Alcohol and Cancer:
What Do You Want to Know?
Your questions answered in a new member FAQ tool
When it comes to alcohol and cancer,
what do you want to know? What burning questions would you
like to ask? Tell us - we're compiling a helpful FAQ tool for members, and we want to make sure we answer your questions.
For example:
Q: How much alcohol do I need to drink to raise my risk for cancer?
Q: Does the type of alcohol I drink matter?
A: No. The type of alcohol you drink - wine, beer, or liquor -
does not matter when it comes to cancer risk.
Q: But red wine is good for my heart, right?
A: Some past studies have shown a relationship between drinking red wine and decreased heart disease risk. However, researchers believe this relationship most likely has
been overstated. For example, it's possible the connection can be explained by other lifestyle factors, such as increased physical activity. In fact, the
American Heart Association does not recommend drinking red wine or any other form of alcohol to gain these benefits. And heavy drinking can actually damage your heart!

Thanks to all our members who submitted nominations for the
Steering Committee's 2018 Vice Chair position. Your Steering Committee met last month and voted. We are excited to announce our 2018 Vice Chair,
Dr. Melinda Stolley.
Dr. Stolley is the associate director of Cancer Prevention and Control with the Medical College of Wisconsin. As a clinical psychologist, her research interests focus on cancer survivorship and
underserved populations.
"The focus and functionality of the Council is inspiring, and it motivated me to want to become more engaged," Dr. Stolley said. "I am a doer, and thus I'm really excited about the coming year. As someone whose career has focused on cancer disparities, I am particularly passionate about the Council's goal to pursue activities that will impact those most affected."
As we welcome Dr. Stolley, we also say goodbye to
Dr. Patrick Conway, who presided last month over his final session as Steering Committee Chair.
A radiation oncologist with Gundersen Health System, Dr. Conway has been a tremendous leader and cancer control champion during his tenure. He will become Immediate Past Chair in 2018.
Brunner is a longtime WI Cancer Council member and a passionate cancer control champion. We are thrilled to welcome her as Chair, as we embark on the Council's first ever set of
Action Plans.
"I'm excited to build on the success we're seeing in the revitalization of the Cancer Council," Brunner said. "With
more than one hundred dedicated and influential members, our ability to affect health outcomes is powerful. We all work on the
WI Cancer Control Plan in our individual organizations, but I can't wait to see our impact when we begin to build out
action plans together."
Thank you, Dr. Conway, for your dedication! And thank you to Beth Brunner and Melinda Stolley for the guidance you will offer us in 2018!

Celebrating WI's "Healthiest Schools"
Report from the 5th annual Healthier Schools Workshop
On Thursday, November 16, more than 25 school district teams from across Wisconsin gathered in Stevens Point for the fifth annual
Healthier Schools Workshop.
The goal of the workshop is to empower schools to create healthier environments for their students, staff, and community -- as healthy foods and active lifestyles
contribute to cancer prevention.
The WI CCC Program, which staffs and facilitates the WI Cancer Council, began working with schools more than five years ago to support the
cross-cutting issue of policy, systems, and environmental change, particularly in
Priority 2 ("Increase healthy active lifestyles"). Our work in schools is a collaboration with the American Cancer Society and the Department of Public Instruction.
These efforts have been supported by a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Cancer Society.
As our funding in this area comes to an end, we are working with our partners to ensure this great work continues.

Action Plan Webinars
Mark your calendars
Join us Jan. 24 & 25 for a webinar series to review the draft
Action Plans and help shape the final Plans. Each webinar will tackle a different Action Plan topic:
Jan. 24, 10-10:30 am:
Raising awareness of the alcohol-cancer risk connection.
Jan. 24, 11-11:30 am:
Improving HPV vaccine completion rates.
Jan. 25, 10-10:30 am:
Increasing cancer screening rates.
Jan. 25, 11-11:30 am:
Increasing providers' use of standards of care for cancer treatment and symptom management*.
Attend as many webinars as you'd like, based on your interest and expertise. We'll review each
Action Plan and ask for your feedback regarding feasibility, resources, and where you see yourself fitting in.
Registration details will be shared in January's edition of ENGAGE.
* This topic is still under development. Given its breadth, we are exploring ways to narrow it.

Steering Committee Report
A quick recap of our quarterly meeting

 Our focus: to further develop
Action Plans for the WI Cancer Council, an effort to accelerate progress in certain areas of the WI CCC Plan 2015-2020 where WI Cancer Council members can play a lead role in addressing.
Steering Committee members participated in lively discussions to determine major tasks that could be accomplished to address the four Action Plan areas:
- Increase awareness of the connection between alcohol consumption and cancer risk
- Increase HPV vaccine completion
- Increase use of recommended cancer screenings
- Increase providers' use of standards of care for cancer treatment and symptom management
WI CCC Program staff will be creating drafts of each
Action Plan over the next few months, in time for the Action Plan webinar series in January.
Ideas discussed by the Steering Committee include public and provider awareness campaigns, education opportunities for targeted populations, and further data exploration. We look forward to sharing more during the Action Plan webinars next month.
In addition, the Steering Committee celebrated the tenure of outgoing Chair Dr. Patrick Conway, and selected Dr. Melinda Stolley to serve as 2018 Vice Chair.
