ArtsOC Announces 2018 Creative Edge Speaker:
ROBERT DUKE

Arts Orange County has been bringing renowned thought-leaders on creativity and innovation to inspire our own work as artists, educators, and leaders each year since 2010. Presented in collaboration with Orange County Department of Education and 4th District PTA, the ninth speaker in this series has just been announced: Robert Duke, one of the world's foremost experts on the human learning process.
A former studio musician and public school music teacher, Dr. Duke has lectured on "Why Students Don't Learn What We Think We Teach" and "Music Learning Through Multiple Lenses." (His Creative Edge topic will be announced soon.) He holds multiple distinctions at the University of Texas at Austin: the Marlene and Morton Meyerson Centennial Professor and Head of Music and Human Learning, University of Texas System Distinguished Teaching Professor, Elizabeth Shatto Massey Distinguished Fellow in Teacher Education, and Director of the Center for Music Learning, as well as a clinical professor in UT's Dell Medical School. Dr. Duke is also director of the psychology of learning program at the Colburn Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles. His research on human learning and behavior spans multiple disciplines, including motor skill learning, cognitive psychology, and neuroscience.
The lecture will take place on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, 10 AM at the Irvine Barclay Theatre. Admission is free, and reservations will be accepted beginning approximately one month prior to the event.

City of Brea's Public Art Collection Grows by Nine
|
City of Brea's Art in Public Places (APP) program--at 178 works, Orange County's largest municipal collection of public art--continues to grow with the recent addition of nine works by Marlo Bartels in the Blackstone community, a Shea Homes development there. Brea's APP began in 1975 as one of the first collections of public art in the state. The APP program requires developments valued at $1.5 million or more to install art that is worth at least 1 percent of the project's total value. Read more in this Voice of OC article.
Brea residents Terry Sullivan and Dena Sommer made it their goal to photograph each piece of art in the APP program. The couple now runs their own Brea's Art in Public Places website, where they catalogue the collection with photographs, locations, and the various artists' names. TYLER STALLINGS is returning to Orange County. He will become Director of the Orange Coast College Doyle Arts Pavilion on January 8, leaving his current position as Artistic Director at Culver Center of the Arts & Director at Sweeney Art Gallery, both at University of California, Riverside. Stallings distinguished himself early in his career with posts in Orange County: he was Director of Programs at Huntington Beach Art Center and then chief curator at Laguna Art Museum. He and his wife, artist Naida Osline, will return to the home they own in Huntington Beach.

The Dragon Kim Fellowships support motivated high school students to create and manage a summer project to impact their community.
The Foundation will choose 10-15 students/projects for the 2018 Fellowship Program. Once chosen, in the Spring, these Dragon Fellows will go through two weekends of leadership training. They will also be paired up with professional mentors with experience in their project area to offer regular help and support
In the summer, each Dragon Fellow will launch and pursue his/her project, supported by a grant of up to $5,000
Dragon Kim was a student at Orange County School of the Arts and he passed away in a tragic camping accident a few years ago. In the wake of tragedy, Dragon's parents created a foundation to honor his memory and his legacy .
