The Torch chapter of
Mortar Board honored Associate Professor Yvonnes Chen as a 2017 Outstanding Educator at halftime of the men's basketball game on Nov. 17. Mortar Board is a national college senior honors society that values scholarship, leadership and service. Since 1974, Mortar Board members have nominated and selected five winning educators each year who are devoted to academia, teaching style, accessibility, and knowledge of their subject as well as their positive influence on students both academically and personally. Chen wants to share this award with her supportive network of colleagues, without whom this award would not be possible. Other 2017 winners include Andrea Herstowski (

Chen was also inducted into Phi Beta Delta Honors Society on Nov. 14. Phi Beta Delta recognizes students, faculty and staff who have distinguished themselves through their participation in international education.
Associate Professor Jerry Crawford was interviewed by the Atlanta Black Star's Frederick Reese for the article, "Twenty-Five Percent of HBCU's Student Body Is Non-Black: Is This the End of Majority Black Schools?" The article focuses on how Historically Black Colleges and Universities' demographics are becoming increasingly less black, with some, such as Bluefield State College, not black at all and why HBCUs are becoming more diverse. Social Justice Fellows Program
The University of Kansas Office of Multicultural Affairs is accepting applications for the 2018 cohort of the Social Justice Fellows Program. Now entering its third year, the program provides intensive direction to faculty and staff on issues of social justice, inclusion and systemic oppression. The deadline is Dec. 8.

ASME Magazine Internship Program 2018, a 10-week program for rising college seniors at magazines in New York and Washington, D.C. The deadline to apply is Dec. 1. Students who are interested should contact

Hearst Journalism Fellowship
The Hearst Journalism Fellowship is actively recruiting for its next class that starts in late summer 2018. The fellowship is a two-year program focusing on journalism in a changing digital world. The fellowship program consists of two 12-month rotations at top metro papers. Fellows will receive training, mentoring and real-world experience alongside top journalists who are using cutting-edge tools to tell stories through data, video, and more. Scholarships and contests
|
Each year, students are eligible to apply for School of Journalism scholarships. All students admitted to the school are encouraged to apply. Students who receive KU renewable scholarships should note that the School of Journalism will likely be funding those scholarships during their junior and senior years. Students receiving renewable scholarships should still apply for journalism scholarships; additional funds may be available. Applications are due Dec. 1, and scholarship recipients will be notified in April 2018. Scholarships are for the Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 academic year. Apply here.

Deadlines are approaching for the Hearst Journalism Awards Program, which
provide support, encouragement and assistance to journalism education at the college and university level. The program awards scholarships to students for outstanding performance in college-level journalism, with matching grants to the students' schools. See all the categories and deadlines here, and contact Lisa McLendon if you would like to enter the competition.
The Pretty Presets for Lightroom Scholarship Program will award a $500 scholarship bi-annually to a high school or college student who submits a unique essay and meets the requirements detailed on its scholarship web page. Deadline to enter is Dec. 15.

The J-School is sponsoring a Media Literacy Town Hall discussion Monday, Dec. 11, at 7 p.m. at Lawrence Public Library. J-School professors and local media professionals will lead a dialogue about the current media landscape and how to evaluate news for accuracy and validity. Members of the community are encouraged to attend and ask questions or offer comment.
April Matthews, the Peace Corps campus representative for the University of Kansas, will have an information booth from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 29 in the Clarkson Gallery. She will discuss opportunities to volunteer with governments, schools, nonprofit organizations, non-government organizations and entrepreneurs in education, business, information technology, agriculture, health and environment.
