Board Highlights are timely recaps of School Board meetings. They are emailed to staff, parents, and interested community members before the official minutes are approved and posted.

Work Session

Kurt A. Schneider, NSSED Superintendent, Trisha Kocanda, Superintendent, and Beth Martin, Director of Student Services, conducted this session on integrated systems of support and special education. The discussion was framed by research and policy that have evolved since the inception of legislated special education services.  The work session supported annual goals in the Reaching All Learners domain.

Regular Meeti ng 

Kristen Hertel, Board President, welcomed all in attendance. She acknowledged American Education Week and wished the school community a Happy Thanksgiving.

Trisha Kocanda, Superintendent,  shared that it has been an eventful week in the District, with visits from Dr. Arun Gandhi, Rep. Robyn Gabel, and Stanford University's Dr. Jo Boaler. She thanked the Future Ready D36 Core Team for the many hours they have spent touring school environments in the Chicagoland area, and noted that District staff and administrators recently spent time with Winnetka Police and Fire Department leaders for a routine review of safety practices. She also thanked the Board for their service in light of School Board Members Day.

Presentations


Jason Lembke, Principal, DLR Group, shared an update on progress made on this initiative, such as the October 24 "Global Perspectives" community engagement sessions, student and staff ideation, and Core Team facility tours in the Chicagoland area. This video of recent site visits was shared. Mr. Lembke shared information gleaned from Global Perspectives and ideation sessions, and previewed the next step in the Future Ready D36 process, which focuses on Programming.
Brad Goldstein, Chief Financial Officer, presented information on the 2017 Tentative Levy. The Levy is a request for property tax income, representing over 90% of the District's annual revenue. A public hearing to discuss the proposed tax increase, and the School Board approval of the levy will be held at the December 19, 2017, Board Meeting. The District is seeking an aggregate levy increase of 1.08%.  The 2017 Tentative Levy was approved later in the evening.
Informational Memos


This monthly update highlights progress toward the Reaching All Learners goals in the District' Strategic Plan.  Highlights this month include: 90% of parents reporting satisfied/very satisfied in response to "Which of the following best describes your experience with the Winnetka Public School District 36?," female participation in Skokie School's Drop-In MakerSpace reaching 40%, and the expansion of the Math Forum program to fifth and sixth grades.


The annual School Improvement Plans were shared, the last to be initiated in the fall.  The new cycle will run from spring to spring to better align professional development and planning.  The School Improvement Plans are customized to the needs of each school.  The areas of focus include special education programming, response to intervention, community engagement, quantifying programmatic improvements, and advisory programming.  Progress on goals will be shared in February 2018.

The District Improvement Plan focuses on the key academic areas of math and reading, developed through professional collaboration and informed by a comprehensive data review process.  Grade specific and cohort specific action steps were shared along with measures and outcomes.   Progress on goals will be shared in February 2018.
The policy subcommittee reviewed six regulatory policy changes and four District-initiated policy changes.  Recommendations were reviewed by the  School Board for potential adoption.

Regular meetings are open to the public and will be held at Carleton Washburne School through June 2018. Regular meetings begin at 7:15 p.m. Work sessions are also open to the public and may be scheduled at the discretion of the Board. Discussion topics and times for work sessions will be posted on the District website 24 hours in advance.
