Welcome to All Saints Church! |

Keeping Advent
Last Sunday, December 03, ushered in a "new year" in the Church; the beginning of a liturgical cycle of readings, fasts, and feasts through seasons which correspond with the life and ministry of Jesus and his followers.
To be a follower of Jesus is to stand between His two arrivals: his birth in Bethlehem more than two thousand years ago and His promised second coming at the end of days. Advent pertains to both, so it is a season of preparation and of anticipation. That's why, at All Saints, we use the Tau Cross, or Anticipatory Cross, during Advent.
Advent is filled with meaning, and in many homes and communities rituals of wreaths, prayer, calendars, and devotionals help people to heed the baptist's cry, "prepare the way of the Lord." Participating in or practicing a variety of rituals allows us to focus more closely on the meaning of the season, as well as our relationship with God.
As is written below, "
whether you're new to the faith or steeped in its traditions," I share with you some information and resources to help you Keep Advent. From the website:
From our early history, Christians have observed the Advent and Christmas seasons not simply as holidays, but as holy days. In Advent, we prepare our hearts for Christ's arriving. At Christmas, we joyfully celebrate His birth.
Today, as our culture celebrates an increasingly secular, commercialized version of "the holidays," it's more important than ever for Christians to keep Advent and Christmas. We need to reclaim these holy seasons - not for our culture, but for ourselves - and rediscover the life-giving practices that have shaped Christian faith and worship over the centuries.
At KeepingAdvent.com, we invite you to do that. Whatever your denominational background, whether you're new to the faith or steeped in its traditions, this site is meant to be a guide for you - a comprehensive resource to help individuals, families, and churches journey through the Advent and Christmas seasons with Christ-centered expectancy and joy.
However you choose to celebrate this season of preparation and anticipation, may it bring you closer to the incarnate Word of God.
Peace and Blessed Advent, Fr. Jim+

From the Organist/Choirmaster Search Committee
|
The search committee will be meeting this week to discuss our candidates thus far. Our next steps will be the scheduling of online interviews with the candidates about whom we would like to learn more. Since it appears likely that there will be a period of at least some weeks between Frank Rippl's last Sunday and the the arrival of our next organist and choirmaster, preparations are also underway for the interim period.
Please pray for our candidates, all of whom are discerning where they are led to minister, and one of whom may well be our next organist and choirmaster.

Advent greetings!
Let Us Pray
is a prayer book resource for our little ones that is being offered throughout the next ten weeks or so. It helps children navigate the liturgy with illustrations (and lots of sheep). If your child would like to use a copy during church, they may check with their Sunday School teacher or in the book rack at the back of the church.
St. Nicholas
will be visiting All Saints on Sunday, Dec. 10 at the end of the 10:00am service. For anyone wishing to bring a gift to give to children at Harbor House, new toys and new/like-new children's books are welcome. Please DO NOT wrap the gifts this year - all gifts are screened and personalized by the staff at Harbor House. Thank you in advance for your generosity!
Kids' Day In
registration is open! Children ages 4-5th grade are welcome to join a morning of festive fun on Saturday, Dec. 16. We will begin in Kemper Hall (Room 10) at 1:00pm and wrap up by 4:00pm. Adult & Youth Group volunteers are needed to assist.
REGISTER HERE.
A special Children's Message
will be offered at the 5:00pm Christmas Eve service. Children of all ages are welcome to participate, and a small gift will be given to each child on behalf of All Saints. All children-those from the parish and those visiting-are welcome!
There will be no Sunday School or Youth Group on Sunday, Dec. 24 and Sunday, Dec. 31 due to the holidays. Classes will resume on Sunday, Jan. 7.

Please contact Erin
to express your interest. Thank you!

St. Nicholas
|
On
Sunday, December 10
, St. Nicholas will visit us at the end of the 10am service. All are invited to bring a small
unwrapped
gift (book or toy) to donate to children at Harbor House in Appleton.
For those not familiar with it, the visit of St. Nicholas on a Sunday near his feast day (December 6) is a long-standing All Saints tradition. St. Nicholas will arrive at the end of the service, give a brief speech to the young children, and present them each with a cookie or piece of candy.

Frank Rippl Music Scholar Endowment Fund
|
The members of the All Saints Choir had a great idea about how to honor Frank Rippl's commitment to music and the community - raise funds to support a named endowment as a way that Frank's spirit of service can continue giving into the future. The Vestry agreed and has established the
Frank Rippl Music Scholar Endowment Fund
.
The endowment will provide support to the music program of the parish as well as community musical activities or programs. Some examples that might receive support include a Frank Rippl Music Scholar (a paid chorister or musician); honoraria for musicians at events; rental of musical equipment for events; scholarships for students learning to play the organ, just to name a few. The scope will only be limited by the size of the endowment. The larger the endowment, the more that can be accomplished! Specific use will be determined by the All Saints Vestry.
You can help build the fund by
placing a check in the offering plate (payable to All Saints with "Rippl Fund" in the memo),
sending it in the mail, or even by
giving online. Learn more and give by
visiting the All Saints website.

Spread the Word About the Frank Rippl Endowment!
|
SHARE THE JOY!
If you know of any former All Saints member or community member who might like to help build the fund, please do tell them to visit the website. Thank you!

Advent - A New Beginning
|
The beginning of the Church Year was on Sunday, December 3, the first Sunday of Advent. It is a new beginning of the cycle of the church Lectionary - Year B.
An exciting new beginning this Advent is that each of the children in the parish is receiving
Let us pray: A little kid's guide to the Eucharist
. This wonderful book by Jennie Turrell helps children to follow the Eucharistic service. The book combines visual art and Ms. Turrell's poetry with Eucharistic Prayer B. The accompanying photos are from
Let us pray
. In order to give our children a good foundation in following the liturgy, we will use Eucharistic Prayer B from Advent 1, December 3 through the Last Week after the Epiphany, February 11, 2018.
A second thing of note for Advent this year is that our wreath lighting at the 10am service is being led, each week, by a different Christian Formation Classroom. It began with the Godly Play class on December 3, to be followed by the Multi-age 1 class on December 10, the Multi-age 2 class on December 17, and the Adult class on Advent 4, December 24. We have a new Advent Banner which contains candles to be 'lit' during the opening liturgy led by the classes. (Our Advent wreath will be lit prior to the service.)
An Advent Prayer:
God of new beginnings, you draw near to us in word and sacrament to strengthen and renew us; kindle in us the fire of your Spirit, may your light so shine through us that all may welcome your Son at his coming. We ask this in the name of Jesus Emmanuel. Amen.
