Turner Stokes:  On Wednesday, Turner was admitted to the hospital near La Plata, MD, where he lives with his son. He may have had a mini-stroke, but is undergoing testing to find out more. Please keep Turner in your thoughts.

Classes and Events

NEW Daytime Meditation Group: Wednesdays at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel, began Wednesday, December 6th, facilitated by UUCF member Alice MacDonald ( [email protected], 240.815.5406). We will begin with 45 minutes of silent meditation, and anyone is welcome to meditate for less time and then quietly slip out if that is your preference. Then, after a short break, there will be open discussion about our experience, either as needed or until 12:30 p.m.

Rally to End Gun Violence: Thursday, December 14, 5:30 to 6:00 p.m. On the fifth anniversary of the mass shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, Rev. Carl along with other members of Frederick Area faith communities and community leaders will be joining together to remember the victims of America's gun violence epidemic.  Join us for this gun violence awareness vigil on Thursday, December 14 from 5:30 to 6:00 p.m. on the front steps of Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ,  11 W. Church St., Frederick.

Feldenkrais employs guided attention and gentle movement with an emphasis on sensory learning. Frederick Refuge Recovery Open Meetings: Thursdays, weekly, 7:00 p.m. (Room 125). Refuge Recovery is a mindfulness-based addiction recovery community that practices and utilizes Buddhist philosophy as the foundation of the recovery process. Drawing inspiration from the core teachings of the Four Noble Truths, emphasis is placed on both knowledge and empathy as a means for overcoming addiction and its causes. Those struggling with any form of addiction greatly benefit when they are able to understand the suffering that addiction has created while developing compassion for the pain they have experienced. Rewrite Your Story: Change Your Past to Live a Better Present and Future: Saturday, December 9, 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. (Chapel)
We all have stories about who we are, what we have to do, and what we can and cannot accomplish. These stories keep us from living a life we love. But it doesn't have to be this way. In this workshop, fellow member and certified Life Coach Julia Jones will show you a way out. Participants will leave with tools and strategies for examining life events to create new stories that encourage growth, celebrate strengths, and create the freedom to help you find and live your best life.  Donations gratefully accepted for UUCF.

Meditation/Yoga (or Meditation-only) Mini-Retreat with Irene Glasse & Carl Gregg:  Saturday, December 16, 9:00 a.m. to Noon, (Sanctuary) : $15 in advance / $20 at door. Chili Potluck and Carol-Sing coming on Dec 17!  Save the date! Are you coming? What will you bring? Enjoy a fun. lovely evening for all ages. We start with a chili potluck at 5:00 p.m.  We need lots of chili dishes and plenty of desserts. We will provide cornbread and butter, but more cornbread is needed too. We'll serve hot cocoa, warm cider and cold cider. Kids can decorate gingerbread cookies. And then Nick IntVeldt will accompany us on many seasonal carols including all the old faves. Toys for Tots Season: Di Creedon of the Social Action Committee is serving as our liaison with Toys for Tots again this year.  Sponsored by the Marine Reserves, Toys for Tots collects new, unwrapped toys for children in need for distribution during the holidays. Di has placed the collection boxes by the entry coat closet for your convenience.  Bring a smile to a child during the holiday season!

For Our White Friends Desiring to be Allies: " I have been asked by two dear friends, "how can I be a stronger ally?" Being the slow emotional processor that I am, I wanted to spend some time with this before I answered them. I surely appreciate and love these two individuals, and I appreciate their vulnerability in asking me this question."

Inside the Movement to Free People Who Are Only in Jail Because They Can't Afford Bail:  Eliminating cash bail has become a focal point in the fight to transform the criminal justice system. Inside the wins and challenges of a growing movement that raises money to free people of color who are in jail simply because they can't afford to post bail. 

Community News

The Frederick School of Religion convenes for its 35th consecutive year of classes on February 12, 2018. The School is an ecumenical teaching organization that provides a 'Learning for Life'experience for both laity and clergy. The six-week series of classes includes a broad range of religious topics appealing to diverse faith groups. The location this year is Brook Hill United Methodist Church, 8946 Indian Springs Rd., Frederick, MD 21702 . Courses will be offered on consecutive Mondays and Tuesdays from February 12th  through  March  20th, with two courses each afternoon (1 to 3pm), and two each evening (7 - 9pm).   These eight courses covering a broad range of topics: the continuation  course on Banned Questions About the Bible with Carl Gregg; The Book of Daniel as Anti-Gospel with Larry Eubanks ; Wrestling For a Blessing from the Parables of Jesus with Anabel Proffitt; Augustine of Hippo   taught by Julie Wilberding ; The One Percent vs The 99 Percent led by Gerry Hanberry ; Miracles of The Galilee with Jordan Hersh; The Spirit's Call to Evolve taught by Toni Fish ; and, Faith and Art in the Christian Tradition with Charles Harrell. All courses are eligible for up to 1.2 Continuing Education Units.
