A Few Scattered Seeds...                              November 16 , 2017
Our New Priest!

Dear Friends in Christ,

Today (Thursday) we welcome our new Associate Rector, the Rev. Kate Byrd!  If you missed an introductory article from a few months ago, check it out here.  She will be the celebrant at both services this Sunday, and we'll have a little coffee-hour welcome after the 9:30 a.m. service.   She can now be reached at [email protected].

Kate and her husband, Drew, will be attending the "Deck the Great Hall" event  on Saturday night. As you may have seen in the most incredible   church
ever produced, she has agreed to open her home for a dinner next year to the group who puts together the highest bid.   So break open your piggy banks, sell all your Bitcoin, re-finance your home: all proceeds from the auction go to a good cause.  If our new furniture in the Great Hall lasts as long this time as it did last time, parishioners in the year 2077 will be thanking you for your generosity!

All Blessings,
Seth+

 Building Committee Update
Building Project Moves Closer to the Goal Line

We're getting there!  As many people saw and heard last Sunday, the Building Project design is moving forward.  The floor plans, building materials and mechanical systems are in the final design stage.  We will seek sub-contractor bids in December, with the goal of taking a final contract proposal to the Vestry in early February.  Construction is slated to begin on April 2, 2018, with completion in October.  If all goes well, we will gather for a joyous dedication in November 2018, just a year from now.

As some already know, the "rectory" was recently sold, with a net contribution to the Good Shepherd fund of just over $218,000.  Enormous thanks to Rick Donner and Mary Jones, who handled both the sale and the closing, at a significant savings to the church.

This additional contribution to the Good Shepherd fund puts our pledge total at $2,487,000!  Approximately $1.3 million has been paid to date.  This extraordinary generosity puts the project in a comfortable, but not "home free" position.  In the next three months, the Building Committee will continue to refine the designs and costs, and make a final recommendation regarding what is in, what is out, what is on the bubble, and what, if any amount, the church should borrow in order to do the  project in the best way possible.

How can you help?  In this time of a strong stock market, you may wish to pay your pledge on an advanced time schedule.  That would be fantastic!  If you have not pledged, or if you would like to make an additional pledge, you're most welcome to do so.  You may just do it, as Nike would say.  Or you may contact Meredie Scrivner or Fr. Seth Dietrich.

Much has happened in the last year.  May 2018 brings our project to a wonderful completion!

Please see below for two links of interest.  The first is to some still photos of the design.  The second is a link to the Adult Education presentation from November 12, which runs about an hour of play time.  Many thanks to Denny Jones, our incredibly faithful cinematographer.

Green Team
Save a Tree

That is precisely what my students are about to do - save a tree.  They are responsible for collecting all the waste paper from their classrooms on a weekly basis and weighing it.  Surprisingly enough, they will only have to collect 117 pounds of paper to save a tree along with 20 gallons of oil, 200 kilowatts of energy, and 400 gallons of water.  Wow, that's a lot considering 177 pounds of paper is equal to 16 reams of paper.  For my students, recycling is a new concept.  Their lives are so complex and overwhelming, that recycling
may be the last thing on their radar.  Stay tuned and
watch for the tree we grow.
