SIPPA Newsletter - December 2017

Keith Cowley
SIPPA President
Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to our December edition of the SIPPA newsletter.  We want your experience as a member of our division to be memorable. Your voice counts! Please do continue to share your student experiences and journeys with your IPPA Student Division leadership team. We very much enjoy your emails and endeavour to include you in every aspect of the opportunities we provide.

Our team at IPPA welcome your updates, your take on the research and your journey through positive psychology, so do be brave and send us an email at  [email protected].

In this month's newsletter, we are highlighting the opportunities IPPA's Student Division provides. I invite you to apply for one of the great roles available within the team or consider writing an article for our upcoming newsletters.

Maybe you would like to update us on your experiences and projects? We really want to connect with you, support you, and provide you with valuable resources, so please do reach out, email, message us on Facebook, or drop in if you're nearby. Studying can be isolating and stressful and it's much easier with a team on your side.  Let us be your team.

This Month's Newsletter
If you haven't yet visited our archive of past presenters then I cannot recommend a more inspiring and worthwhile reason to put down your books and stop typing.

Our Student Speaker Series  celebrates the student experience and perspective through our live online interviews and presentations with students who are making an impact in the field of positive psychology.  This could be a great next step for you.

Our student members and colleagues bring a highly professional approach to student-led research. Our most recent speaker, Marta Topor, presented her ideas crossing boundaries between clinical and positive psychology. Her inspiring approach explored the possibilities of supporting tic disorders with mindfulness and positive psychological approaches. Other previous presentations include Sue Ferguson, whose presentation focused on positive psychology and ageing: acceptance, hope and self-compassion in older adults. Sebastian Boo presented excellence in teaching, and Susan Mangan explored positive interventions.

What could you present? What is your passion? Is this your opportunity for personal and professional development? Is this your opportunity to connect with a larger audience?
Please send your ideas, thoughts or questions to [email protected].
It's such a great experience writing something you believe in and then seeing your work published amongst your colleagues and peers.

Your words could be shared with those you wish to collaborate with and admire. It is no small task to write an article which will be both interesting and engaging, but I know you can do it! We not only invite you to write articles as part of our newsletter, but we offer to support you. If you would like to discuss an idea, send us a draft, or use our guidance, then we're here to support you.

Perhaps you would like to write a book review or research brief of an article you found interesting. Maybe you would like to provide commentary on an issue facing students who are studying positive psychology (e.g. how to apply for a PhD, how to find support for your work, how to explain what positive psychology is to varied audiences). Send us your articles or ideas!
If you have recently contacted us requesting a mentor, we are working on your request and will be in touch shortly.

Whether you're an undergraduate, graduate, or postgraduate, we would like to connect you with other graduate students and professionals to support your journey.  We're always seeking new mentors. Are you a graduate student who could support an undergraduate student? Please do get in touch even if only to ask a few questions.
From SIPPA's Mentoring Co-Chairs, Sarah Bourdeau and Sierra Trudel:
