Smart Homes Made Simple
We're excited to announce a new project we're embarking on here at PATF:  Smart Homes Made Simple . Earlier this year, we received a generic technology grant from the Pennsylvania Developmental Disabilities Council (PADDC). And thus, Smart Homes Made Simple was born, a project that will raise awareness about how people with disabilities can gain control over their environment and live safely and more independently in their own homes using generic smart home technology.

To carry out this project, PATF has assembled a consumer-controlled Advisory Committee and brought in a technology consultant, Kirby Smith of  SunKirb Ideas , so that we can learn about this technology and spread our knowledge to those who can benefit from it.

Do you have a disability? Do you use AT?
We want to hear from YOU!

Share with us what your Assistive Technology (AT) means to you. What are you doing with the support of your AT?

There is nothing too big or too small - perhaps you sleep in your own bedroom upstairs with the help of a stairlift (you could post a photo of you in your bedroom); or maybe you're laughing and listening to stories told by your grandchildren with the help of your hearing aids (you could post a photo of your adorable grandkids); maybe you're carrying on the family legacy by running your family farm with help from an adapted tractor (you could post a photo from your favorite spot on your farm).

It's easy to enter:
  1. Post a photo on the PATF Facebook Page of something you are doing or have done that is important to you with help from your assistive technology (the assistive tech does not have to be in the picture).
  2. In the photo caption describe your activity or accomplishment and tell us what type of AT device you used.
  3. Include the hashtag #MyLifeWithAT2017 in your caption.
We'll keep your photo on our Facebook wall and also share it in a Facebook photo album called  #MyLifeWithAT2017 Photo Contest. Get your friends to like and comment on your original post and/or on the copy of your photo that we've posted in our album. We'll count every like and every comment as a vote.

The contest will run throughout the month of November. At the end of the month we'll choose a grand prize winner for a $100 VISA Gift Card from the top ten photos with the most likes and comments. A runner-up will also be chosen and receive a $25 VISA Gift Card. We'll announce the winner by 5:00pm EST on December 1st on our Facebook Page-please check back to see if you won.

Reflections on a Week of Assistive Technology in Costa Rica
Written by Sandra Masayko, Director of Assistive Technology at Easterseals of Southeastern Pennsylvania

Almost a year ago, Susan Tachau and I were invited by Connie Del Rosario Zúñiga, a teacher we know in Ciudad Quesada, Costa Rica to come to Costa Rica to share information about assistive technology (AT) (including communication devices) and our perspectives of the world of disability. The school, Centro de Educación Especial de San Carlos Amanda Álvarez de Ugalde, is in an agricultural region a couple of hours north of San Jose and serves children with disabilities including cerebral palsy, intellectual disabilities, and sensory disabilities. After many email exchanges and with the help of Google Translate, we set off for Costa Rica at the end of October and spent a week working at the school, followed by a week of touring in the country.
