We are thrilled to announce that our December full board meeting will be live-streamed!
Council Member Brad Lander has selected Brooklyn CB6 to participate in the Live-Streaming Program, through the City Council's Digital Inclusion and Literacy Initiative. Six of our meetings--board meetings, committee meetings or public hearings—will be professionally live-streamed and digitally archived.
The program’s goal is to enable individuals throughout the City to view government in action and, as a result, create a more informed and engaged citizenry. We want to thank Council Member Lander for selecting our Board and hope that this will allow more members of our community and beyond to understand the duties of our Board and will encourage more people to get involved.

Gowanus Combined Sewer Overflow Facility

The Gowanus Canal
On October 26th, our Landmarks/Land Use Committee hosted a Public Hearing on NYC Department of Environmental Protection's Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP) application relevant to site selection and acquisition of property located at 242 Nevins Street, 234 Butler Street, and 270 Nevins Street for a combined sewer overflow control facility, commonly referred to as the Gowanus Canal CSO Facility (ULURP Application # C180065 PCK). The Full Board passed a motion of conditional support on November 8, 2017.

The Gowanus Lowlands Conceptual Rendering
On October 18th, our Parks/Recreation/Environmental Protection Committee met with The Gowanus Canal Conservancy who presented the "Gowanus Lowlands"-- a vision for a network of parks and public spaces centered on the Gowanus Canal and connected to the surrounding watershed.

On October 18th, our Parks/Recreation/Environmental Protection Committee met with the Brooklyn Greenway Initiative who presented the completed conceptual design of the Greenway as Flood Protection in Red Hook. The Full Board passed a motion of support on November 8, 2017.

Nighttime Sanitation Pick Up
|
|
Every winter season starting in November the Department of Sanitation shifts some collection routes to nighttime hours so that there is sufficient manpower available around the clock in the event they are needed for emergency snow removal. Affected sectors are rotated each year to ensure that no individual area is unduly burdened. You may continue to put out your refuse and recycling at the same time.
Some residents will notice a difference in when their collection takes place. Normal daytime collections will resume in April.

The NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) released its
New York City Construction Dashboard, which provides a wealth of interesting information on construction trends throughout the City.The Dashboard can be found on the DOB website and will be updated quarterly.
The Dashboard represents the latest in their ongoing effort to incorporate data analytics in the work they do to identify bad actors, enhance levels of service, and improve transparency.

The NYC Rent Freeze Program, which includes the Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption (SCRIE) Program and the Disability Rent Increase Exemption (DRIE) Program, helps those who are eligible stay in affordable housing by freezing their rent. Under this program, a property tax credit covers the difference between the actual rent amount and what you (the tenant) are responsible for paying at the frozen rate.
Eligible applicants must:
- be head-of-household seniors 62 and older or people with disabilities
- live in rent-regulated apartments
- have an annual household income of $50,000 or less and pay more than 1/3 of their monthly income for rent.

Interactive 80s Photo Map

288 Court Street in the 1980s
80s.nyc is a map-based street view of 1980s New York City, organizing publicly accessible building imagery into an easy-to-browse glimpse of the streetscape 30 years ago.
Over 5 years in the mid-1980s, the City of New York photographed every property in the five boroughs. The photos were used by the Department of Finance to estimate real property values for taxation purposes.
The city-owned imagery is publicly accessible from the Municipal Archives website however the viewing format is limited. The default organizing principle there is the city’s Borough-Block-Lot (BBL) numbering scheme, which alone or together with address searching is useful for retrieving images of individual buildings, but there is no map-based search.
This map was created by Brandon Liu (GIS and programming) and Jeremy Lechtzin ( history; research; data collection).
The 1980s images used on 80s.nyc are available for viewing on the
Municipal Archives website, in addition to many other interesting image sets.

Brooklyn Traditional Slow Jam. Location: Old Stone House. This is acoustic instrumental meet-up focuses on tunes in the following traditions: Irish, English, New England Old Time, French Canadian, American Southern, and maybe even Scandinavian. This group is intended to provide a musical home for folks interested in playing tunes with other musicians, learning to play by ear and overall increasing their own musical skill. It’s fun and welcoming to all ages. $5

Artist Reception at 440 Gallery. 440 Gallery announces the 13th annual Small Works Show 2017. This national, juried exhibition celebrates the innovation of artists who create work on a small scale, in a broad range of media and styles.
