Seamus Harding Wins Diving Championship

Hillsborough resident Seamus Harding was recently honored with a proclamation by the Mayor and Township Committee for his outstanding achievements in Diving. Seamus, who is a member of the Diving Team at Notre Dame High School, also dives for LOB Diving, a United States Diving Club out of Rutgers University, coached by Fred Woodruff, Rutgers Diving Coach. Seamus recently won the Somerset County Championship, the Boys State Championship for Diving and was named to the All-American list as a Freshman.

Seamus' best dive was a forward two-and-a-half somersault from the pike position with a degree of difficulty of 2.6, and scored a 68.90. Seamus received the only three "10's" of the meet, earning one for a back dive from the pike position with a degree of difficulty of 1.6, where he earned 44.80 points, and two "10's" from the inward dive from the pike position with a degree of difficulty of 1.5. Seamus not only won the NJSIAA/Parisi Speed School Diving Championship, he also set a championship record with 591 points.

The Mayor and Hillsborough Township Committee extend their congratulations to Seamus for his achievements and wish him much success in his future diving endeavors.

Celebrate the Holiday Season with Festive Township Activities

Hillsborough Township will kick off the Holiday Season on Friday, December 1st with the annual lighting of the Township Christmas Tree. The festivities will begin at 6pm and will include train rides (weather permitting) from 6-8pm, a petting zoo, and a surprise visit from Elsa, Anna, and Olaf of Disney's Frozen. Santa will arrive courtesy of the Flagtown Fire Department at 7pm to help light the Christmas Tree. Hot Cocoa, Cookies, and Candy Canes will be provided, while supplies last, compliments of the Hillsborough Township Recreation Department. Kettle Corn will also be for sale. DJ Lou will perform outside around fire barrels to help warm the atmosphere, alongside live performances prior to the tree being lit.

The holiday fun continues on Tuesday, December 12th, as Hillsborough Township celebrates the first night of Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, with a Menorah lighting ceremony at 6pm. The celebration will be sponsored by the Chabad Center for Jewish Life. More information regarding this ceremony can be found at http://www.myjewishcenter.org/

Hillsborough Seniors Competed in 4th Annual Olympic Games

On Tuesday, September 26th, Hillsborough Township Seniors participated in their 4th Annual Senior Olympics. Bad weather forced the games to be postponed a week, however the Senior's spirits were not dampened. Committeeman Greg Burchette kicked off the start of the event, while Deputy Mayor Gloria McCauley handed out the medals.

Seventy-Six Seniors attended the Olympics with many participating in the various events, while 20 volunteers helped keep everything organized. During the festivities, Seniors enjoyed a BBQ lunch and received commemorative t-shirts at the end of the day.

The participants competed in eleven different events ranging from Team Bocce to Frisbee to Ladder Ball. Medals were given out to first, second, and third place for each event. Two seniors, Art Marino and Bob Easton finished the day with six medals each, the most of any participant.

At the end of the day, the Seniors participated in a closing ceremony that included a performance by the Hillsborough Rockettes and Rockets. The Senior Olympics were a great success and plans are already in the works for next year.

Tickets Now Available for NJ Devils' "My Town" Hillsborough Night

NJ Devils vs Philadelphia Flyers, Jan. 13th

The "My Town" Series Program now in it's 4th year highlights New Jersey towns during National Hockey League games played at the Prudential Center in Newark. The New Jersey Devils tested the program during the 2013-2014 National Hockey League season with 5 New Jersey towns as part of their pilot program. The success of the initial program, lead to an expanded program during the 2014-2015 season and will continue with enthusiasm this season.

This is a great event open to all ages! Tickets and Group Packages will be on sale for township residents who would like to attend. The Hillsborough Police Department will present the Honor Guard at the beginning of the game. Hillsborough Township will be recognized throughout the game, including a group welcome on the scoreboard. Following the game, Hillsborough residents will be invited to the ice for a post-game photo! In addition, January 13th is Chico Resch mini stick night honoring former Devil and current color commentator Glenn "Chico" Resch. The first 9,000 fans in attendance will receive a commemorative mini stick.

Hillsborough Chess Academy Celebrates Grand Opening

On Saturday, October 7th, the Hillsborough Chess Academy celebrated its Grand Opening. Several Township Officials including Deputy Mayor Gloria McCauley, Committeeman Tomson and David Kois, Business Advocate joined owners Reena Parekh and Moushmi Sheth with their friends and family for the ribbon cutting.

What Township Residents Can Do with Fall Leaves

Keep Your Lawn Healthy & Green by Cutting and Leaving it!

With Autumn in full swing, the leaves have begun to fall and cover your lawn. Hillsborough Township encourages you to help the Sustainable Hillsborough initiative by Cutting and Leaving It. Instead of disposing of your lawn clippings and leaves, try leaving your grass clipping on your lawn. This practice helps keep your lawn healthy and green. In addition, instead of placing leaves at the bottom of your driveway, place them in a compost heap in your yard. Compost piles are easy and cheap to construct and help to reduce Hillsborough's waste. For more information about Cut and Leave It, read the brochure on the township website.

"If you currently recycle your lawn clippings and leaves by staging them for pick-up through the Hillsborough Public Works Department leaf pick-up program, you are already helping to avoid air pollution and wasted resources. However, you can do more by reducing waste at the source. Leave the grass clippings on your lawn when you mow, compost your leaves, and let nature do the recycling for you," stated Deputy Mayor McCauley.

The Hillsborough Public Works Department will be running their annual leaf pick-up program starting in November.

Library Announces Thanksgiving Closures

The Hillsborough Library will Close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 22nd and will be closed Thursday, November 23rd. The Library will be open Friday, November 24th 9:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.

SCLSNJ to Close for Necessary System Upgrade: December 2, 3, and 4

All ten Somerset County Library System of New Jersey (SCLSNJ) branches will be closed December 2, 3, and 4 to allow for installation of the new checkout and catalog system.

SCLSNJ's new checkout and catalog system will offer easier searching yielding more relevant results, innovative account management features, effortless integration with eBooks and eAudio, a librarian-curated kids catalog, and an intuitive layout and user experience.

The installation will result in a three day Library closure, but it is worth the wait!

Adopt-A-Family Program to Provide Thanksgiving Meals

The eighth annual Adopt-A-Family program will help provide Thanksgiving meals for needy Somerset County families.

"We often hear that people want to help others within their own community," said Freeholder Patricia Walsh. "This is a perfect way for residents to earmark donations to help feed needy families in their own or neighboring towns." The program has collected $96,103 in donations since its inception in 2010.

The estimated cost of a Thanksgiving meal is $40. Anyone wishing to donate may send a check to any of the following local programs (please postmark donations by Nov. 18):

Lend a Helping Hand: Donations Sought for the Homeless

The holiday season is upon us. For many it is a time to lend a helping hand to people who are less fortunate.

With that in mind, Freeholder Brian D. Levine invites residents to donate personal and clothing items to be included in packages that will be distributed Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2018, when the county conducts its annual Point-in-Time survey of homeless individuals and families in Somerset County.

Point-in-Time volunteers will interview the homeless as part of Project Homeless Connect. Social service organizations will be on hand to screen clients for relevant services and distribute donated items.
