THOUGHT LEADER SERIES INAUGURAL GUEST: STEVE WOZNIAK
As thought leaders go, Apple computer inventor Steve Wozniak certainly ranks among the elite on the planet. He is slated to be the first guest of the Muma College of Business Thought Leader Series when he comes to the Tampa campus on Feb. 20. The Woz is part entrepreneur, philanthropist, dancer on "DWTS" and so much more. ANALYTICS CENTER PLUNGES INTO INNOVATIVE REAL-TIME DATA
The USF Muma College of Business' Center for Analytics and Creativity and the Tampa Bay Partnership have teamed up to generate research that reveals Tampa Bay's competitive standing next to 19 other, similar communities across the nation. DBA STUDENTS SHINE, WIN AWARD AT RESEARCH CONFERENCE
Business scenarios involved felony theft, a devastating fire, a heart attack and whether the owner of a family feed and seed store should hand the business to his daughter. These were among the cases studied and written about by Muma College of Business Doctor of Business Administration students during a prestigious business research conference in Chicago last month. To read more, click here.
CORPORATE MENTOR PROGRAM SHOWS ITS STUFF ON VIDEO
Just about everyone in the Muma College of Business knows that the Corporate Mentor Program is a jewel that is integral to student success. A new video showcases ways the program fosters achievement among students, particularly first-generation students who sometimes struggle to make ends meet and have little experience in the business/educational setting. DOZENS ATTEND FLORIDA SBDC ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CLASS
Three dozen professionals, mostly from Florida, but a handful from out of state, including one from Wyoming, attended the 41st Annual Basic Economic Development Course offered by the Florida Small Business Development Center at USF. The four-day course included a tour of Port Tampa Bay. To read more, click here. STUDENTS STUDYING LOCAL TECH SECURITY COMPANY WIN AWARD
A collaborative effort between biz/tech students and a local tech company won the Tampa Bay Technology Forum's Industry/Academic Partnership of the Year award. The prize was earned through the connection between the Muma College of Business and ReliaQuest. Instructor Matt Mullarkey says students applied classroom learning to real-life situations. GRADUATE STUDENTS TAKE HONORS IN FALL CASE COMPETITION
A team of students claimed the top prize in the Fall Muma College of Business Graduate Business Case Competition. The case came from Lumina Analytics and the winning student recommendations won them a spot in the 2018 Florida Intercollegiate Business Case Competition to be held in February at the Muma College of Business. ISDS STUDENTS EXAMINE CREDIT UNION SERVICES SOLUTIONS
Muma College of Business Information Systems and Decision Sciences students have developed a method for PSCU to introduce voice-command interfaces to credit-union records systems. Two grad students were selected to create an integrated Internet of Things project involving Amazon Echo and Google Home devices. To read more, click here.
HUNDREDS OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ATTEND BIG DATA DAYS
Nearly 500 high school students from 10 schools in the Tampa Bay area converged on USF earlier this month to take part in the Kforce Big Data Days event. Begun last year, the day was set aside for USF's business and engineering colleges to talk up the benefits of earning a technical or business analytics/information systems degree from USF. PERSONAL FINANCIAL PLANNING PROGRAM GETS CERTIFICATION
The new Personal Financial Planning program, which began this semester, was approved by the CFP Board of Standards, an organization that sets educational and professional standards. Graduates will fill vacancies in a profession that's being depleted by retirement and likely will start with high salaries. To read more, click here. 
FACULTY/STAFF NOTES 
  • Bill Sutton, director of the Vinik Sport & Entertainment Management Program, has accepted an invitation to be a distinguished scholar to lecture at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Sutton will travel to the Wisconsin campus in April to deliver one lecture to the public and three lectures for students in the UW-L Exercise and Sport Science Department. Sutton also delivered the keynote address this month at the Future of Sport Symposium on Global Sport Business Education at the University of Worcester in the Untied Kingdom.
  • Jennifer Cainas, instructor in the Lynn Pippenger School of Accountancy, has
     
    won the USF Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award. Cainas is no stranger to teaching awards. In 2014 and 2015, she won back-to-back Beta Alpha Psi Outstanding Teaching Awards and she took the Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award at USF in the 2008-09 academic year and again in 2013-14. Also in 2013-14, she won the Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award.
  • David J. Ortinau, professor of marketing, has been selected as one of four guest editors of an upcoming Journal of Business Research special issue titled "Corroborating Empirical Evidence from Published Marketing Research."
  • Jeannette A. Mena recently was granted tenure and has been promoted to  associate professor in the Marketing Department. She teaches marketing strategy, marketing management and international marketing and also mentors doctoral students.
  • Moez Limayem, dean of the Muma College of Business, recently received USF World's Outstanding Global Engagement Award in the wake of unprecedented numbers of international students enrolling in the business college and the increase of international partnerships.
  • Rob Hooker was the recipient of the 2017 Outstanding Faculty Award, given at a ceremony earlier this month. Hooker is an assistant professor in the marketing department and teaches courses in market research, marketing strategy and supply-chain management.
  • Mike Mondello, professor with the Vinik Sport & Entertainment Management Program, is one of the experts quoted in a data-rich WalletHub article that seeks to find the best baseball cities in the nation. Mondello, who has worked with the Tampa Bay Rays' front office in searching out a location in the region where the Rays can move to bump attendance, also talks about the best way to enjoy a game on a budget, issues facing MLB and how fantasy sports will affect the game.   • Lynn Pippenger ('88 Executive MBA) was named Philanthropist of the Year by the Suncoast Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. The retired Raymond James chief financial officer's name is on the Muma College of Business accountancy school as well as the centerpiece building at the Kate Tiedemann College of Business on the USF-St. Petersburg campus. Pippenger has pledged more than $25 million in donations to both campuses.
  • N. Gokce Tezel ('98 MBA) was named president of GATX Rail International, a global railcar lessor. He had been vice president of GATX and senior vice president of business development with GATX Rail International. He will assume leadership of GATX Rail International in March.
  • Aaj Solanki ('14 Accounting) is now doing forensic/litigation work for Oscher Consulting in Tampa. Solanki previously worked at Deloitte.
  • John Fallon ('98, MBA) is now a strategic advisor with Patient Discovery, which assists medical patients in understanding and adhering to instructions through a point-of-care solution. He previously had served as senior vice president and chief physician executive at Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Massachusetts.
  • James X. Llende ('91 MAcc) has joined American Electric Power as vice president overseeing the company's federal, state and local tax compliance, tax audit, tax accounting and tax planning functions. Llende was senior tax director at NextEra Energy.
  • Paul Grassi ('85, MBA) has joined Alliant's Americas division as senior vice president. he will work out of Orlando and New York and focus on firms throughout the eastern United States.

* Dec. 1, is the deadline to apply to the Doctor of Business Administration program in the Muma College of Business. * Jan. 26, deadline to nominate USF Bull-owned or Bull-operated businesses for the 2018 USF Fast 56 Awards. Being named to the list makes a business part of an elite group of fellow Bulls who are publicly honored for making their marks in business and in their communities. * Jan. 28-30, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, which sets the standard for excellence in business colleges around the globe, will visit the Muma College of Business as part of its five-year re-accreditation process. A peer review team, made up of leaders in other businesses colleges, will examine policies and procedures to determine whether the Muma College of Business will receive its accreditation renewal for the next five years.
