Murray & Rhoda Finck Global Engagement Fund Donations
In 2016, "The Murray and Rhoda Finck Global Engagement Mission Fund" (GEM Fund) was established. It is named in honor of Bishop Emeritus Murray Finck and his wife Rhoda, in recognition and appreciation of their service and accomplishments during the 18 years that Bishop Murray served as Bishop of the Pacifica Synod of the ELCA (from 1998 through 2016).

The goals of the fund are:
  1. To assist congregations of the Pacifica Synod in their Global Mission efforts.
  2. To initiate and/or continue direct support of present and future Companion Synods of the Pacifica Synod.
  3. To share in ministry with God's people as we together strive for a lasting world peace.
Distribution of funds may be given to increase awareness of global mission work, to fund domestic and/or foreign projects related to Pacifica Companion Synods and Lutheran partners and provide assistance in travel expenses related to the fund's stated goals.

Now with the Holidays rapidly approaching we are offering you another option to contribute to the GEM Fund and honor your loved ones. With a gift to the GEM Fund in their name, you will be recognizing them as contributors to increasing awareness of Global Mission work.

Please send your contribution to Pacifica Synod of the ELCA, 1801 Park Court Place, Bldg. C, Santa Ana, CA 92701-5010. Attn: GEM Fund.

Please contact LeRoy Loseke, 310.487.7322,  with any questions.

Happy Holidays,

Advent Resources - ELCA World Hunger

If you are still looking for an adult study for Advent, ELCA World Hunger Appeal has created this four-session Advent Study, "The World is About to Turn".

Drawing on the Hymn, "Canticle of the Turning", based on Mary's song, this four session study is based on the Scripture readings for each week in Advent. They can be used during worship, educational forums, in small groups or in the hop for personal reflection to prepare for Christmas and the new year.

ELCA Draft Social Statement on Women and Justice
In 2009, the Churchwide Assembly authorized the development of a social statement on women and justice. The ELCA Task Force on Women and Justice: One in Christ has been at work since 2012 and brought their work to a crucial stage. On November 15, 2017 it released the Draft of a Social Statement on Women and Justice. The comment period on the Draft is open until September 30, 2018.

Information about the Draft, along with an FAQ, overview, brochure, information about the task force, timeline and information about how to participate in the comment period may be found here.
New Tools for Extending Your Christmas Invitation

Advent and Christmas are right around the corner and can be a very busy time in the life of this church. To support your communication needs, the ELCA has prepared a number of invitational tools created specifically for congregations. Many people will look for a place to worship this Christmas. Extend a welcoming invitation to your neighbors and community by sharing your worship times and location!

The Christmas collection is available in English and Spanish and offers customizable posters, post cards, doorhangers and social media. "Let us be your home for the holidays," "This Christmas, there is a place for you here" and more - all concepts include a welcoming invitation for others to come and experience worship at your congregation. Select the creative design that will work best for your congregation.

Thank you for the work you do each day in your congregation and in your community. Visit ELCA.org/CongTools often and find links to a variety of tools to help with your communication needs, and continue to send suggestions for other tools that might be good resources for congregations.
Resourceful Servants - Congregational Certification Program
We often speak of the many dimensions of wellness in our lives - spiritual, intellectual, emotional, social and physical, for instance. Financial well-being is another vital component in our endeavor to live well. In the months and years ahead, the ELCA will focus on this concept as we embark on "Resourceful Servants," an initiative to encourage habits that strengthen and sustain individual and congregational financial wellness and growth.

Through the Congregational Certificate Program, your congregation has the opportunity to follow a road map to greater financial stability, using healthy behaviors which focus on five key areas: Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, Risk Management and Stewardship.

Each module contains resources related to healthy financial behaviors. Ultimately, by implementing and maintaining a set of financially healthy behaviors, and tracking them through this website, your congregations will receive a certificate, indicating your focus on financial health.

More information about this initiative, go to https://resourcefulservants.org/.

Celebrating Ministry Together!
You're Invited - Installation of Julie Kelly - December 10
We are pleased to share that the congregation of Hope Lutheran in Riverside, has called Julie A. Kelly, Approved Candidate for Ministry of Word and Sacrament, to be their pastor. All are invited to attend her installation on Sunday, December 10th at 3:00 p.m. at Hope Lutheran, 2882 Arlington Avenue, Riverside.

Julie is beginning her first call after graduating the Luther Seminary Distributed Learning Program for MDiv's in 2016.  She completed her CPE at Los Angles County Hospital and her Internship in Santa Monica while living in San Fernando Valley and SWCA Synod.  She is married to Lance and they have 4 adult children together. She has strong military ties due to Lance's service in the US Army (recently retired) and is an advocate to help prevent the rising tide of military and Veteran suicides.  Her undergraduate degree from Ft. Hays State in Hay, KS is in Organizational Leadership with emphasis on Organizational Change and Human Services.  She loves using art to prepare sermons and her favorite topic that raises eyebrows is how Christians can reclaim healthy sexuality.  Her pink streak of hair is her statement of faith that trusts that others can see past exterior assumptions to the value of the human underneath.
Save the Date - Spencer Steele's Ordination
We are pleased to announce that Spencer Steele, an approved candidate, has accepted his first call to The Church of the Holy Spirit in Emmaus, Pennsylvania.

You're invited to celebrate with Spencer as he is ordained on Sunday, January 14 at 5:00 p.m. at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Dana Point. More details will follow in the weeks ahead. Congratulations, Spencer!

Alternate Ways to Think About God  - January 2018
A monthly discussion group exploring alternate beliefs about God and the Bible is being organized by Pastor George Johnson at Regents Point (19191 Harvard Avenue) in Irvine.

"A growing number of people have found that ideas and beliefs we have been taught do not square with science or current experiences..." Pastor George said. "Some traditional liturgies and dogmas that once gave us comfort and security no longer seem to satisfy." Many religious leaders are reluctant to explore new ideas.

Change is seldom easy. Where is there a place to go to discuss alternative beliefs? This is the question that motivates this gathering. Differing views are welcome.

The book,  The Great Spiritual Migration by Brian McLaren (2016) will be one resource along with a variety of articles such as those found in the book, Courage To Think Differently. There are free copies. McLaren's book is available in audible format.

The first monthly meeting will be in January 2018. A room has been reserved. People who wish to learn more may contact Pastor George at 949.380.0044 or by email at [email protected] or stop by the Johnson villa (19191 Harvard Avenue #116E) for a visit.
