A Note from Mrs. Ryan    12/6/17
Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart,
all you who hope in the Lord. Psalm 31: 24

Dear Parents,

The virtue that we focus on during the first week of Advent is hope. At morning assembly today, I told your children that we have great reason to hope.  Signs of God's love for us are everywhere. Although the waiting to return to our home campus is hard we will be returning to a school that has been thoroughly remodeled and upgraded.

I believe many of you are unaware of the scope of water damage that took place in our main building.  About two weeks after the fire, our water company mistakenly re-pressurized the system. This sent thousands of gallons of water from the fire sprinklers in the Kindergarten flowing through our building. Since the roads were still closed the water sat for several days before it was discovered. Consequently the restoration company has spent six weeks cleaning all furniture, books, and equipment in the school for both smoke and water damage. All tile, carpets, whiteboards, wall covering and casework have been removed and discarded along with the bottom two feet of drywall. Of course the silver lining in all of this is that our insurance company is covering most of the expense and there is a solid plan in place to take advantage of the opportunity to upgrade the things that are not covered.  There will be an updated color palette, new playground, new covered eating area, and new technology.

The cost of the new HVAC system that you and your children have been longing for every time we have a heat wave is approximately $120,000. This will provide individualized units for both heat and air conditioning to each classroom. However, this upgrade is not covered by the insurance company and we need to raise these funds. The Parent Association is already making plans to kick off this fund raising at our Crab Feed on February 10th and I have a plan for enlisting major donors. We believe that this goal is very doable.

Although the move to our temporary campus is inconvenient, your children, the faculty and staff are making the most of it. During the next two days you will all have an opportunity to meet with your child's teacher and see what we have done to create cheerful spaces that are conducive to learning. We have morning-prayer and assembly in the main hall daily, the students will visit Santa Secret Store next week, the second grade angels are being created and a real sense of normalcy has set in. Classes are taking advantage of the downtown location to take some walking field trips to the theater for a nativity movie, the central library, and museums. Fr. Denis is giving every class a tour of our parish church so students can come to a better understanding of the sacred symbols that are so important to our Catholic faith.

Demolition of the preschool is almost complete and crews are working to remove the ruins of the covered eating area. Interior construction of the main building has also begun.  Although I cannot pinpoint a date for our return, I can tell you that many people are working 24/7 to get us back to a safe and beautifully restored campus as swiftly as soon as possible.

Sincerely,
Kathy Ryan
School Principal

BICYCLE GIVE AWAY
Yesterday, 'Bikes Because We Care' brought 38 brand new bikes to our students who lost theirs in the fire. Most of our students were joyfully surprised when they were called outside to see a huge gathering of shiny new bicycles.  We can't thank this charitable organization enough for their kindness and generosity. Not only did they bring St. Rose students new bikes, they also supplied St. Eugene's kids who also lost homes bikes too.  All total, they brought big smiles to close to 100 kids yesterday!

Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis)
