The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 2:14-22.

Brethren, Christ is our peace, who has made us both one, and has broken down the dividing wall of hostility, by abolishing in his flesh the law of commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby bringing the hostility to an end. And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; for through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. On November the 15th, our Orthodox Church begins the “Nativity Fast.” Our attitude and the purpose of our prayers during this time of the year is to seek the Lord Jesus who is already present with us. We call upon the Lord who is with us, near us, and in us to make Himself known to us through His Divine Grace, Love and Forgiveness. Thus, allowing Him to be the Light of our souls and bodies. Here comes the importance of the Nativity Fast. It is this period of time when we discover “Emmanuel-God with us”, and know that we have been blessed and sanctified. Further, we know that without Him we can do nothing and achieve nothing. Our priorities shift from wanting what is earthly to wanting what is heavenly. Food and worldly desires are replaced by prayer and the goodness of God. Therefore, Fasting is never a time of “Do Not” but rather a time for “Do”. This is the time to be more loving, forgiving, charitable, non-judgmental, and more committed to our church, tradition, and faith. “Enter not into judgement with thy servant; for no man living is righteous before thee” (RSV Psalm 143:2, LXX 142:2) It is important to note that the practice of Fasting pre-assumes a healthy body strong enough to bear and tolerate the effects of its observance. Among the very special days to keep in mind during this period of time are the following:

November 21st, Feast of the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple.

November 25th, Great Martyr Catherine.

November 30th, Feast of St. Andrew the First-Called Apostle.

December 4th, Feast of Great Martyr Barbara.

December 6th, Feast of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.

December 15th, St. Dionysios.

December 12th, Feast of St. Spyridon the Wonderworker .

“Lord our God, remember us, sinners and your unprofitable servants, as we call upon your holy Name, and do not put us to shame from the expectation of your mercy, but graciously grant us, Lord, all the requests that are for salvation, and count us worthy to love and to fear you from our whole heart, and in all things to do your will.” (3rd Prayer at the Lighting of the Lamps).

H Σαρακοστή των Χριστουγέννων και αρχίζει κάθε χρόνο στις 15 Νοεμβρίου. Οι ύμνοι στη Λατρεία μας θυμίζουν πως έχουμε εισέλθει σε αυτή την Ιερή Περίοδο, πως με τρόπο πνευματικό έχουμε πάρει κι εμείς το δρόμο που οδηγεί στη νοητή Βηθλεέμ, δηλ. την Εκκλησία, στην οποία ο Χριστός γεννιέται για να αναγεννήσει κάθε άνθρωπο που ειλικρινά πιστεύει σ’ Αυτόν. Απο τις 21 Νοεμβρίου (εορτή των Εισοδείων της Θεοτόκου) ψάλλουμε : «Χριστός γεννάται, δοξάσατε. Χριστός εξ ουρανών, απαντήσατε. Χριστός επί γης, υψώθητε. Άσατε τω Κυρίω πάσα η γη και εν ευφροσύνη ανυμνήσατε λαοί ότι δεδόξασται». Από τις 26 Νοεμβρίου (που είναι η επομένη της αποδόσεως της παραπάνω θεομητορικής εορτής) ψάλλουμε το προεόρτιο Κοντάκιο «Η Παρθένος σήμερον τον προαιώνιον Λόγον εν σπηλαίω έρχεται αποτεκείν απορρήτως. Χόρευε η οικουμένη ακουτισθείσα, δόξασον μετά αγγέλων και των ποιμένων, βουληθέντα εποφθήναι παιδίον νέον, τον προ αιώνων Θεόν».

Η ΝΗΣΤΕΙΑ Την περίοδο των 40 ημερών, δηλ. από τις 15 Νοεμβρίου έως και την παραμονή των Χριστουγέννων, οι χριστιανοί νηστεύουν. Όλες αυτές τις ημέρες δεν τρώμε κρέας, γαλακτερά και αυγά. Μπορούμε όμως να καταναλώσουμε ψάρι – εκτός φυσικά την Τετάρτη και την Παρασκευή. Η ιχθυοφαγία διαρκεί έως και την 17η Δεκεμβρίου. Ψάρι καταναλώνουμε και την εορτή των Εισοδίων της Θεοτόκου (21 Νοεμβρίου), ακόμη και αν η εορτή αυτή πέσει Τετάρτη ή Παρασκευή. Προσοχή: Και η παραμονή των Χριστουγέννων είναι ημέρα αυστηρής νηστείας και προετοιμασίας των χριστιανών για την ημέρα της Γεννήσεως του Κυρίου και ιδιαίτερα για τη Θεία Λειτουργία, η οποία τελείται πανηγυρικά. Συνεπώς, το βράδυ της παραμονής προσφέρεται μόνο για στιγμές πνευματικής ανάτασης και προετοιμασίας, ενόψει του Μεγάλου Γεγονότος της επόμενης ημέρας Είναι σημαντικό να σημειωθεί ότι η πρακτική της νηστείας προ-υποθέτει ένα υγιές σώμα. Ανάμεσα στα πολύ ειδικές ημέρες που πρέπει να θυμάστε κατά τη διάρκεια αυτής της περιόδου είναι οι εξής:

21 Νοέμβρη, εορτή των Εισοδίων της Θεοτόκου στο ναό.

25 Νοεμβρίου, Μεγαλομάρτυρος Αικατερίνης.

30 Νοεμβρίου, εορτή του Αγίου Ανδρέα του Αποστόλου.

4 Δεκεμβρίου, εορτή της Μεγαλομάρτυρος Βαρβάρας.

6 Δεκεμβρίου Εορτή του Αγίου Νικολάου του Θαυματουργού.

12 Δεκεμβρίου Εορτή του Αγίου Σπυρίδωνος του Θαυματουργού

15 Δεκεμβρίου του Αγίου Διονυσίου   

The Forty Day Blessing takes place at the conclusion of regular Sunday Divine Liturgy and essentially consists of prayers of joyful thanks for the safe delivery of mother and child. The service blesses the mother who has been absent from the sacramental life of the Church for forty days and formally presents the newborn child to the Church family for the first time as the priest formally brings the infant into the Sanctuary.

In imitation of Christ’s forty day blessing (Luke 2:22-38), the parents of the newborn bring the baby to the church in order for the child to be dedicated to the Lord.

This beautiful tradition is practiced throughout the Orthodox world. The parents become a symbol of the Virgin Mary and Joseph, while the priest symbolizes St. Symeon (in the at left) who held Christ in his arms at the time of the presentation.

"Come, O blessed of my father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was sick and you visited me." (Matt. 25:31-46).

When a member of our Parish is ill and has been hospitalized or may be recuperating at home, the immediate family of the ill person should contact Father Nicolas at  (212) 795-5870. It is beneficial to both the body and the soul when our priest prays for us when we are healthy or ill.

"Ελάτε, εσείς οι ευλογημένοι από τον Πατέρα μου, κληρονομήστε τη βασιλεία που έχει ετοιμαστεί για εσάς από τη θεμελίωση του κόσμου. Αρρώστησα και με φροντίσατε." (Ματθαίος 25: 31-46).

Όταν ένα μέλος της Ενορίας μας είναι άρρωστο και νοσηλέυεται ή αναρρώνει στο σπίτι, η οικογένεια του αρρώστου πρέπει να επικοινωνήσει με τον Πατέρα Νικόλα στο (212) 795-5870. Είναι ευεργετικό τόσο για το σώμα όσο και για την ψυχή όταν ο ιερέας προσεύχεται για μας όταν είμαστε υγιείς ή άρρωστοι.

Our Seniors start meeting again every Tuesday and Thursday from 12pm to 2pm at church.Welcome back! God bless you. This ministry's significance for our community goes without saying.

We are extremely excited to announce that our community is starting a parish library in the conference room. We already have a small selection of excellent books, especially for children. At this point, we need to increase the number of books and find one or two volunteers to start setting it up. If you are interested, please come and talk to me or call the church office.
