Cardinal Great

David Duplantis '82 was inducted into the Cardinal Greats after the All Saints Day Mass on November 1.  Fellow inductees Jeff Donnes '73 and Sandra Diez Trosclair '79 were inducted in October and also recognized at the presentation.

While at E. D. White, Duplantis competed in football, baseball and basketball. In football he was a three-year letterman, playing as a two-way starter full back and defensive end on the 1981 state runner-up football team. He garnered All-District honors in both his junior and senior years and was also selected as one of the team captains his senior year. For the Cardinal basketball team, he played a guard/forward position and was a two-year letterman. On the baseball diamond, Duplantis played 2nd base and lettered all three years.  He was also selected for All-District honors in both his junior and senior years for baseball.

He is pictured above with President Tim Robichaux and Athletic Director Mary Cavell.

Student Gets Special Gift

Sports writer for the local paper Chris Singleton presented student Cameron Steib with a gift in class on November 3. Singleton said that the gift was from a reader of the newspaper who was inspired after watching a video of Steib that went viral of his scoring the first touchdown in E. D. White's scrimmage against Thibodaux earlier this school year. The gift was a small action figure replica of Steib, who wears the team's no. 1 jersey.

Veterans Day Assembly

The E. D. White Catholic Veterans Day Assembly was held November 6 in the main gym. The program began with the presentation of colors, tributes to deceased veterans, introduction of veterans, special musical tributes by the CARES students and E. D. White Choir, and a salute to armed forces with a medley of their branch hymns.

Veterans and their guests were invited to a reception in the student union following the assembly. Pictured above are Mr. and Mrs. Charles "Bubba" Braud who are faithful attendees of the special event.

Veteran attendee Dean Matherne is pictured with Senior Julianne Hull. Matherene stated, "Ten years ago I received this lovely Christmas card while serving in Iraq. Today at E. D. White's Veterans Day Ceremony, I got to meet the lovely young lady who sent it to me. So yes, those letters to 'Any Soldier' do make a difference."

Fall Sports Recap

The 2017 Volleyball season started in the summer with workouts and practices. In July the team traveled to Tallahassee, FL for team camp at Florida State University.  Varsity and JV both had a great showing.

Volleyball started the regular season with a team retreat and first ever Father/Daughter jersey ceremony that set the tone for the rest of the season.

This year's schedule was another tough one with the girls playing some of the top teams in the state, and the Cardinals competed well with them. "We were a young team this year with only one senior, seven juniors, seven sophomores, and five freshmen,"said Coach Sarah Johnson.

The team finished the regular season as District Runners-up. The team had a bye the first round of playoffs and defeated a district foe, Morgan City in the regional round. They returned to the state tournament and fell short to the state champions in the quarterfinal round.

The Lady Cardinals Cross Country team battled injuries throughout the season, but they continued to fight and get strong as the season progressed. The team was led by three seniors: Annie Alexander, Claire Labat and Sydney Stein.   The team captured the Lafourche Parish Championship, District 7-4A runners-up and captured the Class 4A State runners-up trophy at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches on November 14.

The boys team had another great season that was led by two seniors: Race Bourgeois and Zachary Robichaux. The Cardinals won several meets during the regular season and had top ten finishes at four Highland Park meets. The Cardinals had a great championship phase as they captured the Lafourche Parish Championship, were the District 7-4A Championship and finished as Class 4A State Runners-up.

Football opened up the regular season with wins over Central Lafourche and Erath. In week three, the Cardinals lost a triple overtime thriller to 3A state quarterfinalist St. James. After the loss to St. James, the team hit its stride and went on a seven game winning streak highlighted by wins over: Assumption, South Lafourche, and Vandebilt Catholic. With a win over Ellender in week nine, EDW clinched a share of the district 7-4A championship and then a victory over rival Vandebilt the next week earned the Cardinals the district championship. The team finished with a 6-0 district record and a 9-1 overall regular season. "The 2017 team had tremendous leadership and character. This team had a unique way of always making it about we and us, not me and mine," said Head Coach Chris Bergeron.

The Cardinal swim teams enjoyed another successful swim season. Several new team records were set throughout the season, and two new state records were achieved during the state swim meet on November 16.  Both teams captured the titles of Greater New Orleans East District Champion, Greater New Orleans Metro Co-ed Champions and Division III Louisiana State Champions.

Court of Dreams

The EDW basketball team and the New Orleans Pelicans teamed up on November 20 to host Court of Dreams.  The EDW boys basketball team played Pascagoula at the Pelicans practice facility and then attended the Pelicans vs. Oklahoma City Thunder game that evening in the Smoothie King Center. The event was sponsored by One Shining Moment Foundation, and all ticket sales were donated to Celeste and Lauren Fontz.

Teacher Highlight

Monique Aucoin, a 1999 graduate of New Iberia Senior High, is in her 14th year of teaching and her second year at E. D. White. Aucoin currently teaches French I, II, and III as well as a 10th grade study skills class.

She received her B.A. in French from LSU in 2002 and a Master's in Education from LSU in 2003.

While attending LSU, Aucoin had the opportunity to study at the Université de Liège in Belgium and the Université de Sainte-Anne in Church Point, Nova Scotia. Her unique experiences traveling and studying abroad gave her a deeper appreciation of her Cajun culture and dialect and affirmed that she wanted to pursue a career that allowed her to share her passion for language learning and cultural preservation with the next generation.

Before arriving at E.D. White, Aucoin taught at Redemptorist High School in Baton Rouge and Thibodaux High followed by nine years at South Lafourche High. She said, "When I received word that a position at E.D. White had become available, I embraced the opportunity to continue my teaching ministry in a God-centered environment."

Aucoin is grateful to work in a profession that allows her to share her joie de vivre with others. "Teaching is more than a career; it's a calling to inspire students and colleagues and challenge them to be the best people they can be. One of the most rewarding parts of the profession is witnessing and celebrating those moments of success that have been achieved in the midst of adversity. Perseverance is key," she stated. Lâche pas la patate.
