As the holidays draw near, many of us look forward to the moments when we gather around the Thanksgiving table and participate in beloved traditions with family and close friends.
But for many families in our community, it can be difficult to experience the joy of the holiday season when their loved ones have passed away.

As 2017 comes to a close, I encourage you to be a light to those experiencing loss. As I reflect back on the year, I am truly grateful for the opportunities Hospice of Santa Barbara has had to serve families going through serious illnesses or the death of loved ones.

I am also thankful for the opportunity we have to host our annual Light Up A Life tree-lighting ceremonies on Dec. 2 in Santa Barbara, Dec. 3 in Goleta, and Dec. 9 in Carpinteria. During this wonderful, heartwarming event, we take this time to remember and honor family members and friends who are no longer with us.

On behalf of everyone here at Hospice of Santa Barbara, I thank you, our supporters, for your continued generosity and dedication to helping those in need.

"Are You There? I Feel You Watching" and "Mature Questions Fall Like Ashes"
Two Poems by Catlin Rockman

Catlin Rockman is a fine art painter with more than 25 gallery exhibitions under her belt. Since moving from Boston in 2016, she has focused on writing, making new friends, and appreciating the bounty of the region every day. In February last year, both her mother and mother in-law died. One day apart. Santa Barbara hospice has been her rock, and a source of abiding nourishment. It's here, in Perie Longo's wonderful group, that Catlin began writing poetry to explore her grief.

Grieving Through the Holidays

Holidays are often a time of emotional ups and downs, especially for those who are grieving. During the holiday season we grieve not only for our loved one who has died, but also for the special moments of our life with them, including holiday celebrations. On top of this, the expectation to feel joyful during the holiday season can increase our distress or lead to feeling isolated from our friends and family.
