A SHABBAT MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor has an undergraduate Jewish population approximating 16%.  With such large Jewish numbers, one might imagine that it is an unlikely place to have institutional anti-Semitic action.  Sadly, if you thought this, you would be wrong.

On Wednesday, November 15, 2017 The University of Michigan's Central Student Government (CSG) voted to approve a resolution calling on the University to divest from several companies that operate in Israel.  The vote, held utilizing an improper secret ballot, was 23 in favor, 17 against, and 5 abstentions.  If  an anti-Israel/anti-Semitic resolution can be passed on a campus with a large and active Jewish population, it can happen anywhere.

This highly disturbing action highlights the need to proactively and vigilantly fight anti-Semitism in all its forms.  For those who are not familiar with the term "BDS", it stands for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions.  The movement seeks to force colleges, municipalities, and governments to cease any connection to companies doing business with or in Israel.  The stated purpose of the BDS movement is to punish Israel for alleged violations of international law due to Israel's treatment of the Palestinian people.

While the BDS movement and its stated goal are unjust and insincere, its true goal is the destruction of the state of Israel. It is well-funded with an extensive propaganda network.  I would like to let you know of an important organization that is attempting to battle the BDS movement in order to prevent more harmful actions like those that took place at the University of Michigan.

StandWithUs serves a crucial educational and grassroots role on high school and college campuses.  As the trend of anti-Israel hatred rapidly spreads and the BDS movement is on the rise, StandWith Us provides the tools needed to fight the negative bias that much of the world is only too happy to hear.

Shabbat Shalom - Rabbi Michael S. Jay

TRAVEL TO ISRAEL WITH THE JCC OF LBI

The JCC trip to Israel will take place October 7-18, 2018. The itinerary will take us from Tel Aviv to the Golan Heights, to a winery, to the Kineret, to a Kibbutz, to Sefad, to Jerusalem, to the Dead Sea, to Massada, to many museums, and more. At Massada we will be sharing in a bar mitzvah of one of our fellow travelers. What joy!

From the Rabbi -

Folks:
I am attaching a revised itinerary.  You will note that on free evenings we will be provided with information on concerts or cultural events in the places where we will be.  It is too early now to know what will be happening, but the tour company (ITC) will provide information once it is known.

The hotel difference of 300 dollars per person may or may not be significant to you.  Check the websites of the hotels for an idea of the differences.  The tour company tells us that the hotels are all very nice. Rooms may be smaller and there may be less amenities.  Breakfast is provided at each hotel, but may be more elaborate at the higher priced hotels.

The tour is officially flying El Al; however, if you want to fly United, I believe that ITC can make arrangements.

The trip will be meaningful and fun!

L'Shalom - Rabbi
