Monday, December 4th at 5pm

Liza Mundy
(Hachette, $28.00)

Recruited by the U.S. Army and Navy from small towns and elite colleges, more than ten thousand women served as codebreakers during World War II. While their brothers and boyfriends took up arms, these women moved to Washington and learned the meticulous work of code-breaking. Their efforts shortened the war, saved countless lives, and gave them access to careers previously denied to them. A strict vow of secrecy nearly erased their efforts from history; now, through dazzling research and interviews with surviving code girls, bestselling author Liza Mundy brings to life this riveting and vital story of American courage, service, and scientific accomplishment.

Tuesday, December 5th at 5pm

Laura Lee Smith
The Ice House
(Grove, $25.00)

From a writer who's been praised for her "intelligence, heart, wit" (Richard Russo), The Ice House follows the beleaguered MacKinnons as they weather the possible loss of the family business, a serious medical diagnosis, and the slings and arrows of familial discord.

The Ice House is a vibrant portrait of multifaceted, exquisitely human characters that readers will not soon forget. It firmly establishes Laura Lee Smith as a gifted voice in American fiction.

Signed First Subscriptions

Dear Reader,

There is now a new signed first edition non-fiction book subscription available from Square Books.

Since late 1991 Square Books has offered first edition books signed by the author on a monthly subscription basis. With only a few exceptions, all the books have been fiction, usually novels and occasionally a short story collection. For many years a number of customers have asked us to provide the same service for non-fiction titles. We have resisted doing so mainly because publishers simply did not promote non-fiction books in the same way, but in recent years this has changed.

We now have two fiction groups (a 12-books and an 18-books option), the new nonfiction group, and what we're calling "the big mix," which is a combination of fiction and non-fiction books, making a total of the four following options.

1. Signed fiction -- 12 books a year, chiefly novels and the occasional book of short stories. This is our legacy program. (Note: terms and conditions for any current subscriber will not change unless requested.)

2. Signed fiction "18" -- 17 books over the year, and a bonus book from us -- to make it 18 -- at the end of the year. We have always offered this option for an additional six books.

3. Signed non-fiction -- 10 non-fiction books a year, mainly history works with an occasional book of essays, science, nature, or memoir or biography.

4. The Big Mix -- a combination of fiction and non-fiction works, 17 in all, with a bonus book from us at the end of the year.
