CITY OF NEW ORLEANS TO HOLD ABANDONED VEHICLE AUCTION

NEW ORLEANS - On Tuesday, July 12, 2016, the City of New Orleans Department of Public Works will hold its fourth abandoned vehicle auction of 2016. The auction will take place at the Almonaster Auto Impound lot located at 10200 Almonaster Avenue andbegins at 9:00 a.m.

Since May 2010, the City of New Orleans has held 28 vehicle auctions, selling 2,865 abandoned cars and contributing over $1.9 million to the City's General Fund.
The current auction will have 98 vehicles for sale, all of which have been discarded on neighborhood streets or left unclaimed by residents with excessive parking fines and fees.

Abandoned vehicles take up valuable curb space needed for traffic circulation and become an eyesore in neighborhoods. To combat this quality of life nuisance, the City of New Orleans Department of Public Works has towed 8,186 vehicles in 2016.

Online Bidding: Introduced in March 2009, the City will continue use of its online bidding feature. Residents interested in online bidding need to register with Proxibid prior to the auction start time by visiting www.brownsauction.com. The online bidding feature allows residents to preview and pre-bid on any vehicle prior to the live auction. You may view vehicle information online by entering the vehicle information number (VIN), and bid on vehicles from anywhere in the world as the auction proceeds live from the Almonaster Auto Impound Lot located at 10200 Almonaster Avenue.

All prospective bidders must register before viewing. A refundable $50 fee is required to view and/or bid on any vehicle during the auction. The fee will be applied to any purchase made or refunded if no purchase is made.

Brown's Auction Company from Lafayette, LA, is the State of Louisiana's licensed, authorized dealer and conducts auctions on all City of New Orleans equipment.

Individuals interested in purchasing a vehicle are encouraged to pre-register and arrive early on Tuesday, as many cars sell within the first few minutes of the auction.

Quick Facts
  • All vehicle information is currently available on Brown's Auction Web site. Per the terms of the contract, the available vehicle list includes the VIN, make, model, and lien holder information. Any auction-related questions should be directed to Brown's Auction Company at (337) 457-4919.
  • The current auction will be advertised on Friday, July 8, 2016.
  • Prior to the auction, attempts are made to contact the vehicle's owner or lien holder before the vehicles are added to the auction list. Vehicle owners or lien holders that pay all fines and fees are able to retrieve their vehicles prior to the auction.

Purchasing a vehicle
  • Cash or cashier's check required
  • Payment must be received on the day of the auction. If payment is not received, the purchased vehicle will be placed on the list for the next scheduled auction, the bidder's $50 deposit is forfeited and the bidder is barred from participation in future auctions.
  • A $50 administrative fee will be added for each purchased vehicle which provides the bidder with a notarized title to that vehicle
  • City employees and relatives of City employees are forbidden from purchasing any vehicles at the auction.

As longtime volunteer and board member, I wanted to reach out and send a personal invite to YLC's Projects Fair on Tuesday, July 12 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., at the Louisiana Children's Museum.

This is the 30th anniversary of YLC, and I can personally attest to the difference we've made in the community in my six years involved in the organization. We recycled before there was curbside pickup again. We have brought music to Lafayette Square every spring. We installed bike racks throughout the city to make it easier for people to get around. We built community gardens in neighborhoods that never had them. We spent Saturdays with kids in Central City making sure for a few hours that they had a safe place to play and got to eat breakfast and lunch. We taught students about job interviews and resume writing. We've done all of this and more because of volunteers like you and me coming out and supporting our projects.

This Tuesday's project fair is an opportunity to get engaged with YLC and our projects. Whether it is your first time hearing about YLC or you are a long time member, come out have a drink, some food, and explore the Louisiana Children's Museum. Meet our project leaders and find out how you can get involved. Our projects are doing amazing work every day to make sure that New Orleans is always a place that we can be Proud to Call Home. We can't do any of that work without volunteers like you.

I hope to see you Tuesday, and am happy to talk more about the impact YLC has had in my life and what it has meant to give back. If you can make it,  please let us know here.
Thank you,
Kevin Ferguson

City Officials Ask for Public's Input Ahead of 2017 Budgeting for Outcomes Process

NEW ORLEANS -  Mayor Mitch Landrieu and the New Orleans City Council will host a series of community meetings to discuss budget priorities as the City begins its 2017 budgeting for outcomes process. Other City officials attending will include deputy mayors, New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) Superintendent Michael Harrison, New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) Superintendent Tim McConnell and other department and agency leaders.

The goal of the budgeting for outcomes process is to produce a more resident-driven budget and ensure process improvement and accountability of our government performance. This national best practice is designed to enhance services and get a better return on investment of public dollars by encouraging City agencies to invest public resources based on the results residents and City leaders want to achieve. While traditional budgeting systems are hinged on incremental changes to the previous year's level of effort, budgeting for outcomes ensures that all City budgets are funded based on how well they achieve residents' priorities.

Before each district meeting, City officials will also host a resource center from 5:30 - 6:00 p.m. where residents may visit one-on-one with representatives from several City departments and agencies to address specific complaints and concerns.  All community meetings will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. Spanish will be available at all meeting locations. Vietnamese translation will be available at the District E meeting. Residents who cannot attend community meetings are invited to share their comments and input by sending e-mail to  mayor@nola.gov .

The High Priestess of Dark Alley will play Le Petit Théâtre du Vieux Carré from July 7 - 24, 2016. The contemporary 7th Ward-set drama is written and directed by Jackie Alexander, author of last season's Brothers From The Bottom. Dark Alley is the story of three Creole women, Celeste Thibodaux and her two daughters, Claire and Janee Charbonnet. Trapped by the conventions of intra-racial divisions within the African American community, the sisters are pitted against their mother regarding issues of color, class, sexuality and generational differences.

Pontchartrain Hotel

Philip Melancon returns to the Bayou Bar at the Pontchartrain Hotel this Thursday. He will be at the legendary piano every Thursday, Friday and Saturday beginning at 8 for . . . well, his last stint lasted twenty years.
The refurbished Pontchartrain is beautiful. The Caribbean Room and all food services are overseen by John Besh.  He has included several favorites of the 'Train including Mile High Pie. A bar menu is also available. The Silver Whistle is operating for morning and lunch guests. Blueberry muffins are back in the basket. The Bayou Bar has been up-graded. New floor, bar, seating, but still very much the feel of the old place. I am Philip and, of course, I'll be at the bar wrapped, drink sodden Steinway.
It is a fabulous night to visit this part of New Orleans history, part of which so many of us have taken part in. Come back and make some more.

Music came to Bruce at an early age, and in the most traditional manner--handed down from father to son. When he was growing up, no family gathering was complete without a little playing and singing. August 11 - Julio and Cesar
Originally from Guatemala, Julio and Cesar Herrera have been in New Orleans for over 30 years.  They describe their music as constantly evolving, attributing this, in part, to their exposure from an early age to many cultures.  For more information about the band, visit julioandcesar.com.

August 18 - Pfister Sisters
Holley Bendtsen, Yvette Voelker, Debbie Davis and Amasa Miller comprise one of the few groups that represent the New Orleans swing era, with their recreation of the Boswell Sisters arrangements, and the only act featuring vocal jazz harmony. Mojo's Four Part Event Series "A Method to Our Madness" will Bring Out the Barista in us all
Coffee drinkers are invited to learn how to make the most of their brew beginning on Sunday,

Coffee enthusiasts and those who are eager to learn are invited to the interactive demonstrations led by some of the most talented baristas and roasters in the city on Sunday : Sunday, July 24; Sunday, Aug. 7 and Sunday, Aug. 21. The events are free and open to the public and will be held at Mojo Coffee House at 4700 Freret Street beginning at 7 p.m.

At the first event in the series "A Barista's Guide to Home Brewing," Mojo's lead baristas will offer instructions on how to achieve ideal coffee extraction at home using simple and inexpensive tools. Demonstrations will focus on two hand-brewing methods: the Hario V60 and Chemex Coffeemaker. Attendees will leave with all of the know-how they need to brew the perfect pour-over. The event will be held on Sunday, July 10.

On July 24, Mojo Roastmaster Matt Cronin will lead "A Roaster's Guide to Cupping," walking guests through the process of how to professionally evaluate coffee. Similar to a wine tasting, cupping engages the senses of taste and smell, and can allow the casual coffee drinker a more comparative approach to tasting than they get with their morning trip to the shop. Coffee aficionados and newbies will get the chance to learn what a roaster does and why they select the specific coffees that they choose to purchase. This demo will help coffee lovers to make more informed choices about the coffees they choose for themselves at coffee shops or to drink at home.

"We select our offerings by tasting hundreds of different coffees per year," said Mojo Coffee Roasters Owner Demian Estevez. "Cupping is one of the most fun parts of being a coffee professional, but it's not something that our customers get to participate in. We think this will help people get a better idea of which coffees they like and why they like them."

The final two events in the series include: "A Barista's Guide to Cold Brewing" on Aug. 7 led by barista Ronnie Pelton that will teach the basics for making the essential New Orleans' summer coffee drink; and on Aug. 21 several top Mojo baristas will lead "One Coffee, Four Different Ways," demonstrating how one coffee can taste entirely different depending on the brewing device used. The devices demonstrated will include the Hario V60, Chemex, Aeropress and French Press. In the final event, guests will gain a greater understanding of why baristas use the tools they use, and which of these brewing options they prefer themselves.

All four events will be held at Mojo Coffee House at 4700 Freret Street at 7 p.m.. Mojo Coffee Roasters hopes to continue to inform the New Orleans coffee drinker on quality standards and the latest trends in coffee through this event series.

Mojo Coffee Roasters single origin coffees are roasted right here in New Orleans. They are now available for purchase in both Mojo Coffee House shops at 1500 Magazine St. and 4700 Freret St., at Ignatius Espresso Bar & Cafe, at Satsuma Cafe, and online at mojocoffeeroasters.com.

New Orleans' National Underwear Day parade is August 5
  • Burlesque dancer Trixie Minx is queen of New Orleans' National Underwear Day Parade.
National Underwear Day Parade NOLA

New Orleans, LA - July 5th, 2016 - August 5th is National Underwear Day and we're celebrating by throwing a parade... in our underwear!

The National Underwear Day Parade NOLA is hosted by conceptual artist Ryan S Ballard, Space Commander of the Krewe of Chewbacchus, and the brilliant and talented Xena Zeit-Geist of the Society of Sin , a true professional at doing amazing things in her underwear.

We are excited to crown Chris Leonard, the Executive Director of New Orleans Pride, and burlesque producer and performer Trixie Minx as the King & Queen of the inaugural Underwear Day Parade NOLA!

It doesn't matter if you are a man, woman, reptilian shape-shifter or moldy Sumerian god.  YOU are invited to show up in your freshest skivvies and march in a joyous celebration of underwear!

We are here to promote body positivity, liberation from the tyranny of outer garments, and... set the new Guinness World Record for the "Largest Gathering of People Wearing Only Underpants/Knickers"!

Be a part of something bigger than yourself!

The National Underwear Day Parade NOLA is 100% absolutely FREE to march in. We will start in Washington Square Park and set the World Record and then roll through the Marigny/Bywater ending at the "Free Ball" at Castillo Blanco Art Studios! Entry to the Ball is also FREE! Its a free ball. Free. Ball. Free Ball.

Gather in Washington Square at 6pm and be counted for the Guinness World Record.

Roll at 7pm.

The "Free Ball" at Castillo Blanco follows and features performances by the Society of Sin and Dohm Collective.

In the new New Orleans, it seems people can't get enough parades or burlesque, and the two public displays are merging in a National Underwear Day parade, announced by organizers Ryan Ballard of the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus and Xena Zeit-Geist, founder of the Society of Sin burlesque troupe.

The parade is Friday, Aug. 5. There's a pre-party and gathering in Washington Square in Marigny at 6 p.m. The procession departs at 7 p.m. and travels to Castillo Blanco, the Chewbacchus den, where the group will hold its "Free Ball." Organizers have named royalty for the day. Chris Leonard, Executive Director of New Orleans Pride, is the King. Burlesque performer Trixie Minx is Queen. Admission to both events is free.

National Underwear Day is credited to underwear maker FreshPair. There is a websitethat collects unofficial national days. It lists July 5 as National Bikini Day, Apple Turnover Day and Graham Cracker Day. It lists Aug. 5 as National Oyster Day and Underwear Day.

Organizers are trying to set a Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people wearing only underwear, according to a press release.

The 16th Annual Satchmo SummerFest
presented by Chevron
Satchmo SummerFest moves to Jackson Square in New Orleans' historic French Quarter; NEW 'Back o' Town Stage' with swing dance lessons inside Louisiana State Museum's Arsenal; Satchmo Symposium and other special events move to Le Petit Théâtre du Vieux Carré;
'Pops' Playhouse for Kids' at Louisiana State Museum's Arsenal (next to the Cabildo), and more!

New Orleans, Louisiana - French Quarter Festivals, Inc. (FQFI) proudly announces a major move for Satchmo SummerFest presented by Chevron: the 16th annual event will take place in Jackson Square on August 5-7, 2016. The move will help FQFI achieve its goal to grow Satchmo SummerFest, which began in 2001 as a way to commemorate Louis 'Satchmo' Armstrong's 100th birthday. Since its inception, the event - previously held at the Louisiana State Museum's Old U.S. Mint - has turned into New Orleans' premier traditional jazz festival, annually attracting an average of 40,000 attendees. "As we celebrate the Festival's 16th anniversary - and Louis Armstrong's 116th birthday - we are thrilled to move into New Orleans' most beautiful, iconic park. Like Louis Armstrong, Jackson Square is beloved and integral to New Orleans' history and culture. The new location, along with our incredible symposium panelists, traditional jazz musicians, great restaurants, and special events will make this year's event incredibly memorable, historic, and high profile." said Marci Schramm, Executive Director of French Quarter Festivals, Inc. Satchmo SummerFest is held annually on the weekend closest to August 4th - Louis Armstrong's birthday.
Three Full Days of Music and a New Indoor Stage
Attendees can look forward to festival fare from some of New Orleans' best restaurants, unique cultural events like a traditional jazz mass and second lines, a Trumpet Tribute and Birthday Party for Louis Armstrong, and children's activities. Satchmo SummerFest presented by Chevron also will bring three full days of music, featuring dozens of New Orleans' finest traditional and contemporary jazz musicians and brass bands.
Introducing the New 'Back o' Town' Stage
This year Satchmo SummerFest grows with the addition of the new 'Back o' Town' stage located inside the air-conditioned Louisiana State Museum's Arsenal (600 St. Peter Street, 2nd floor). The 'Back o' Town' will feature a dance floor, NOLA Jitterbugs, and live dance music on Saturday and Sunday. Inside Jackson Square, two additional stages (the 'Red Beans and Ricely Yours Stage' and 'Cornet Chop Suey Stage') will provide three days of musical performances. The lineup includes Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Big Sam's Funky Nation, Bill Summers & Jazalsa, Kermit Ruffins, Brass-A-Holics, Catherine Russell (debut), Yoshio Toyama and the Dixie Saints, Jeremy Davenport, Trumpet Tribute to Louis Armstrong featuring James Andrews, Victor Goines (debut), Wendell Brunious, and many more. Visit fqfi.org/satchmo to view the full music schedule.
Satchmo Symposium to Include Pulitzer Panel Celebrating the 100-Year Anniversary of the Pulitzer
The Satchmo Symposium, three days of fascinating seminars with internationally-respected Satchmo scholars and musicians, will be held inside Le Petit Théâtre du Vieux Carré. This year's Symposium includes a special panel developed in partnership with the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities and Pulitzer: Celebrating 100 years of Pulitzer - From New Orleans to the World Stage: The Artistic Journeys of Louis Armstrong and Wynton Marsalis. The panel will explore and contrast the approaches, outlooks, and outputs of both artists - as well as how they were influenced by New Orleans; it will be moderated by New Orleans journalist (NOLA.com|The Times-Picayune) and historian James Karst.

On Friday, August 5, Grammy Award-winning artist Catherine Russell will present From Satchmo's Knee to a Grammy. Russell grew up in New York City as the daughter of musical royalty: her father was pianist, bandleader, and longtime Louis Armstrong musical director Luis Russell; her mother, Carline Ray, was a celebrated artist who performed with the International Sweethearts of Rhythm, Mary Lou Williams, and Ruth Brown, among others. Catherine, who met Louis Armstrong when she was very young, has toured the world as a backup singer with such top artists as David Bowie, Jackson Browne, and Cyndi Lauper - and over the last 10 years has released five critically-acclaimed CDs (and earned a Grammy) as a solo artist and bandleader. Catherine makes her Satchmo SummerFest debut on stage at Festival and will talk about her fascinating musical heritage and wide-ranging career with interviewer Fred Kasten.

Author Mick Carlon presents A Conversation with Jack Bradley. Bradley was one of Pops' most trusted friends as well as the 'photo-taker' of some of the most beautifully candid Armstrong photographs ever captured. Bradley traveled with Armstrong for years, taking photos and collecting an incredible collection of artifacts which were recently donated to the Louis Armstrong House Museum and Archives in New York. Jack, now 82 and retired on Cape Cod, sat down for a wide-ranging interview with Carlon about his deep friendship with the man the world knew and loved as 'Satchmo.' The recently-recorded interview will be shown on Sunday, August 7. A full Satchmo SummerFest Symposium schedule can be found at fqfi.org/satchmo.
'Spirit of Satch Awards' and Other Special Events
The 16th anniversary of Satchmo SummerFest presented by Chevron also brings the return of the 'Spirit of Satch' Awards. Winners are champions of jazz and New Orleans music in a variety of areas, including 'Jazz Education', 'Keeping Traditional Jazz Alive and Well', and 'Preserving our Musical Legacy'. The winners will be announced at festival on Friday, August 5 during the opening ceremony on the 'Red Beans and Ricely Yours' stage.

In addition to music and education, Satchmo SummerFest presented by Chevron showcases New Orleans' most important indigenous traditions, such as a Sunday morning Jazz Mass at the historic St. Augustine Church in Treme; a traditional second line parade; and traditional jazz dance lessons. Other special events include an opening reception at the beautiful and historic Omni Royal Orleans Hotel (the official hotel of Satchmo SummerFest), a special Louis Armstrong film screening at Le Petit Théâtre du Vieux Carré, 'Pops' Playhouse' - a dedicated children's area, and a Trumpet Tribute and birthday celebration to close the festival. The festival also features authentic Creole cuisine from the area's finest restaurants to create 'Red Bean Alley.' Daily admission is $5 (children 12 and under are free).  For more information on FQFI festivals and events visit fqfi.org or call 504-522-5730.

New Orleans, Louisiana - French Quarter Festivals, Inc. (FQFI) proudly announces the 2016 Satchmo SummerFest poster artist, Terry Marks, Sr. A New Orleans native, Marks is president of the Metairie Art Guild, as well as an active member of the New Orleans Art Association and Jefferson Art Guild. After obtaining a degree in Advertising Art, he opened a sign business in 1976 and his work can be seen all over the region. The original poster art, a vibrant portrait of Louis Armstrong with a retro, sub-tropical vibe, was carved from wood salvaged from the old Dixie Brewery. "The wood was over 200 years old. I felt that only a New Orleans legend such as Louis Armstrong would be a fitting subject for this piece," Marks said.

Festival-goers will have the opportunity to meet the artist during the 16th annual Satchmo SummerFest, which takes place August 5-7 at Jackson Square. Satchmo SummerFest is the premier American jazz festival dedicated to the life, legacy, and music of New Orleans' native son, Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong. The annual Bad Girls of Burlesque, which is now a monthly show at House of Blues, is a highly anticipated showcase featuring an array of kick-ass women from all over the world.

Besides showcases, the festival includes an opening and closing party. Celebrated guests of the festival include Rita Alexander the Champagne Girl and Leslie Zemeckis. Tasting Notes
With tempting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and spice, Zin-phomaniac is a complex, full-bodied wine with juicy, approachable flavors of ripe blue-purple fruit and dark semi-sweet chocolate. A kiss of vanilla and a touch of brown baking spice add depth to the long, satisfying mouthfeel.

Love New Orleans & She'll Love You Back.

Sincerely,

Frank Stansbury
