Message from the executive director - The stars are aligned

As we prepare to wrap up 2017 and welcome 2018, on behalf of the Ohio State Global One Health initiative (GOHi) family, I would like to thank all our partners for their commitment to GOHi and partnering with us to fulfill our mission and vision.
GOHi has a bold vision to build capable professionals and institutional systems that support and advance a healthy and enduring global community. To achieve its vision, members of the GOHi family have worked diligently over the past year with key local, regional and international stakeholders and strategic partners. We marked a one year journey with many wonderful milestones.
To highlight few:
- GOHi strengthened its office team by recruiting highly-talented and multi-disciplinary staff, executive co-leadership and renowned external advisory board members;
- GOHi opened its first regional office in sub-Saharan Africa in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia revitalizing its commitment. In addition, GOHi initiated and renewed nine memoranda of agreements with eastern Africa and Asian academic and research institutes;
- GOHi strengthened collaborative partnerships in capacity building and research training to advance priority global issues by successfully holding the sixth annual One Health Summer Institute; progressing the CDC Global Health Security project and vaccinating over 8,000 dogs in Ethiopia, organizing and participating in the 2017 Global Innovation initiative workshop in Brazil with 125 other scientists to help build One Health in NE Brazil; joining the USAID prevention of TB project and enrolling over 800 participants in the clinical study, further work in multiple areas of Global Infectious Diseases and Genomics;
- GOHi co-led a successful fourth bi-annual global knowledge-sharing congress, ICOPHAI.
Indeed, we feel the stars are aligned. At the same time, the GOHi team recognizes that the stakes are so high and the journey is very long. Our team is committed to doing what is necessary and make a lasting global impact. We wish each and every one of you and your family a blessed holiday season filled with peace and good health. GOHi very much looks forward to working with you all in the coming year and beyond.

GOHi recognized as an NGO in Ethiopia
|
The Global One Health initiative officially celebrated the opening of its regional office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and its registration as a non-governmental organization with a workshop at the United Nations Conference Center (UNCC) followed by a ribbon cutting ceremony in the regional office, on November 11. Over 80 participants attended the workshop including the Bruce McPheron, executive vice president and provost, Geoff Chatas, chief financial officer (CFO) at Ohio State, the Minister of Livestock and Fisheries, Minister of Science and Technology, and numerous other Ohio State and Ethiopian faculty from diverse areas of focus.
The workshop featured the breadth and impact of GOHi's ongoing work and the upcoming planned activities in the region. It also hosted the signing of international Memorandum of Agreements with eight partner institutions: Addis Ababa University (AAU), Gondar University (UoG), Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI), National Animal Health Diagnostic & Investigation Center (NAHDIC), University of Nairobi (UoN), Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) and Sokoine University of Agriculture (Tanzania).
After the workshop, participants attended the official ribbon cutting and coffee ceremony in the Addis Ababa office. McPheron and Her Excellency Dr. Misrak Mekonnen, Her Excellency the Minister of Livestock and Fisheries presided over the ceremony. In addition, Thomas Mack, a 1961 graduate of Ohio State's College of Veterinary Medicine and GOHi donor attended all festivities. Mack was recognized by GOHi's Executive Director Wondwossen Gebreyes, and along with McPheron, Chatas and Gifty Ako-Adounvo, assistant vice provost for global strategies and international affairs, for their ongoing support of GOHi's work.

ICOPHAI Congress is a success in Doha, Qatar
|
The 4th International Congress on Pathogens at the Human-Animal Interface (ICOPHAI) was held in Doha, Qatar from November 7 - 9 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel. Nearly 200 participants attended from more than 30 countries. This year's congress, "Environmental Challenges and Impact on Global Health," experienced a 30% increase in abstract submissions over previous years.
Presentations ranged from antimicrobial resistance and biosecurity to vaccine development and innovative communication approaches. Watch a

Distinguished alumni award for advancing global health
|
GOHi Executive Director Wondwossen Gebreyes was honored in November as a distinguished alumnus by North Carolina State University (NC State). NC State recognized Gebreyes as a leading voice and researcher in the area of One Health. Through his leadership Ohio State has formed partnerships between hundreds of students, faculty and staff and international organizations, working in diverse fields such as cancer research, food safety and infectious disease. Kathryn Meurs, NC State's associate dean for veterinary research and graduate students, nominated Gebreyes for the alumni award.
"I really watch for grad students who demonstrate leadership and will have a profound impact on animal and human health," said Meurs. "Dr. Gebreyes is truly leading the way to improve global health."
Gebreyes received the award at the banquet dinner on November 4 in Raleigh, NC.

On behalf of the Global One health initiative (GOHi), faculty from the College of Public Health and the College of Veterinary Medicine led an initiative to establish a Graduate Certificate in Global One Health. The request was approved unanimously by each college's graduate council, and it received the final approval by the Ohio State's Council for Academic Affairs (CAA).
This certificate program will provide Ohio State graduate and professional students from any area of focus an opportunity to pursue an interdisciplinary education and training focused on addressing global health issues at the interface of human health, animal health and the environment using an integrated One Health approach.
Candidates will be vetted by a graduate steering committee prior to admission. To be granted with the certificate, each admitted student will need to fulfill nine credit hours of required core courses as well as six elective courses from a wide range of options. GOHi aims to expand this certificate opportunity to wider strategic partners as well as professionals at large using an online platform. | Africa Science Leadership Program (ASLP)
The
ASLP is an initiative of the University of Pretoria in partnership with the Global Young Academy, funded by the Robert Bosch Stiftung. It serves early- to mid-career researchers in basic and applied science, engineering, social sciences, arts and the humanities. The program aims to grow mid-career African academics in the areas of thought leadership, team development, engagement and collaboration, with the intention of enabling them to solve the complex issues that face both Africa and the global community.
The leadership program:
- Identifies early- to mid-career academics who have demonstrated leadership potential and an interest in developing key leadership skills
- Supports them to apply the acquired skills to projects that are relevant to the academic development on the continent and its impact on society
- Creates a network of academic leaders on the continent, spanning not only across countries, but also across disciplinary boundaries
- Advances a curriculum for academic leadership development, which can be utilized in institutions in Africa and beyond
Program structure:
- The program will use a highly interactive approach to training, application of skills to a leadership project, peer support and mentorship
- Fellows will attend an initial five-day, intensive on-site program in Pretoria, South Africa from March 16 - 21, 2018
- The process will involve an approach that cycles between theory, application and reflection. Participants will be challenged to work collaboratively to design initiatives that advance a new paradigm for African science.
The application can be completed online. Deadline to apply is January 5, 2018 at 12 p.m. UTC.
The Center for Human-Animal Interactions Research and Education (CHAIRE) Welcome Event
Attend an evening of food and fun as for the introduction of the new CFAES Center for Human-Animal Interactions Research &andEducation (CHAIRE).
The event will take place on December 7, 5 - 8 p.m. at the Price Arena (111 Animal Science Building, The Ohio State University, 2029 Fyffe Court, Columbus, OH 43210)
The evening will include an introduction of current CHAIRE members and a short presentation describing CHAIRE's vision and mission. Attendees will also have an opportunity to interact with live animals representing our four focus areas: welfare and behavior, conservation, zooeyia and companionship. Light hors d'oeuvres will be served.

International Conference on Emerging Infections
The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and the Virology Education, the Netherlands, will be organizing the first International Conference on Emerging Infections (ICREID) and the threats it poses to global health security.
ICREID will serve as a unique global platform that will bring together experts from around the world involved in (re-)emerging viruses and infections in an interactive conference setting.
The ICREID will be Africa-centered focusing on the threats (re-) emerging viruses and infections poses to global health security and ways to mitigate their impact.
The conference will target healthcare professionals, researchers, public health experts and policy makers involved in treatment, research, discovery and development of drugs and vaccines in the field of emerging viruses and infections.
