Healthy Dining Matters adds new restaurants in Pasadenaflood

Healthy Dining Matters (HDM), an initiative of Harris County Public Health, is helping customers make the healthy choice an easy one in local non-chain restaurants.

HDM, currently being implemented in East Aldine and north Pasadena, has recently added two new restaurants in north Pasadena:
Silver Sycamore and Sycamore Grounds. Each of these restaurants worked with the HDM Registered Dietitian to modify select menu items and create new menu items to include as part of their HDM options.

Richey's Country Cookin', a local Pasadena favorite, joined the Healthy Dining Matters Program in 2014 and became the first participating restaurant in north Pasadena. As participating restaurants, they are all promoting healthier menu options and providing a healthier restaurant environment for their customers.

The next time you are in north Pasadena, be sure to check out the new Healthy Dining Matters menus at the following restaurants:
- Silver Sycamore, 5111 Pine St, Pasadena, TX 77503
- Sycamore Grounds, 2502 Pansy St, Pasadena, TX 77503
- Richey's Country Cookin', 1219 Richey St., Pasadena, TX 77506

New restaurants were brought on board through the support of the BUILD Health Challenge grant, which will extend to one more restaurant. If you or someone you know owns a restaurant in north Pasadena and would like to participate in this program, please contact Katie Chennisi at [email protected]
Street Olympics celebrates 30th anniversary WATCH

Edited version of a story written and shared by Harris County Precinct One.

The Harris County Street Olympics Summer Games kicked off on June 10th. This year's summer events will celebrate the Street Olympics' 30th anniversary and will honor its founder El Franco Lee, the late Precinct One Commissioner.

At the kickoff, children from Precinct One's YET and Lincoln Park Community Center demonstrated four of the sports - kickball, basketball dribble, Hula Hoop and jump rope.

The Street Olympics began as a summer event of sports activities, but now offers year-round programs in the areas of swimming, health care, tutoring, reading readiness and environment education. The Summer Games, a Street Olympics component, was started to give youth positive activities during the vulnerable summer months, and will include a 3 on 3 basketball tournament and a swim meet.

The final event of the Summer Games will be the Bright Futures Fair on Friday, August 5th,  which includes representatives manning about 100 booths, including Healthy Living Matters, to expose youth to topics and exhibits on health, education and careers.
Community leaders promote healthier habits with creative strategies ITTSummit

Edited version of a story written and shared by Houston LISC.

In a community struggling with chronic illness and limited access to fruits and vegetables, Roland Cotton is digging in the dirt to make a change. He and community leaders in OST/South Union and Near Northside are working with GO Neighborhoods to create fun and educational activities that encourage better eating habits, more exercise and generally healthier lifestyles for residents of all ages.

In OST/South Union, this means a new local community garden, a monthly farmer's market and even encouraging residents to plant their own backyard gardens.

In addition, the Strollin' and Rollin' GO Team, aimed at making the Southeast Houston area more pedestrian and bicycle friendly, recently held a pop-up neighborhood greenway event, temporarily transforming a section of Milart Street into a car-free road zone. Neighborhood partners showcased techniques that slow down traffic and make streets more pedestrian and bike friendly.

A Call to Action for providers of early childhood professional developmentCall2Action

HLM, in partnership with the Texas Early Childhood Professional Development System (TECPDS), developed a call to action to encourage early care and education (ECE) professional development providers to create opportunities for quality training in obesity prevention topics. The following specific actions are being asked to help make this happen:
  • Qualified trainers listed on the Texas Trainer Registry should submit training proposals in obesity prevention topics to be listed on the Registry and promote them once approved
  • Conference organizers should request training proposals specific to obesity prevention topics and create policies around making them available at all conferences
In working together to make sure that these opportunities for quality training exist, we are providing children with a greater likelihood to be at a healthy weight and prevent chronic diseases, as well as improve academic success and classroom behaviors.

ENACT, developed by the Prevention Institute, is a hands-on assessment and planning tool for organizations, coalitions, and communities interested in improving their food and physical activity environments. ENACT contains a menu of concrete strategies that promote healthy eating and active living within each of its seven environments.  These strategies can be used to assess community environments and to identify priority strategies.  The tool can also be used to evaluate past and current efforts and offer new priorities for the future.

ENACT also includes a policy database that catalogues promising food and activity related policies.
