People and Business

The United Nations has adopted a set of goals for promoting Social Sustainability.  The following infographic illustrates the 17 global goals.

Social Sustainability is about people. It is about creating a better future for people and communities to prosper.

It involves creating a plan of action for people, planet and prosperity.  Equal weighting is given to economic, social and environmental outcomes, recognising the interdependency of what shapes our future. It requires bold thinking and acting in partnership to drive innovation.

In a rapidly changing world facing significant challenges such as rapid urbanisation, climate change, resource constraints, unemployment and an aging population, social sustainability helps us to give back more than we take.

This e-newsletter is about how your business can take some simple steps in connecting with your local community and helping to make a difference within your own business and to our people in Southern Adelaide.
Workforce Participation on the Darlington Upgrade Project

As covered in last month's newsletter, the  Darlington Upgrade Project has begun. The South Australian Government is committed to ensuring its procurement decisions support state and national efforts to increase workforce participation, skill development and social inclusion through employment of Aboriginal people, trainees and apprentices, local people with barriers to employment and up-skilling.

The State Government policy requires government agencies and contractors to work together to ensure that 20% of labour hours on specified contracts is undertaken by apprentices, trainees, Aboriginal people, local people with barriers to employment and for up-skilling.

For more information, contact  Nicole Turvey , Department of State Development, on 0477 367 810.  If you are interested in connecting with our Aboriginal community, please contact Doug Clinch on 8463 5516.
Spend time on your business

The amount of events, workshops, networking activities and programs can be overwhelming and time consuming at times.
We have made it simpler to find out what is going on in Southern Adelaide and how to connect with the right people.

Make contact with   Bob Sloan - our Tonsley Small Business Advisor - in the first instance who can connect you with a relevant person within our Business Support Network.  Bob is available to support new businesses or provide a "Business Health Check".

Take a look at our consolidated Calendar of events to see what is on offer.  If there is something else that you would like to see added, please make contact with Georgie Johnson Economic Development Administrator.

Take care of yourself

In May 2016, our regional business association, ERBA , SafeWork SA and Beyond Blue, held a forum on mental health in the workplace.

A number of the guest speakers mentioned the sense of isolation that is often felt by small business owners, particularly by sole operators or those working from home, and that this can sometimes be a contributor to poor mental health.

In Southern Adelaide there are places to network and do business.  ERBA and Hallett Cove Business Association ( HCBA)  provide business networking events;  Spend time at the newly established Cove Enterprise Hub at Hallett Cove; or visit one of the co-working spaces at Tonsley - Co-Hab or NVI .

Do your people need help with reading, writing or digital literacy skills?
The TAFE SA Foundation Skills team offers training and support in a number of areas such as Productivity and employment performance; Employee communication and team interaction; Documentation and report writing outcomes; Customer service provision; Employees' computer literacy; and Quality and sustainability objectives.

TAFE SA also develop and deliver customised training programs specifically to address your staff skills gaps.  These customised programs often lead to improved productivity, reduced errors and waste, fewer accidents and improved workplace culture. For further information contact the new TAFE SA Regional Manager for Southern Adelaide -   Tom Quigley on 0467 783 745.

The   Touched by Olivia Foundation is currently developing its first inclusive playspace in South Australia in partnership with City of Marion. This playspace is designed in close consultation with the community to ensure that no children are left out.

Touched by Olivia has a dream that every community will have an inclusive playspace. Already there are 19 Livvi's Places and many more are in development. The only way we can make this dream a reality is with support.  Sponsorship starts at $350. For more information on the amazing design and how to get involved please refer to the City of Marion website   or contact   Renee Pitcher on 7420 6450 .
