Rowland El Students Get a Surprise Visit from Santa
|
|
A siren blares as a firetruck comes speeding up to Rowland Elementary. Don't fret -- it's not a fire -- Santa hitched a ride!
The Walnut Valley Rotary
surprised TK/Kindergartners at
Rowland Elementary
with a special treat -- hot cocoa and a visit with Santa! Kindergartners squealed with delight as they walked into the cafeteria to see Santa sitting by a tree. Each student received a stocking while trays of hot cocoa and cookies were served. Eyes grew wide as each child received a gift as they walked up to sit on Santa's lap and a photo was taken. After everyone had the chance to whisper in Santa's ear, the countdown to unwrap presents began! One of the students said,
"This was the best day EVER -- Santa AND Hot Cocoa!"
Truly, how does it get any better than that?!

Shoes That Fit Program at Northam Elementary

For more than 15 years, volunteers from the
West Covina United Methodist Church
have been making the holidays a little brighter for students at
Northam Elementary
. The
Shoes That Fit
program provides new shoes to students purchased by volunteers. A student from every class in grades TK-6 at Northam are selected and then surprised by volunteers with not only new shoes, but each student chooses a stuffed animal!

HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS BRING HOME AWARDS
|
|
The Board Room was packed to capacity last night as the Rowland Unified Board of Education recognized high school athletes from both Nogales and Rowland High Schools for a historic Winter Sports season.
Rowland High School's Cross Country Team won the Valle Vista League Championship for both boys and girls teams at all 5 levels (
pictured above
).
Runners finished in 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th place out of the 45 runners competing. All levels were undefeated in league during the season and had an overall amazing season.
The girls league championship was the 3rd in the school's history and 2nd since 1983.
They also qualified for CIF Prelims where they finished just one spot short of the final qualifying spot for CIF Finals, a feat yet to be accomplished in school history.
Rowland's Boys Cross Country team did qualify for the CIF Finals for the 2nd year in a row, but fell short of qualifying for the CIF State Meet. All in all, the entire program experienced tremendous success and had a historic season.

Under Coach Richard Salazar's leadership, the Nobles Varsity Football Team achieved records of 2-8, 4-6, 8-2, and 10-1 this season.
With a commanding win over Azusa to win its first league championship since 1991, Nogales was able to secure a spot in the CIF playoffs.
The 1st round match up against La Puente resulted in the Nobles' 4th defensive shutout of the season and a spot in the quarter finals against Silver Valley High School. Coach Salazar and his staff, the players, and the parents have spent countless hours in preparation for this season. The success that the team is currently experiencing could not be attributed to one sole person, but ALL members of the Nobles family who live and preach the team's concept of "All In."

The Nogales Girls Varsity Cross Country team
, led by head coach Xavier Chavez and assistant coach Ansley Medel,
had a historic season by winning their first league title and advancing to CIF in over a decade
.
During league, the girls were able to consistently place three to four girls in the top ten places with the top individual girl, a freshman, placing 1
st
and 2
nd
at league meets and finals. The team was able to achieve an 18-2 record, scoring 46 points as a team at league finals. Their success was accomplished through their dedication and commitment to improve throughout the season.

Osvaldo Cervantes
(
pictured above in red next to his Coach Chavez
) is a determined and motivated runner who since his freshman year has continued to progress to compete at the highest level competitions for
Nogales High School Boys Cross Country.
Under the direction of Coach Xavier Chavez, this year Osvaldo kept an undefeated season, winning his races in margins of 20-50 seconds.
Osvaldo became a back-to-back individual league champion and MVP in the Montview League. He also won three individual invitationals with a total of 7 out of 12 first place awards in all his meets. Osvaldo placed 3
rd
at CIF preliminaries and advanced to CIF Finals where he placed 5th in Division 3 and was the 4th individual to advance to the state meet. Osvaldo competed at the CIF State meet in Fresno, California and placed 44th out of 206 competitors.

Reorganization of the Board of Education

|
At last night's Board of Education Meeting, Lynne Ebenkamp was thanked for her service as this year's Board President. The new structure of the Board until December 2018 is:
Board President: Cary C. Chen, Board Vice President: Donna Freedman, Clerk: David M. Malkin, and Members: Angelena M. Pride and Lynne Ebenkamp.
