PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:
by Robert P. Granacher, Jr., M.D., MBA
|
It is time for me to transfer the LMS President's gavel to Dr. Tuyen T. Tran, our incoming President for the 2018 calendar year. As I transfer leadership, I want to review our Strategic Plan of 2017 - 2019, which began with my presidency. This newsletter will highlight some of the new initiatives that occurred in the 2017 calendar year as part of the current Strategic Plan.
As many of you recall, the Lexington Medical Society has revamped its mission statement and vision statement. Our vision is currently: "For passion in the practice of medicine. The Lexington Medical Society aims to ignite, sustain, and rekindle the passion for the practice of medicine." This vision statement is our trajectory currently, and one of the main strategies within that trajectory of this vision is to connect our past with our future as we progress along the way. This vision led LMS to focus on supporting our medical students and residents (the LMS future) at the University of Kentucky, College of Medicine. Here is a review of our major 2017 actions.

The Lexington Medical Society is proud to announce the launching a completely new, modern, professionally-designed website and a new brand logo. This effort was started early this year in an effort in make our website more mobile friendly and make our logo more modern and representative of our Society. We have worked with Makespace.com, a website design company, to assist us in this effort. Makespace started their design process by studying us in order to tailor our website and logo to our culture and vision.

LMS has concluded its first year of its second strategic plan which is focused from 2017 to 2019. The first strategic plan, 2014 to 2016, caused our membership to rebound from a twelve year decline by being "physician centric" in its approach. The membership, which bottomed out at 499 in 2014, increased to 580 in 2016. The previous strategic plan modernized much of our business practices, streamlined our society governance, and created some innovative programs. The most notable innovation was the launching of the Physician Wellness Program in 2016. This positive trend continues with membership increasing to 598 in 2017. Dr. Robert Granacher, as the President-Elect in 2016, led a strategic planning committee to develop the current plan (figure 1). The planning committee, understanding that the active physicians exhibiting signs of burnout was well over 55% or higher, developed a positive vision that emphasizes the passion for the practice of medicine. Serving as a physician is a noble profession that requires a great deal of personal sacrifice starting from trying to make the grade in school to enter the profession till retirement. Therefore, this vision is what drives the energy and resources of the Lexington Medical Society in service to our members. The new strategic plan retained successful strategies from the first strategic plan and launched a few more. Here is an assessment of our current strategic plan.

Kentucky Blood Center Update
|
The blood on the shelf is what is needed in an emergency, and the Kentucky Blood Center continually shares that message with donors. It often takes an actual emergency, however, to get people to roll up their sleeves.
That was apparent this year during the devastating hurricanes and Las Vegas mass shooting. Kentuckians came to the blood drives and donor centers wanting to help those in need in Texas, Miami and Las Vegas. Kentucky Blood Center (KBC) definitely saw an uptick in donations.

KMA Membership Allows Physicians to Overcome Challenges Together
|
I'd like to begin my message by stating what an honor it is to serve as your President.
The Kentucky Medical Association has been a pillar of strength to Kentucky physicians. It has led us through some very trying times. Without the KMA we could very easily be saddled with a provider-tax and more mandated CME than you could imagine. The KMA has been incredibly effective in abolishing and preventing these.
