Market News

CBRE's 2017 Tech-30 report showed Pittsburgh as the 3rd fastest-growing city for tech employment in the U.S. CBRE's research of the 30 top tech markets found Pittsburgh had 31.4% job growth in the tech sector in 2015-2016, trailing only Charlotte, NC (31.5%) and San Francisco (39.4%). Pittsburgh was ranked second behind Montreal for "tech momentum" - the rate of growth for the most recent two-year period compared to the previous one. An interesting note: Pittsburgh was not in the top ten markets for tech-driven occupancy, suggesting that the job growth may just beginning to impact space demand.  View the Tech-30 report at CBRE Research website.

Pennsylvania Builders Exchange honored Joe Burchick with the Tink Bryan Memorial award for the devotion of his time to the construction industry. Burchick is flanked by Bryan's son David (left) and grandson Josh.

Project News

Given the recent announcements by UPMC and Allegheny Health Network, it's no surprise that healthcare projects are the feature in a slow bidding market. Rycon Construction was awarded the 60,000 sq. ft., $20 million AHN cancer center at the Forbes Regional Hospital in Monroeville. PJ Dick was selected to build a smaller facility, a 30,000 sq. ft. cancer center, at the St. Vincent campus in Erie. AHN has also issued the RFP for its new $200 million+ hospital in Pine Township, adjacent to the Wexford Wellness Pavilion. Proposing on that project are Mascaro, Massaro/Gilbane, PJ Dick, Turner, Whiting-Turner and Yates. WVUH awarded a contract to Mosites Construction for the $6 million fitout of the 8th floor at the Ruby Hospital Tower.

In non-hospital news, CMU is taking proposals from Jendoco, Landau, Mascaro, PJ Dick and Rycon on renovations to Posner Hall and Warner Hall. The projects combined will be roughly $22 million. Rycon broke ground on the first phase of the 319-unit, $60 million Station Square Apartments being developed by Trammel Crow. Bids will be taken from A. Martini & Co., Landau, Nello, Volpatt and Waller Construction on a renovation of First Presbyterian Church in Washington, PA.
