From Our Principal

Good morning WHS families,

Last week many of our winter sports seasons started and our State winning Olympiad squad has been very busy preparing for their challenging schedule. As always, things begin to pick-up in early December and before you know it, I will be sending out the semester exam schedule and we will be discussing courses for the next school year.

Recently, I have had the opportunity to review many of the field trip experiences that we have been taking at Westlake High School.  The opportunities that are provided seem incredible.  Most impressive is that 90% of these experiences are within 30 minutes of Westlake High School.  Our students are fortunate to live in the Cleveland area and all that it provides educationally.

Finally, we held our 8th grade Open House last Thursday. The format for this event was very different from years past. We had our National Honor Society members and student leaders provide tours to individual families.  I would like to thank the NHS students and numerous staff members that were present to assist with the evening and provide a glimpse as to what daily life is like at Westlake High School and more importantly, all the opportunities that we offer.  Overall it was a tremendous evening!

As always, I encourage you to review the WHS announcements.  They are a great source of information that are updated daily. Remember to view our new Friday morning video announcements! Finally, I encourage all families to review the Westlake City Schools Profile.  It is filled with lots of information related to our school district.

Have a wonderful week!

Counselor's Corner

End-Of-Course Make Up - Students who missed the End-of-Course AIR testing last
spring, moved in from out-of-state over the summer, or need to earn higher scores for their graduation pathway have been notified they will participate in testing December 6 - December 12.  Testing dates and times, as well as practice test materials have been distributed to students participating.  If you have any questions about your child's status, please reach out to their school counselor!

CCP in the Spring - If your current CCP student is interested in taking classes off-campus in the spring, please encourage them to reach out to their school counselor in the upcoming weeks to review their course authorization form prior to registering for classes. If you child is taking a CCP class at WHS they will automatically be enrolled in the class they registered for last spring. However, if they want any changes they need to meet with their counselor.  Save the date for our CCP Information Night for the 2018/19 school year on Thursday, January 25 to learn about updates to the program and courses at WHS!

ASVAB - We will be offering an ONLINE administration of the ASVAB test this year on Wednesday, December 6 at 8:00a in our Media Center lab.  The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is the most in depth Career Assessment we are able to offer our students!  Taking the exam carries no obligation at all to the military; but rather, is provided by the military as a service to students.  The online version, is a self-paced assessment that takes about 90 minutes.  The test will be followed by instructions on how to interpret scores and how to explore careers that are matched to their interests and abilities.  All students in grades 10, 11 and 12 are invited to register in the Counseling Office. More Info on ASVAB l Practice Tests

Attention Juniors and Parents:  The Meningococcal Vaccine (MCV4/Menactra) is required for school attendance and students need to be vaccinated BEFORE the start of their Senior year.  At least one dose must be given at age 16 years or older.  An updated immunization record needs to be turned in to the school nurse before the start of the 2018-19 new school year.  Please begin submitting records as you complete well visits or call your health care provider to fax a copy to school if the vaccine has already been given.  Click HERE for complete details.
