July 2016

YVSC's ONLY fundraising event is less than two weeks away!

The Tour de France is in full swing, but did you know we have our own cycling "Tour" right here in Routt County? All proceeds from the Tour de Steamboat on July 23 benefit four local non-profits: YVSC, REPS, Routt County Riders, and Partners Mentoring Youth in Routt County.

See below ways you can support YVSC through the Tour, even if you're not a cyclist!

Happy riding,

Sarah B. Jones
Executive Director
Tour de Steamboat benefits YVSC: Check out the ways you can participate

This hand-crafted, titanium road frame  comes completely built with Shimano Ultegra level wheels, 11 speed mechanical drive-train, an Eriksen seat post, Enve 2.0 fork and Shimano/Pro Vite 7S cockpit ($7,500 value).

Bonus this year! The 2016 Steamboat Brew Bike will go to another lucky ticket holder. This Momentum fat tire cruiser by Giant (MSRP $590) is just the thing for brewery hoppin' in the Boat. One ticket, two chances to win and only 400 tickets sold!

The year-round adventure package is valued at $3,500 and includes summer and winter activities and lodging, such as Steamboat Bike Park lift tickets, fly fishing, ski lift tickets, Powder Cats skiing, and more! Even if you don't win the Adventure Package, you'll still receive a bottle of fine wine. You just can't lose with this ticket! Only 100 tickets sold, so again your odds are great.

Register to ride the Tour by July 13 and you'll be entered to win a  Big Agnes Tent !
With route distances starting at 26 miles, you don't have to be a century rider to do the Tour de Steamboat ! No matter what distance you set your sights on--26, 46, 66 or 116 miles--riders of all ages and abilities (even kids) can participate. Everyone is encouraged to ride at their own pace and take advantage of the superb support. Because the event is limited to 1,000 riders, it has a small-town feel with no waiting in line at aid stations. After the ride, enjoy an expo, barbecue lunch, and beer garden with local microbrews at Little Toots Park. Register for the ride at www.tourdesteamboat.com.

Volunteer to make community events waste-free

YVSC's Zero Hero volunteers are key to making more than 40 large community events waste-free, such as Free Summer Concerts and the Farmers' Market. Volunteers set up, staff and break down the Zero Waste stations, with each volunteer typically donating about three hours of time. Even though you're working, volunteers still enjoy the events, socializing and perks like pool passes!

We welcome volunteers of all ages and community group members or business employees that want to volunteer together!

July Talking Green: Green Drinks

July 26
5:30-6:30 p.m.
Mountain Tap Brewery
910 Yampa St.

Around the world every month people who are committed to sustainability meet up at informal sessions known as "Green Drinks." Started in London, it has spread to over 527 cities worldwide! Help us celebrate summer and YVSC's 6th anniversary in the international Green Drinks movement with a gathering of sustainability champions at the new Mountain Tap Brewery. Steamboat's latest addition to our town's craft brewery culture features upcycled and repurposed materials and decor and is located in the former YVEA building. The Mountain Tap patio is a great place to enjoy their hand-crafted beers and wood-fired pizza.
Cen$ible Energy funding for 2016 closes July 31

The Cen$ible Energy rebate program for Yampa Valley Electric Association(YVEA) members has been a huge success this year with total funding of $36,500 from numerous local partners, more than 300 rebates issued, and more than $65,000 spent locally with energy efficiency vendors in the Yampa Valley.

Due to the program's success, rebate funds are nearly depleted. The Cen$ible Energy program will accept 2016 rebate applications for Energy Star appliances, LED light bulbs and tubes, programmable thermostats and post-audit air sealing through July 31. Program organizers are no longer accepting applications for FREE energy audits this year. Energy audits during the remainder of 2016 will be half price with Atmos Energy funding, or approximately $150. Free residential energy audits will be available again after January 1, 2017. The full rebate program will also re-open again on January 1, 2017.

Cen$ible Energy helps families and small businesses in Routt and Moffat counties save energy and money. Founding funding partners include Yampa Valley Electric Association, Yampa Valley Sustainability Council, the City of Steamboat and Alpine Bank. The program also received donations from Routt County and the Town of Oak Creek. More sponsors and funding partners are needed to support this popular annual rebate program.

Clean Out the Classroom keeps school supplies in use and out of the landfill

During the last week of school, YVSC spearheads an  annual Clean Out the Classroom Campaign to collect gently used and unused school and art supplies and distribute these materials in the community.

This year, we collected supplies from three Steamboat public schools, Hayden Elementary School and Emerald Mountain School. Through this YVSC program, 37 boxes of supplies were donated to Colorado Stu dent Care, Steamboat Arts Council Create Space, Steamboat summer school students, Boys & Girls Club of Craig and Steamboat Springs, the Soda Creek Elementary art program and K-1st grade teams, Crayola ColorCycle , Lift-Up  and Bargain Barn.

A huge thank you to
the visiting Episcopal Service Corps middle school volunteers for helping sort the vast quanti ty of paper, notebooks, 3-ring binders, highlight ers, markers, colored pencils, crayons, glue sticks, pencils, scissors, art supplies, books, folders and more.

In early August, the Steamboat Springs Arts Council will be offering the supplies collected for back-to-school, so that families in Routt County can access these reusable school supplies at no cost. Stay tuned for details on this event.

Save gas and money: Visit the  Yampa Valley Ride Share Facebook Page

You can now find carpool and commuting partners in the Yampa Valley through the new Yampa Valley Ride Share Facebook page set up by YVSC. The Yampa Valley Ride Share  page is for commuting and carpool opportunities close to home (not to Denver or DIA). Since so many locals are already using other Facebook pages to find rides to the Front Range, this new page will provide an option for local carpool connections. (This replaces the former Carpoolworld Northwest Colorado website.)
