"Of Missions and Ministry"

"The church lives by missions, like a fire lives by burning." I believe that. As the NDBC Vision Statement says : hands-on service is crucial to our own discipleship and to the mission of Christ in the world.
Of course, we need to be careful with the word missions. Too often in church history, the notion of missions has been paternalistic: we have something they need, so we give it to them...be it the Gospel of Jesus or a rack of clothes from Goodwill. Though nobly intended, missions can be a first cousin to charity from a position of privilege, rather than the life and love of an affirming partnership. Like with Taliaferro County...I pray that we are working on a reciprocity of relationship. Each has a gift to give. Each has a need to receive...whether from Taliaferro County or Buckhead in Atlanta.
Taliaferro went well this year. With God's help, we bit off exactly what we could chew. The resources we had (money, time, volunteers) matched the needs we tried to address (God's love, playful joy, and life-giving hope).
However, I had to actually WORK in the Bible School this year. It nearly killed me. Most years I show-up, tell biblical stories, then retreat to work on next Sunday's sermon. But this year, every minute was on the clock and I had to do what real teachers do: Work hard! But given our Special Forces Vacation Bible School Team...all was done with grace and energy. And God was in the doing of it.
     But there's more!
On Sunday, July 24, we will have some guests from Cuba. Church of the Covenant in Birmingham, AL, is a sister Alliance of Baptists church. They asked if NDBC might allow a visiting Cuban Baptist pastor to bring a greeting to us in worship that morning. Rev. Corita Blanco is the pastor of Shalom Baptist Church in Boca de Mariel, Cuba. She also is in charge of Christian Education for the Fraternity of Baptist Churches in Cuba...with which the Alliance is connected.
I said, "Yes. She can greet and I will preach." And they said, "Great." Our NDBC Missions Ministry Team will host a sandwich luncheon for her after worship. I'm inviting some of our Oakhurst Baptist friends, too. If you would like to overhear the luncheon conversation, just let Barbara Atchley know to save you a sandwich.
Whatever else spirituality is, it is relationship. Glad am I, that Northside Drive lives out this truth. It is crucial to our on discipleship and the mission of Christ in the world.
Upcoming Northside Kids' Events...

Family Pool Play
July 9 - at the Clark's at4 PM
On July 9 at 4 PM we will have a Pool Play Day at the home of Jordan and Patti Clark. This is a time to have fun, relax, and play! With all the traveling and busying that goes on during the summer months, we want to offer a time to just relax and spend time with fellow families who are also exhausted from all the busyness of summer!

Family Lunch & Water Play
August 13 - at the Gilbert's from 11 AM-2 PM
What better way to escape the summer heat than with a Water Play Day! The Gilbert's have opened their home to us again to have a fun day playing in sprinklers, having water balloon fights, sliding down the slip n' slide, and so much more! We hope you and your family will join us on August 13 from 11 AM to 2 PM. Lunch will be provided and fun is promised.
