LaAmistad Celebrates Atlanta Heroes

On September 23, 2017 200 guests gathered to celebrate at the W Hotel in Buckhead. Atlanta Heroes, Jason Esteves, Assistant General Counsel of Equifax and member of the Atlanta Public Schools Board of Education, and Lawson Spence, Alternative Investments Director of Morgan Stanley Wealth Management and member of the Fulton County Educational Foundation, were honored for their work on behalf of the Latino community in Atlanta.

The Annual Gala is LaAmistad's largest fundraising event of the year and the proceeds benefit all aspects of the organization's work. Through the generosity of donors and sponsors, over $125,000 was raised to broaden LaAmistad's reach in the community.

The Suzanne W. Schirber LaAmistad Scholarship

Joshua Duarte & Cat McAfee
The relationship between students and the volunteers that help them week after week is very special. This year, LaAmistad received a beautiful and impactful reminder of that lasting connection. Suzanne Schirber was a longtime LaAmistad volunteer whose legacy of service will live on.

"Suzanne spent a lot of time with the LaAmistad students and formed an emotional bond with many of them", says husband Greg Schirber. "Her wish was to see LaAmistad students prosper and her hope was that this gift could help these students pursue higher education."

The Suzanne W. Schirber LaAmistad Scholarship is open to any student who has attended LaAmistad for at least one school year and is either a high school senior or enrolled in college.

The 2016-17 school year was the inaugural year of the scholarship and two awardees were selected. Joshua Duarte, a freshman at the University of Georgia, attended LaAmistad from 4th through 8th grade. Romiro Juarez, a freshman at Oglethorpe University attended LaAmistad from Kindergarten through 8th grade. Both recipients cite LaAmistad as highly influential to their success in school and life.

Congratulations to Joshua and Romiro and our profound gratitude to the family of Suzanne W. Schirber for creating this exceptional opportunity.

In compliance with this mission, grant funds will be utilized to support students of LaAmistad Afterschool by providing them with the tools and resources critical to advance their scholastic achievement.

Building a Culture of Philanthropy

On a recent visit to the Teen Center at Peachtree Presbyterian Church, one student asked me "What does a Development Director do?" It was a great question that started an important conversation. We talked about nonprofit organizations, funding, and the importance of giving. The Teen Center students were genuinely touched when they understood that their community, both individuals and organizations, supports their needs by making charitable contributions to LaAmistad.

Later that week, students in the Teen Center got to see philanthropy in action. LaAmistad partners at Atlantic Capital Bank made a generous gift this year and representatives Kendley Heffner and Glenna Reeves took the time to tour the program personally. They brought with them a very large check and the teens were eager to take a picture, shake their hands, and thank them for their investment in LaAmistad. This was a great learning opportunity for our middle and high school students. W e plan to continue these conversations about philanthropy and giving back!

Best Wishes,
