Fox Trot raises more than $11K for playground improvements
|
|
As a school, Fox Prairie families recently raised a total of $11,735 for playground improvements.
Fox Prairie and its Working for Kids group organized a Fox Trot fun run in October, where students collected pledges and donations for laps they ran on Fox Prairie grounds on Oct. 20.
The kids ultimately ran a total of 6,702 laps. That is 394 miles, which is more than the distance between Stoughton and St. Louis, Mo.!
To celebrate their success, Fox hosted a school assembly on Friday, Nov. 3, in which students and classes were recognized for their success. The five students who raised the most money were able to "slime" principal Krista Huntley Rogers.
Great job students, staff and families!

Sign up to be one of the Watch D.O.G.S. at Kegonsa
|
Community members can still sign up to volunteer in a classroom at Kegonsa Elementary School through the Watch D.O.G.S. program.
Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) is an initiative from the National Center for Fathering designed to increase the engagement and involvement of male role models in school and highlight the importance of education and safe, responsible behavior, according to a program presentation from Kegonsa. Watch D.O.G.S. are uncles, fathers, mentors, dads and grandpas that spend a day at Kegonsa working in classrooms, playing at recess with students, and most importantly acting as a positive male role model.

Sandhill assemblies focus on mindfulness, positive messages
|
Positive messages about doing well in school, breathing to relax and to focus and a little dancing all came together in assemblies for Sandhill Elementary students today (Nov. 15).
JusTme (Timothy Scott, Jr.,) a mindful hip-hop artist and mindfulness instructor, visited the school this afternoon to lead students through special assemblies about how to promote mindfulness. He was to follow with another program for staff and families after school.
JusTme has collaborated with Richard Davidson's Center for Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to help with a study on the benefits of bringing mindfulness into elementary school classrooms, according to Sandhill.
Today's assemblies are to kick off an effort where staff will share
mindfulness messages with students throughout the school year.

Our new Fab Lab webpage has a "one-stop shopping" feature when it comes to signing up for upcoming Family/Child workshops and Adults-Only workshops.
We have Family/Child Workshops scheduled for Dec. 6, 13 and 20. The activity is Laser Cut Snowflakes/Ornaments.
We have an Adults-Only Workshop scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 9, with the activity of Holiday Inlay.
All workshops are free of charge, but slots are limited and only available on a first come, first served basis.

Stoughton schools last week saluted our servicemen and servicewomen through Veterans Day programs.
Fox Prairie, Kegonsa and Sandhill elementary schools all hosted programs on Friday, Nov. 10. At Fox, local veterans were invited to participate in a brief ceremony that included a few minutes of silence, the Pledge of Allegiance and an announcement about the origins and importance of Veterans Day. Later that morning, Fox Prairie third-graders put on a Veterans Day concert at the Stoughton Senior Center. Kegonsa and Sandhill also hosted programs that recognized local veterans and their families at school.
Veterans also greeted students from
both River Bluff Middle School and Stoughton High School as they entered the buildings on Nov. 9 and 10, respectively.

Ella's Make-A-Wish comes true
|
From the Nov. 10 River Bluff e-News:
Seventh-grader Ella Phillips wished to meet her favorite NASCAR driver, Chase Elliott. With a request to the Make-a-Wish Foundation, Ella's wish came true. In October, Ella's journey started with a limo ride to the airport, then off to Kansas City and the Kansas City Speedway. On race day, she had a chance to meet Chase Elliott and tour the garage areas and see people work on the race cars, including Chase Elliott's team. Elliott did well and came in 4th place during the race.
Many people helped Ella's wish come true, including Make-a-Wish Wisconsin, NASCAR Foundation, Chase Elliott and Hendricks Motor Sports, Great Wolf Lodge, Kansas City Speedway and Make-a-Wish Missouri.

Sandhill begins first phase of outdoor classroom
|
Volunteers from First Lutheran's Love Stoughton group, as well as Sandhill families and staff, started installing the first phase of the school's new outdoor classroom earlier this month. The Love Stoughton group also financed all of the materials needed for the project.
"This area was designed and inspired by our kindergarten team to provide an outdoor space for student inquiry-based learning," according to principal Jeff Fimreite. "We are hoping in the near future to also add phase two and three which include a Wisconsin Prairie (space), a tree walk and an overlook deck for viewing into the rain garden that is currently in place."
Sandhill hopes to add tree stumps in the near future to complete the classroom area, which is the first phase of the project.

PIE program connects Advanced Chemistry students with UW-Whitewater lab experience
|
Advanced Chemistry students traveled to UW-Whitewater last week
as part of the UWW's Partnerships In Education (PIE) program.
Students performed a chemistry lab, toured campus, attended a biology seminar and met with students and professors in the math/computer science, physics, chemistry, biology, geology and geography departments.
Thank you to Dr. Kim Naber and Dr. Catherine Chan for giving our students a great experience.

Athletics: Two seniors sign Letters of Intent, SHS finishes strong fall season
|
|
Stoughton High School last week celebrated two students signing their National Letters of Intent.
Tyler Dow signed his National Letter of Intent for the University of Wisconsin-Madison wrestling program, while Dillon Nowicki signed his Letter of Intent to play baseball at Michigan.

Next Open Swim at SHS Pool is Nov. 27
There will be a special "
open
swim" from
12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27, at the Stoughton High School Pool.
Youth are $2 and adults are $3 for admission. Kids must be at least 11 years old to come unaccompanied to the pool.

Sandhill bake sale raises $300 for START
Sandhill Student Council members sponsored a bake sale during parent teacher conferences for the SToughton Area Resource Team (START). Leaders took shifts working the bake sale and members donated baked goods. The kids raised over $300!
START provides a safety net for those in crisis. It links Stoughton area residents under 55 with community resources and provides support in housing, utilities, transportation, health, and employment.

SHS student artwork displayed in LMC
We have some talented student artists in our district, and visitors to the Stoughton High School Library Media Center can see some of their work.
Students in the SHS Painting and Drawing Class recently painted Oil on Masonite Self-Portraits, and their work was displayed at the LMC.

Stoughton High School is looking for community volunteers who are interested in sharing their time and/or talents with its students during the school's study hall period(s) as either mentors or academic coaches in subjects such as math, reading, social studies, etc.
