Season's Greetings, AIA Kentucky family! We are in the homestretch of a fantastic year and, at an all-time membership high of 624, we sit poised for more good things to come in 2018!
In January, we will launch another session of Sights on Success - the ARE Prep program that assists Kentucky's emerging professionals in their pursuit of licensure. We also look forward to working with some new partners to deliver interesting and relevant educational programs and we will continue making beneficial enhancements to our annual conference and awards programs.
As we anticipate all of this, we are also looking back on a very successful 2017 and we are extremely thankful for the members, allied members and dedicated volunteers who make this possible. We hope that each of you will enjoy some well-deserved downtime with family and loved ones over the holidays and we look forward to working with you in the new year!

A Message from Your President
As 2017 comes to a close, we look back on a successful year for AIA Kentucky with our membership at an all-time high. As of November 15, we recorded 624 members. This is only possible with the commitment of you, the members of the AIA. You value the importance of the AIA and I hope we were able to deliver the services you have come to expect. Executive Vice President, Janet Pike, Hon. AIA, and Member Outreach Coordinator, Kelly Ives, AIA are the strength behind the association, along with each of you. Our members have answered our call to serve on committees and represent AIA Kentucky at programs and events throughout the year - including AIA KY Legislative Day, Housing, Buildings & Construction Advisory Committee, Building Code Committee, AIA Awards Programs, QBS Coalition Committee along with KSPE/ACEC - KY, and AIA KY's Committee on Architecture for Education (CAE) to name a few.
I would also like to congratulate Jeff Stivers, AIA on his election to serve on the
national

. We wish Jeff all the best
as he represents Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana members at the national level.
Challenges remain ahead with state tax reform and its impact on the profession and we maintain a watchful eye as things progress. Many thanks to Greg Brotzge for guiding the association through the many legislative challenges. We hope our CE programs and seminars have met your expectations and look forward to presenting a promising lineup of education for 2018. I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our Executive Committee and the AIA Kentucky Board for their support and guidance. Please join me in welcoming President-elect John Robertson, AIA with open arms and offer him the support you provided me.
Lastly, I hope you will join us on December 19, 2017 for our holiday gathering at Holly Hill Inn. Our special guests will be the newly licensed Architects in Kentucky. We want to take this moment to recognize this group of individuals on a major accomplishment and welcome them to the AIA. I hope you will find time to relax during the holidays and spend time with loved ones.

Solar Training for Design Professionals
A new accredited course specifically designed for architects and engineers debuts in Versailles, KY on
January 31st
, in cooperation with AIA Kentucky and Bluegrass ASHRAE.
The training includes design considerations for incorporating solar photovoltaics (PV) into buildings, how to speak with clients about the benefits of solar PV, where to find information on financial incentives, and much more.
The one-day training was developed by the Building Codes Assistance Project (BCAP), the Center for Sustainable Energy (CSE), and national solar energy experts, in partnership with American Institute of Architects (AIA) and ASHRAE. The cost of the training includes lunch and is reduced due to sponsorship by the U.S Department of Energy's SunShot Initiative: regular price is $150; AIA and ASHRAE members pay just $125; NGOs, veterans - $75; and students $15.

AIA KY Members / Allied Members Appointed to High-Performance Buildings Advisory Committee
On November 2, Gov. Matt Bevin appointed David Andrew Edward, Sherry Diann Redmon, Randy Edward Vanhook, Michael William Jacobs, AIA, Cheryl Creech Kersey, AIA, Christopher Robert Tyler and Robert Finley Messick to the High-Performance Buildings Advisory Committee.
- David Andrew Edward, of La Grange, is a professor and professional environmental engineer. He will represent the Kentucky Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council and serve for a term expiring Aug. 22, 2018.
- Sherry Diann Redmon, of Russell Springs, is co-owner and operator of Red-Sun Homes, Inc. She will represent the Kentucky Manufactured Housing Institute and serve for a term expiring Aug. 22, 2018.
- Randy Edward Vanhook, of Somerset, is a project manager for Green Mechanical Construction, Inc. He will represent the Associated General Contractors of Kentucky and serve for a term expiring Aug. 22, 2018.
- Michael William Jacobs, AIA, of Lexington, is an architect. He will represent the design and construction industry involved in public works contracting and serve for a term expiring Aug. 22, 2018.
- Cheryl Creech Kersey, AIA, of Louisville, is an architect. She will represent the Kentucky Society of the American Institute of Architects and serve for a term expiring Aug. 22, 2018.
- Christopher Robert Tyler, of Lexington, is CEO of Thermal Equipment Sales. He will represent the American Society of the Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers and serve for a term expiring Aug. 22, 2018.
- Robert Finley Messick, of Frankfort, is executive director of the Kentucky Concrete Association. He will represent the Kentucky Ready Mixed Concrete Association and serve for a term expiring Aug. 22, 2018.
The High-Performance Buildings Advisory Committee is charged with establishing the criteria for the high-performance building standards and the benchmarks by which those standards will be measured. The Committee researches cost-effective, energy-saving, recycled and renewable energy sources, and other green methods of construction for state and local high-performance building design, construction, maintenance and operation.

Building Operator Certification Program
The Kentucky Pollution Prevention Center (KPPC), at the University of Louisville, with funding provided by the Kentucky Department for Energy Development and Independence (DEDI), in partnership with the Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (MEEA), is initiating a Building Operator Certification (BOC) program in Kentucky. Humanitarian Studio Seeks Support for Travels
Earlier this year, Associate Dean of Students, Bruce Swetnam, led a group of students from the School of Architecture to Port Au Prince, Haiti where they began collecting information and making plans for a renovation and expansion of the Chez Moi orphanage. The group is now seeking donations to fund a return trip to Port Au Prince in order to further the Chez Moi project. Click here to learn more and support this initiative.

EP/NCARB News
Examination administrations are exceeding an already optimistic forecast for FY 2018. Of particular interest is the growing participation in the new ARE 5.0 as ARE 4.0 approaches retirement.
With its focus on the six phases of practice and simulation of workplace context, the new exam is getting very positive reviews and appears to be incentivizing faster progress through the multiple divisions. While it will be some time before sufficient data exists to truly spot trends, the early results are very encouraging. Moving candidates through the experience and examination path at a faster pace, without sacrificing rigor, reinforces the goal of facilitating licensure.

The Last Word
One of our primary roles here at AIA Kentucky is advocacy on issues affecting architects, architectural practice, and the communities you serve through your work. The past few weeks have been busy:
- Members and staff met last week with officials in the Department of Housing Buildings and Construction regarding building code regulations that will be submitted to the Legislative Research Commission for review in January. We have urged the Department to maintain the 2012 IECC for commercial projects, after recommendations had been made to roll back to the 2009 IECC. We're encouraged that adoption of the 2015 IBC and IRC with amendments appears to be moving forward, which includes input provided by AIA Kentucky's code review committee and other industry groups.
- AIA Kentucky is participating in a coalition with other organizations offering professional services, in anticipation of possible inclusion of taxes on professional services in Kentucky tax reform efforts expected in 2018. The coalition is researching professional service tax experiences in other states to identifying how we can contribute to the conversation about this and other tax reform approaches that would affect our firms.
- We've been working closely with the AIA national advocacy team to bring you up to date information about the federal tax reform proposals making their way through the U.S. Congress. I hope you've taken the time to review and act upon the action alerts we've sent out. Our efforts to maintain the Historic Tax Credit (along with those of the National Trust and other preservation groups) had an impact in the Senate bill approved in the early hours of Saturday morning. That version of tax reform eliminates the 10 percent credit for rehabilitation of structures that aren't historic. The 20 percent credit for historic structures would be retained but spread over five years. The bill also eliminates any credit for buildings in operation before 1936 that are not on the National Register of Historic Places. The Senate bill is an improvement over the U.S. House of Representative version of the bill, in the eyes of preservationists, but still falls short of the existing tax credit benefits. The House-approved bill cuts the historic tax credit from the federal tax code altogether.
- Unfortunately, both bills for some reason continue to exclude architects and other small business service professions by name from lower tax rates on pass-through income. AIA continues to advocate to preserve tax policies that support and strengthen small businesses and insure fairness for professional service firms. We will keep the pressure on Kentucky's House and Senate members during conference committee reconciliation of the two bills.
As the year comes to a close, my thanks go out to 2017 President Randall Vaughn, AIA. Randall's knowledge, insight and positivity have been evident as we've faced many opportunities and challenges, and I so appreciate both his approach to leadership and his friendship as we've worked together this year to make AIA a valued resource to you. I also offer my thanks to all our members, for your financial support through your dues AND your engagement through participation in our initiatives, including advocacy, honor awards, educational programming and Sights on Success, to name a few.
And, finally, I look forward to working with 2018 President John Robertson, AIA, and I know you will join me in offering him your support as he takes the helm.
