Nets AACOG Regional Award
Dignitaries celebrated the grand opening of the CTTC expansion in 2016, which won the AACOG 2017 Regional Award for government project of the year.

The Alamo Colleges District's Central Texas Technology Center in New Braunfels has been selected to receive the 2017 Alamo Area Council of Government's Regional Award for government project of the year. The award specifically recognizes the center for its $6.3 million expansion project which added 30,000 square feet to the center and was completed in fall 2016. 
 
The expansion of the center has contributed to the advancement of the region by enabling many more students to enroll in academic courses and workforce programs that prepare them for high-demand, well-paid jobs in the area. The expansion effectively doubled the center's size and increased the number of students it can serve who are seeking technical certifications or an associate degree to more than 3,500. This is the second time the center has received this award. It was also recognized when it opened in 2004.
 
The center's enrollment has steadily grown since it first opened to meet the educational and workforce needs of Comal and Guadalupe counties. In addition to academic and workforce programs, it offers dual credit classes that allow area high school students to earn college credits at no charge while still in high school.
 
The expansion of the center was funded by $4 million from the New Braunfels 2013 bond program, a $1.4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration and funds from the New Braunfels 4B Economic Development Corporation and the Seguin 4A Economic Development Corporation.

Alamo Colleges District Board of Trustees Names Joe Jesse Sanchez as New District 9 Trustee
Veteran educator Joe Jesse Sanchez
has been named the District 9 Trustee
for the Alamo Colleges District.

At a special meeting of the Alamo Colleges District Board of Trustees on November 8, veteran educator Joe Jesse Sanchez was sworn in as the District 9 trustee. He will serve until May 2018, when elections for several positions on the board, including District 9, will be held. The District 9 seat was previously occupied by James Rindfuss, who served for 21 years until his death earlier this year.

Sanchez has served since 2008 as the administrator of the Bexar County Juvenile Probation Department's Juvenile Justice Academy. In his 45 years as an educator, he has served as a teacher, community information officer, principal and assistant principal and superintendent, and in additional administrative positions in the Harlandale, Edgewood and San Antonio Independent School Districts. He also taught as an adjunct professor at Texas A&M University - Kingsville.

Sanchez began his college career at Alamo Colleges District - San Antonio College and earned a bachelor's degree from St. Mary's University and a master's degree in education from Our Lady of the Lake University. His community involvement includes serving as a board member of the Andy Mireles Charitable Foundation and the Texas A&M - San Antonio Graduate Alternative Certification Advisory Board. 

He formerly served as the board chair of the New Frontiers Charter School board and as a Bexar County Juvenile Justice Academy advisory board member and chair. He has been honored with the 2008 Hombre Noble award from the San Antonio Fatherhood Campaign and the Community Champion award from the Bexar County Consumer and Family Conference.

at Carnegie Hall

Alamo Colleges District - Palo Alto College (PAC) music student Alexander Montalvo has been selected for the Young Adult Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall, a program created to showcase accomplished young performers on an international level by allowing them to study under master conductors and perform in the celebrated venue, Carnegie Hall. Participation is limited to the highest-rated 18- to 25-year-old vocalists from around the world.

Montalvo has studied music for four years and is a member of the Palo Alto Concert Choir. He is currently a second-year music student at PAC and studies under faculty member Edlyn de Oliveira. He was recently seen as Tony in Teatro Palo Alto's 2017 production of "West Side Story."

Montalvo auditioned for the Honors Performance Series earlier this year and was accepted after a review by the Honors Selection Board. Acceptance to the elite group is a direct result of the talent, dedication, and achievements demonstrated in his application and audition recording. Montalvo will join other performers from 24 U.S. states and New Zealand for a special performance at New York City's world-famous Carnegie Hall, a venue that marks the pinnacle of musical achievement.

Finalists will come together in New York City for five days in February. They will have the opportunity to learn from a world-renowned conductor, work with other finalists and get a taste of the city. The Honors Choral Performance will take place Sunday, February 4 at 2 p.m. and is open to the public.
