ADMIN LETTER

Dear WCA Families,

It is crazy how quickly we are moving from Halloween to Thanksgiving Break! This year is going by so fast!

Thank you to everyone who attended the Groundbreaking! It was so much fun to see all of the students with their hard hats and shovels. This is definitely a day we will all remember! I can't wait to see the progress on the building in the upcoming months!

Thank you to all who came out to see the presentations and performances during the Taste of World Compass event last week. We hope you were able to get a picture of what a day is like in the life of your student. Our teachers did an amazing job of sharing all the unique attributes of WCA.

One of my favorite recent events was the assembly centered around Compassion and the Trimester Cougar Essential Awards. I loved seeing the joy on the kids' faces when they were called up for an award. It was even more satisfying to see how supportive other students were when their friends received an award. Our students do an amazing job of being compassionate and loyal friends to one another.

I hope that everyone has a restful and exciting Thanksgiving Break. I am truly thankful to be a part of such an amazing community here at WCA.

Have a great rest of your week,

Sam Tracy
Assistant Principal

Hopefully you have been able to attend one of the musical performances in the last month.
Our students and staff have been working hard and have done a fantastic job!

LETTER FROM THE SAC

Hello from your WCA School Accountability Committee!

We have been busy behind the scenes collecting useful data to help make our school community the best that it can be! Two times each school year we conduct three surveys (teacher, parents, and students) to track the successes and needs of our school. The Unified Improvement Plan (UIP) is adopted with goals that we set based on the data we collect from these surveys.  We have just finished up going through the data collected from the teacher survey that the administration uses to help them identify the points of success and areas that need to grow. WCA has a lot to be proud of:
  • Our teachers feel supported and empowered.
  • They feel like the data they collect on each student is useful.
  • The curriculum being taught meets the needs of our students.
  • As we all know, the staff at WCA is amazing, and you will be happy to know that a large number of our staff plans on continuing to teach at WCA!
Our committee identified three areas of growth that the teachers would love to see improvement on, and a plan of action is already in place in each one of the three areas!
  • Communication surrounding areas of student conduct/discipline
    • Our Administration team is working hard on developing a matrix that better explains the timeline of taking care of the more difficult cases.
  • Curriculum Support
    • Teachers will be selecting team leads to help answer questions that may arise when teaching.
  • Streamline leveling procedures and change requests for ability grouping
    • To help alleviate the pressure that some teachers have felt from the parent body, a body of evidence will be collected to help teachers and parents see where the child should be placed for ability groups.
On Monday  November 27, 2017 , parents can expect to see a link to the Parent Survey from their child's homeroom teacher. We know that this survey is long, but as a committee, we would love to hear MORE feedback. We have averaged less than 50% participation each time we put the survey out. We can only get better as a school if we hear what you think about what is going on at the school from your family's perspective. As always, these surveys are completely anonymous, and we appreciate all of the feedback we get. However, sometimes the comments we receive are just complaints/venting and do not provide us with anything constructive to go off of. This year we ask that if you have a complaint, please also provide what you think would be a helpful solution to the problem, and we can use that to help WCA be the best school!

Thank you!
WCA SAC

SNOW DELAYS & CLOSURES

With winter quickly approaching, we wanted to remind everyone about our procedures for snow delays and closures.

All school closures can be found on the World Compass Academy website (generally updated shortly after 5:00am). We will also update our Facebook page and send a school-wide email.

If the school calls for a delayed start, elementary and middle school students will begin 90 minutes later at 9:30am. Both AM Preschool and AM Kindergarten will be cancelled. PM Preschool and PM Kindergarten will run on their regular schedule. Before and After Care will begin at 8:00am. If WCA is closed for weather, no Before or After Care will be provided.

If you feel the road conditions are unsafe, we respect your decision to keep your child(ren) home, even if school is open. In such cases, please call WCA's Attendance Line at 303-814-5280 and your child(ren)'s absence will be recorded as excused.

them in; otherwise, your student will be marked with an unexcused tardy. If you don't call the Attendance Line to let us know that your child will be tardy or absent, parents will receive an automated call from DCSD. Thank you for your cooperation! If you have any questions, please contact  Mary Bertke.

Trip Forms. Are you going on a trip? If you plan to take your student out of school for more than a day, please complete the  Trip Form. GIFTED CORNER

Gifted Programming at WCA

At World Compass Academy, we strive to meet the needs of each individual student and help them to achieve new heights. Due to the personalized nature, gifted programming may look different for each student using the following framework:

Tier 1 Interventions
  • In-class differentiation
  • Ability grouping within the grade level
  • Participation in academic competitions

Tier 2 Interventions
  • Ability grouping between grade levels
  • Push in classroom support from the Gifted Facilitator
  • Enrichment/differentiation support via materials provided by the Gifted Facilitator

Tier 3 Interventions
  • Pull out interventions and/or instruction

All interventions will correlate with the Advanced Learning Plan goals for each student. Every effort is made to meet the student's needs using Tier 1 and Tier 2 interventions prior to considering Tier 3 interventions. This allows the student to have the support and challenge more consistently during every school day. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Kate Parker.
