Coaches Corner

All of the Leigh soccer teams have new coaches at the helm this year.

T
he new Varsity boys' soccer coach is Thomas Murdock. Coach Murdock was born and raised in San Jose and attended the local schools of Carlton Elementary, Union Middle, and Leigh High School. During his time at Leigh, he played four years on the Varsity soccer team before graduating and continuing his playing career at West Valley Community College. When his playing career was cut short, he took on an assistant coaching role at West Valley. Since graduating from San Jose State University, Coach Murdock has committed his time to coaching at the youth level throughout the South Bay.

T
he new Varsity girls' soccer coach is Nick Hatzke. Coach Hatzke grew up playing youth soccer for Almaden. He attended Bellarmine College Prep and received a scholarship to play soccer at the University of California, Berkeley. He went on to play two years in the MLS for the Houston Dynamo which won an MLS cup in 2008. Since then, Coach Hatzke has been coaching youth soccer for the Alpine Strikers, Almaden FC, and Los Gatos United. Nick was also a technical advisor for the men's soccer team at Santa Clara University for two seasons. He has been coaching at Los Gatos United for three years and is now the Director of Coaching on the competitive side.

The new JV boys' soccer coach is Mario Farfan. Coach Mario has been coaching soccer at Leigh for six years, most recently as the Varsity boys' coach which won the BVAL-Mount Hamilton League title in 2015-16. Coach Mario came to the US from Peru when he was in grade school and grew up in Walnut Creek. He comes from a family of Peruvian National level soccer players who inspired him to play and helped him develop his skills. While in the US Marine Corp, Coach Mario played with both the All Marine Team as well as the All Armed Forces Team. Following his military career, he played professionally for the USISL Reno Rattlers and the Northern Nevada Aces professional club and the Carson City Wonders professional development league. After his professional career, Coach Mario played competitively for premier leagues in the Bay Area. While playing professionally, he starting coaching kids through Mike Simon's Team Challenge Soccer Camps. Coach Mario went on to start his own company, Futbol Habitat, to fulfill his passion of teaching kids of all ages to play soccer. His slogan is "Learn - Apply - Perfect".

The new JV girls' soccer coach is Mit Guraydin. Coach Guraydin started his coaching career 18 years ago and is currently the coach for both the boys and the girls at Rolling Hills Middle School. He is a soccer parent - raising two soccer players who played both club soccer and at Westmont High School. His daughter Anna went on to play soccer at Cal State Monterey Bay and she will be assisting him coaching at Leigh. He is a soccer player himself, retiring from Club Soccer just three years ago, and credits learning much of what he knows about soccer from Craig Waibel who played for the San Jose Earthquakes before their move to Houston. Coach Guraydin says "Our team will have fun together, respect each other and the competition, continue to keep good grades, become better soccer players, and be in the best shape of their lives by the time the season is over."
