The Skokie Home Scoop  - November 17, 2017

Dear Skokie Families,
This week at The Skokie School would be a hard one to top!  We were visited by three change-makers, all spreading messages aligned with the learning opportunities we work hard to provide our students with.  We began the week with a visit from Dr. Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi.  In order to prepare for his visit, our Assistant Principal, Ms. Woodring, spent time reading and discussing excerpts from one of his books, The Gift of Anger, with our students.  Skokie and Washburne students came together in our auditorium and benefited from hearing his message, promoting the channeling of the energy behind anger toward the betterment of society.  He explained that anger is a normal and healthy emotion, but it is what is done with the motivation behind that emotion that matters most.  We owe a great big thank you to Ms. Joanna Amaral, fourth grade teacher from Hubbard Woods, for inviting Dr. Gandhi to speak to our students this week.
On Tuesday, State Representative Robyn Gabel, visited our school as a part of a national invitation to legislators to shadow a principal.  Representative Gabel spoke with students in Mr. Rowe and Ms. Duthie's classrooms and enjoyed a visit to our MakerSpace to speak with students about how they participate in design thinking at Skokie.

(Two of our Skokie Makers show Rep. Gabel a trick to threading a needle)
Finally, we closed the week on Thursday afternoon with a Family Action Network sponsored event, in which Dr. Jo Boaler of Stanford University spoke with the audience about building confidence and accessibility in Mathematics and the brain science behind learning new concepts as well as making mistakes.

Stay warm over this final chilly weekend before we head into the Thanksgiving week.  Enjoy the time together with your family.

Most Sincerely,

Kelly Tess

We'll discuss what it means to have rigorous standards for listening and communicating in math, how exposure to multiple approaches supports successful students to be sense-makers with deep understanding who never hit that "math wall," and how math-intensive careers require students to be able to problem-solve collaboratively and support their math skills with strong interpersonal skills. Future Ready D36
As is always our goal in Winnetka, keeping our students at the center of all that we do is vital to the Future Ready D36 process. The Future Ready D36 Core Team has toured several schools in and around the North Shore as part of their research on how facilities and learning environments best meet the needs of students today and prepares them for the future. Here is a glimpse into some of the spaces toured so far (including New Trier High School, Sunset Ridge, North Shore Country Day School, and Lane Tech College Prep).
