There will be no school on Thursday, 11/23, or Friday, 11/24. This is an R&R weekend: no homework given or assignments/assessments due upon return.
Middle-School Spelling Bee
Thursday, November 30, at 3:00 PM in the Lund Center. Parents and siblings encouraged to come and cheer on our students!

PSO Snowstorm Is Coming!
The Veritas PSO is excited to announce the "Snowstorm" tradition is returning this holiday season!
"Snowstorm" is the single, largest way that VPA families THANK our faculty and staff for the GREAT-HEARTED work they do all year! Instead of individual gifts to faculty and staff, we ask that you contribute one collective, monetary gift that they can spend any way they like.
The faculty and staff absolutely LOVE this holiday gift - and the parents love the ease of it! Look for more information as we get closer to kicking off Snowstorm on

Winter Falcon Spirit Day, December 1
|
On Friday, December 1st, students may wear Veritas spirit wear shirts with their school uniform. (Please refer to the dress code below.) There will be a
breakfast before school in the courtyard generously hosted by the VPSO. There will also be an assembly at the end of the school day to honor the winter athletes. Due to the
assembly schedule (linked here), there will be no Lyceum that day, and lunch times will change.
Spirit wear shirts must be white, black, blue, or grey only (5K shirts and House Shirts are permitted as well). Shirts must be tucked in and other uniform rules apply. Game day jerseys are reserved for game use; please do not wear today.

This month, sophomores and juniors have an opportunity to share the poems they have written and win recognition--and publication--from the prestigious Kenyon Review's Patricia Grodd Poetry Prize for Young Writers.

Junior Parent Night - November 28th - Library 6:30pm
Junior Parents are invited to attend our annual Junior Parent night! We will cover the topics of Best Fit colleges, what colleges look for in a student, the application process and timeline, and financing college. There will be an question and answer session as well.
